Huskers Face SWAC Preseason Favorite Southern Sunday

The Nebraska women’s basketball team continues its four-game home stand by playing host to Southern University on Sunday afternoon at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Tip-off between the Huskers (4-0) and the Jaguars (2-2) is set for 2 p.m.

Nebraska improved to 4-0 on the young season with a 78-55 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Thursday

Southern comes to Lincoln for the first-ever meeting between the Huskers and Jaguars as the preseason pick to win the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Senior post player Jasmine Jefferson leads the Jags with 16.0 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, while junior guard Kendra Coleman has contributed 13.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists per contest.

Southern brings a 2-2 record to Lincoln after suffering a 77-64 loss at Rice on Thursday night. Coach Sandy Pugh and the Jaguars have dropped back-to-back games after a 74-67 road loss at Florida A&M.

Nebraska’s front line of Jordan Hooper, Emily Cady and Hailie Sample are expected to make their 72nd consecutive start together.

Huskers win it 87-64.

Emily Cady with a monster game 18 points 14 rebounds. JHoop led the Huskers with 23 points and 8 boards. Tee Laudermill lays in 12 and Rachel Theriot puts in 13 to go along with 8 dimes.

I thought we were a step slow on the defensive end especially on the perimeter. We need to fight through the screens better.  It didn't look like they were prepared to face that type of speed. Although they played much better the second half. I think we need to finish under the bucket much, much better than we do.

It was a good preparation for teams coming up on the schedule.  Don't know why Brandi didn't suit up. Hope she's okay.

We have such a long way to go.  Nowhere near the 10th rated team in the country right now.  Interior defense was a problem as well, Row 6. Despite her scoring numbers, Hooper was not herself today.  Contact really bothered her.  She still is best at spot up shooting; a ways to go yet putting it on the floor and taking it to the hoop. Sample struggled, and Connie got in her grill with a lot of vigor--that has hardly ever happened. Finally, we had issues at the line.  Cady is our best overall player right now, and she gave great effort once again.  Theriot had some nice looks on offense.  When she gets the ball in the right spot, she's money.  Teara gave us to some energy in the second half and made some plays.

Don't know if anyone else noticed, but I believe we almost lost Theriot for the day in the 1st half.  Looked like she tripped on a fast break and it appeared she nearly sprained an ankle.  She winced and walked just ever so gingerly for a couple of seconds.  Close one.

Well if that speed bothers the huskers, then they are in trouble when they go to no. Carolina man are they fast.

Yeah we noticed that twister she must have had that ankle taped up fairly snug because she came back and it looked like it didn't bother too much.

What's up with our charity line tosses? Are they not used to the arena background yet? Jordan & Emily are usually almost automatic from the line.

Little Sadie shooting pretty good from behind the arc these past two games. Hope she can keep it up that'd be a nice weapon to have if she can come in and consistently knock that shot down. She's still got that bunny hop when she shoots though. Luckily it didn't get called this afternoon.

The early season is to develop some players to enter conference season.  I don't expect this team to beat UNC at Chapel Hill, it appears to me that every other non-conference game is winnable.  Barring injury, this team will be in the thick of the B1G race this year.

Since some of you are so worried about this bunny hop as you called it, I had a talk with Tom Tvrdy (Hannah's father)) at the game about this.  He told me that it is a legal move as long as one or both feet are on the ground when catching the ball before making the 'bunny' hop.  Emily and Hannah worked on this a lot in high school.  Sadie picked up bad habits in high school and that is why she gets  called on this periodically.  She is working on it but in the heat of battle bad habits are hard to break sometimes.

I ain't too worried about it unless it would cost us a game, it cost us 6 points against Ark Pine Bluff. I still don't think you can catch the ball one foot or two on the ground hop and then take a shot. Unless you're in the NBA. And why would you teach your team to shoot like that in the first place?

The only reason I can think of is to better position the feet for the shot.  But I know of other clubs that teach kids to catch the pass so when they land, their feet are already in position and they can immediately go into their shot.

This may have been the only game I get to see live, and I noticed a couple things that the radio and TV don't show.

This team is crazy slow off the ball. This can be fixed, but the hustle isn't there.

The set offense is a well oiled machine. Despite a lack of real speed, double screens and fakes are really good.

T' is a really fun on ball defender. I love watching her frustrate a dribbler.
