Huskers Shoot for Fourth Straight Win in Battle with Boilermakers

 

The No. 17 Nebraska women’s basketball team takes aim at its fourth straight Big Ten win when the Huskers play host to Purdue on Monday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

 

Tip-off between the Big Red and the Boilermakers on Martin Luther King Jr. Day is set for 6 p.m.

Nebraska is coming off an impressive 73-45 win over Penn State on Thursday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

 

The Huskers, who had all 12 players in uniform and available to play for the first time all season, got career highs of 18 points and six three-pointers from freshman Natalie Romeo. The 5-7 guard played a career-high 26 minutes while making her first career start. She added three rebounds and three assists in a tremendous all-around effort.

 

Romeo’s outburst from long range allowed the Huskers to hit a season-high 11 three-pointers against the Lady Lions. Romeo led four Huskers in double figures, including 12 points from Tear’a Laudermill, 11 from Allie Havers and 10 from Brandi Jeffery.

 

Purdue comes to Lincoln with a 9-8 overall and a 2-4 Big Ten mark trying to avoid its fourth consecutive loss. The Boilermakers are coming off a 65-56 home loss to Wisconsin, which followed a 24-point loss at Maryland on Jan. 8 and a 14-point setback at Iowa on Jan. 11.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW

 

•Bouncing back: Where do the Boilermakers go after the disappointing loss to Wisconsin? It wasn’t that Purdue lost, but how it lost to a team which didn’t hold any significant advantages. Coach Sharon Versyp’s team has spent the hours since the setback trying to get back on track, holding meetings and coming up with solutions. The Boilermakers have lost three in a row and are in danger of slipping deeper into the Big Ten standings based on the upcoming schedule. This may be Versyp’s biggest challenge in her nine-year career to turn this season around.

 

•New territory: Long losing streaks during the conference regular season are rare for the Boilermakers. The current three-game slide is the longest against Big Ten teams since 2011-12 and four straight losses hasn’t happened since 2009-10. The last time Purdue lost five consecutive league games? Try 1992-93. The Boilermakers will be hard pressed to end their current streak based on road trips to Nebraska and Minnesota. The Gophers already won at Mackey Arena on Jan. 1.

 

•Increased depth: Each Big Ten team has adjusted at some point because of injuries and sickness. The Huskers were part of that group. In fact, they basically used six players in the conference-opening loss to Minnesota. Nebraska blew a 17-point lead, in part because of a lack of depth, and started the league season at 0-2 after a loss to Maryland. However, reinforcements have arrived. Freshman Natalie Romeo missed eight games with a stress fracture and stomach virus but is rounding into form. She’s coming off an 18-point performance against Penn State and is someone the Boilermakers have to pay attention to in this matchup.

should be fun game to be at! imo, not the best Purdue team to show up at PBA, nonetheless, will be a battle. would like to see husker "d" hold Purdue to 60 or less. would put huskers in great position. think it will be a year or two before you see the "old" Purdue---according to espnW they have the #28, #30, and #44 recruits coming in for next year.

 

Purdue will be hungry after suffering a 4 game losing streak---so, hope the leadership keeps harping on that.

just going by the articles and coach yori's postgame comments, there was no mention of any flare-ups.

 

noticed huskers are allowing 57.4 pts/game. now that coach yori has a bench to play with, wouldn't surprise me if it goes up a tad. might take a bit for the newcomers to adjust now that they are available. on the flip side, maybe offensive production will take a bit of a bounce!

 

i'll take a shot and say, Purdue 61   Huskers 72  

think it will be close, but, huskers will add some free throws at the end to stretch it out a bit.

Nice win for the Lady Huskers. Four players in double figures in scoring. Emily had 13 rebounds and 5 assists but only had 5 points. We will need her to be more productive in scoring for us to continue to be successful. The bench provided 10 points.

The bench seemed to help give the starters a few breathers...and contributed some points...Romeo, Havers, and Smith actually looked pretty good. Smith and Romeo still a little hesitant at times, but they're coming along.

 

Cady couldn't seem to score much...was away from the basket alot. But we missed a lot of shots...it seemed that way anyway.

 

Good win against a decent team.

Even though Cady scored 5 points Yori seems to be happy with the production she is getting out of Cady. I would agree that she does need to score more In the 8 to 9 point range.

This game reminded me of the days gone by going up against A&M and Okie St. It seemed when we needed that big shot down the stretch someone stepped up and made it.  I thought Brandi Jeffery played one of her best games of the year. Good minutes from the bench tonight especially Chandler Smith and Natalie R. Really like what Natalie is starting to do on the defensive end of the court. Emily winds up with 13 big rebounds. Lot better from the charity stripe tonight.

 

Good game to get under our belts. We go to Madison now, got to get that one.

Huge, huge 3 by Chandler after Purdue cut it to 3.  She played much better than she did against Penn State--which is understandable not having played in so long.  She came up big in her minutes tonight.

 

Agree with Row 6 about Brandi.  May have been her best all around game as a Husker.  Loved her assist to Rachel for the conventional 3 point play!

 

I didn't like the whistle we got in the second half.  Curious for those watching on TV if it looked the same. 

 

Great D, rebounding, and passing by Cady--to go along with a big 3.

 

T had a great first half and then couldn't get it going in the second half. 

 

Hope we can start getting a few minutes out of Kalenta.

 

Tough game coming up at Wiscy.

possibly. i am a bit surprised kalenta didn't get some minutes. she's listed at 6' 3"---so, i thought she could help out on purdue's bigs. evidently, coach yori doesn't feel comfortable enough with her game to put her in that situation-----yet. she seems to be very active when she is on the floor---hustling, setting screens, etc.

I would like to see both Kalenta and Cincore getting some minutes soon.  Maybe it's a matter of conditioning.  Seemed like Cincore was doing a good job before she landed in the boot.  She always gets on the stat board within 30 seconds of coming into a game, whether it's due to a steal, bucket, or rebound.  Even just getting her in for a few minutes in the first half would help.  I think she's good enough to be a starter next year.
