Kind of wild that NU had only a total of 6 hits today, and four were HRs, to score 8 runs. Of course, having 2 HBP & 6 walks sure helps the cause for the Big Red.

 

Pitching was very solid today, as well. GBR

Great to clinch the series win in a game that easily could've gotten away from us with the offensive struggles. Felt like we swung at a lot of pitches outside the strike zone, and our defense was iffy, but the pitching staff really kept Illinois down and minimized damage well by limiting them to single-run innings. Haven't won too many games like that this season.

 

Ultimately, the difference was when Illinois made mistakes in the strike zone, we punished them. That's probably the biggest difference between this team and other Husker teams since we joined the B1G - this team has power up and down the lineup and punishes mistakes. A team that hits those mistakes for doubles and one-hop singles to the left fielder probably loses today. Very demoralizing for Illinois to give up back 2 back homers to start the game, fight back slowly for several innings, and then, just when they are ready to take control, give up another back 2 back.

 

Should be interesting tomorrow - Illinois is solid, so sweeping these guys to open B1G play would be an incredible result. I hate the soft schedule that we have for NCAA at-large purposes, but for the purposes of trying to win a B1G regular season title, this schedule is perfect. Tomorrow will be our toughest remaining B1G game at home, so it'd be a huge boost to win it. Guessing we'll have a lot of short leashes for the pitchers. Throw strikes, or we'll try someone else.
