I'm not sure that people who weren't familiar with the story and watched this would have really understood that, at the time this happened, Brooke was believed to be a legit NFL draft prospect.  They talked about the draft, sure, but it wasn't pie in the sky kind of stuff for him.  It wasn't a case of "maybe they'd look at him as a TE" or something.

His junior season, he came within 2 inches of breaking David Humm's all-time Nebraska single-game passing record of 297 yards.  And, by "within 2 inches," I mean that's how much overthrown a ball was that would have probably resulted in a 60 yard TD.  As it was, Brooke finished that day with 267 yards passing, the 5th highest passing game in Husker history at the time.  But the missed ball was a good 30 yards in the air and if the receiver (a TE as I recall) had just caught it and fallen down, it would have put Brooke over 300 yards passing and he would have been the first Husker QB ever to do so.

He had good touch, decent arm strength, great size, great mobility and could take a hit.  And this wasn't one of those Husker QBs being looked at as a safety like Scott Frost.  He was being looked at as a legit NFL QB prospect.

Otherwise, it was a fitting tribute to a classy young man.  Brought back a lot of memories.

It was indeed a well done piece.  I agree with Norm.

Brooke was a QB that could run, Tommie was a gifted athlete that could pass.  Tommie was a college difference maker, Brooke was a NFL type QB talent.  Brooke was also CLASS when it came to community service.

I do not want to get into comparisons, but look at someone like Tom Brady.  Would anyone believe he would be arguably one of the top QB's in NFL history coming out of Michigan?  Again, I am not comparing Brooke to Brady, I am just saying that Brady is a much better QB in the NFL system then he was as a college QB.  I personally believe that Brooke would have accomplished more in the NFL then he ever did in college.

Going back to Tommie vs. Brooke.  That certainly sparked a lot of debate at the time.  Couple the talent debate with the race debate, and it oftentime became heated.  I remember debating a guy at work about the battle and I accused him of liking Brooke over Tommie strictly because Brooke was white.  Tommie WAS A DIFFERENCE MAKER and Dr. Tom made the right decision for the right reasons.
