redsteve Posted November 29, 2023 Report Posted November 29, 2023 (edited) This may not be our toughest game of the year, but hopefully we start fast and set the tone early. Expect the entire bench plays tonight if we in fact get a good start and take control of the game. We might see some individual good scoring/rebounding games by our girls. The last game should have a bit of a wakeup call. Wonder if we'll see some full court press....if we have enough able bodies to do it anyway. The owls have three starters that usually does the scoring. One guard in particular. They appear to be a decent team on paper. But maybe not B1G caliber. Cazzie22 Posted November 29, 2023 Report Posted November 29, 2023 We need to put together 4 quarters of quality basketball at both ends of the court. FAU seems to be guard oriented and have a 6’5” freshman center from the Netherlands. It’s time for Nebraska to show some fire and get after people. I don’t want to stagger towards mediocrity. Quote
12dozen Posted November 29, 2023 Author Report Posted November 29, 2023 Any updates on Stewart? Quote

Merlin Posted November 30, 2023 Report Posted November 30, 2023 Halftime the team is still in love with the three. 6-18. Appears to be a big drop off in defense when you take some of the starters out. Cazzie22 1 Quote

Cazzie22 Posted November 30, 2023 Report Posted November 30, 2023 We are not a good shooting team from three yet we keep casting them up. Season stats say 26%, that’s not good. Our determination to platoon substitute is killing us. We should be up by 15-20 not 7. The subs can play when the game is decided. All About the Corn, Neb Nets, Merlin and 2 others 5 Quote

Cazzie22 Posted November 30, 2023 Report Posted November 30, 2023 Just now, 12dozen said: And Hake. And Krull. ???? I can’t explain it. Hake can shoot but everything else is a liability. White should be playing at least 15-16 minutes per half. Our rotation and our offense is a mystery. All About the Corn 1 Quote

Cazzie22 Posted November 30, 2023 Report Posted November 30, 2023 A win over a less than impressive opponent. I hope for a better start and better shot selection against Georgia Tech. Merlin 1 Quote
Cazzie22 Posted November 30, 2023 Report Posted November 30, 2023 To be fair to Coach Williams, in her post game comments she was trying to limit starter minutes to be rested for Georgia Tech Saturday afternoon. 12dozen 1 Quote

All About the Corn Posted November 30, 2023 Report Posted November 30, 2023 We need to get both Potts and Markowski going to start games. Both do well in the paint, and at the FT line. Props to AM for improving at the FT line this year (82%). What I do not want to see from her is shooting 3's. She is at round 12-13%. We need to play to the strengths of our players. Too many players firing from the 3 point line and maybe shouldn't be. Neb Nets, Cazzie22 and Merlin 3 Quote
Huskerfanzzz Posted November 30, 2023 Report Posted November 30, 2023 I agree. Too many threes. Also, the level of defense really diminishes when the starters are out. It's painful to watch at times. I especially cringe when Petrie is in for AM, because she is not strong on defense inside. It will help when AS and MM are back. Also Hake is a liability on defense, but I liked her confidence on offense last night. Cazzie22 and Neb Nets 2 Quote
12dozen Posted November 30, 2023 Author Report Posted November 30, 2023 (edited) Things I like, so far. I like our options at the 3 and 4 positions. The Kendal's and the Newbies (Potts and Petrie) are athletic, long, fairly tall, and hustle. They're not all providing the offensive fire power we'd like (yet), but have potential. We need to get Stewart back on the floor. I don't think Petrie is a post player. Even with Weidner out, we have some depth at the guard positions. White and Shelley should get the bulk of the minutes. Historically, Jaz seldom leaves the floor. Hake, NIssley, and Krull are OK off the bench. Krull is the better defensive option, but all can light it up at times. Lastly, Markowski is a stud. She might miss way too many bunnies, spend too much time out by the 3 point line (offense and defense), but I doubt that is improvisation. She is giving great effort. It has been awhile since we saw a post player improve from one year to the next. Good to see. I also like the team togetherness (what you can see with limited access). I doubt Weidner has missed a game since injured. Stewart is still in a boot, but she's on the bench. And, MM, 2 days from the NCAA volleyball tournament, going in as the number 1 seed, is right there on the bench, supporting her WBB teammates. Enjoyed the win ladies. Well done. redsteve Posted November 30, 2023 Report Posted November 30, 2023 Talking about minutes for starters and subs I looked at B1G stats. Markowski is again this year, leading the conference in rebounding. But interestingly she is not even in the B1Gs top 25 in minutes played per game. AM is 5th in points scored per game. So, what might be the results if she played more minutes....add Jazz, and Potts, and White etc.... By this time of the season you know who is the most effective at given positions. Maybe this subbing process will change once the B1G season starts ? I get it's still preseason so use lots of players....give them some real, on the floor time. Petrie (sp) is improving, And some others. Cazzie22 1 Quote

Tom Jones Posted November 30, 2023 Report Posted November 30, 2023 Three Point Attempts: I agree - way too many and often times early in the shot clock without probing the defense in hopes of learning something which would lead to good assist opportunities in later possessions. Last night the 3 pt shooting did pay off in efficiency as the game went on (e.g. 30% on threes equals 45% on two pt shots*), but we cannot count on late game successful threes coming along to create the appearance of efficiency. I hope that Nissley can develop into a 3 pt shooting threat and get closer to what she did in HS. Mid Range Shots: We don't take enough of them. Seems like shot selection weighs too heavily on 3's or under the basket. I would like to see more drives to the basket or pull up 2's especially by Moriarty - her athleticism on dribble drives to the basket seems to bring energy to game and has to be a concern for opponent's defense. Hake on Defense: Maybe I just don't focus on that when watching, but I don't see her as that much of liability. Not our best defender but not easy prey for opponent scoring either. I think she took two charging fouls last night after excellent hustle to get in position. More minutes for Markowski: YES! Quote
