The View from out here on My Limb
aphilso1 replied to Norm Peterson's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Leslee Smith? No way. Leslee was 100% bought into being a Husker. The dude rushed a recovery from an ACL tear to re-join the team. I probably wouldn't even include Duby in that group either, as Duby seemed more like a guy who just wasn't a good fit rather than a guy who didn't want to be here. Jordy, JBD, and Pitchford are the guys that I would guess were being referred to. -

Playing some Baylor-style zone defense with that lineup should work. -

I have 4/5 of the same starting lineup if McGowens is ineligible: Webster Teddy Banton Thor ...Walker...?...I don't know, I really have no confidence in how the Lat/Yvan/Walker/Andre platoon will shake out. I do think Thor is the odd man out if McGowens is cleared to play though. Trey, Teddy, and Banton are our three most talented players, and Fred will find a way to get them all on the court together. -
2017 PF/C Logan Strom -> UC-Davis
aphilso1 replied to Navin R. Johnson's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
Very odd career path thus far for Strom, who apparently now is transferring to Weber State for football. He has now redshirted at two different schools in basketball, and will be trying his hand at football without ever playing a minute of collegiate basketball. This only came up on my radar because I now live in Ogden, UT, which is the home of Weber State. I saw in the newspaper that he was trasferring here and I thought "hey, I know that name..." -
Yeah, 6'5"ish long athletic defender sounds pretty familiar. Add in the ball-handling ability of Wood and he may just have taken Akol's minutes. But Arop seems like a kid that will have one fantastic offseason and come out of nowhere into a major contributor. Will that be this offseason? I'm guessing not.
-
Trey if he's eligible. Banton if he's not.
-
That's a good point. Webster and Banton are the only guys that seem like natural ball handlers. Plenty of other guys that are playmakers with the ball in their hand, but not necessarily facilitators nor guys you want dribbling to break a press. So a third ball handler that is available for foul trouble/injury/suspension situations makes sense. Not sure that adds up to enough playing time to make the average D1 players happy though.

I'm back from a little bit of time off and am catching up on the latest roster turnover. I'd like to hear from anyone that is optimistic that Wood will be a contributor. What are your thoughts on his game, and why do you think he will fit in here? My knee-jerk reaction is that I don't think he'll crack the rotation this year. And given his proclivity to decommit multiple times during the recruiting process, that makes him appear to be a highly likely transfer candidate if he indeed is not in the rotation. But I'd love for someone to convince me I'm wrong! So to any Elijah Wood fans -- please let me know why I should jump on the bandwagon.

SKC got a great draw! I'm pretty excited to see how my boys do this year. I think we've got top of the table potential.

Is today D-Day for Husker Hoops?
aphilso1 replied to Norm Peterson's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Teddy for me, too. I think he has the potential to put up Petteway/Palmer numbers but far more efficiently. If we end up being good this year, he's probably the main reason why. -
My favorite time-filler between college basketball and college football, Major League Soccer, is BACK!!! I'm bummed that I likely won't be able to view my beloved Sporting Kansas City in person this year, but I will take what I can get. https://www.sportingkc.com/post/2020/06/10/mls-back-all-26-teams-resume-season-espn-wide-world-sports-starting-july-8

I'm one of those weirdos that doesn't really follow the Husker football team. So when I read today that JD has been away from the team for 2+ months and is not communicating with the coaching staff, I was shocked. Can someone enlighten me on what led to JD taking a break from the team? And is this expected to be a permanent rift, or is he expected back for the season?
-
I'd take Teddy over LJ. And if the hype around Banton is even half true, then LJ would only be the third best player on the team.
-
I'd pass on him. One year of eligibility only, and it sounds like he expects to get a waiver to play immediately. So the question really is this: do you rock the boat and tell a current kid to leave, in exchange for adding one extra highly talented player to next year's roster? I think you only do that if it gets your team "over the hump" for that one year. Would LJ be enough to take us to the NCAA Tournament in Year 2 of Hoiball? No, I don't think that extra addition is enough. And in my book, being more competitive for the NIT isn't a juicy enough carrot to force a current player out the door. Nor is it worth losing trust with the remaining roster players. Nor is it worth adding an extra data point for other programs to negatively recruit against us.
-
I find this sad more than anything else. Cam clearly hasn't figured out that bashing coaches publicly reflects poorly on you as the player more than it does on the coach. Especially when the coaching staff gave you a half dozen second chances to change your behavior.

Last Year's Rotation vs This Year's Recruits
aphilso1 replied to aphilso1's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Kobe K. had the whole racism incident at Wisconsin. He seems to have a really solid case, especially since there is recent precedent from when Justin Fields was immediately eligible transferring from UGA to tOSU. I would be shocked if Kobe is ineligible this season. As for Trey, I don't know why the coaches think he will have his waiver granted. I am not aware of anything that makes his case special. I'm assuming his waiver will be denied, unless someone can provide info to convince me otherwise. -

Dang. You guys are right, my bad. That kinda puts a damper on this comparison. Regardless, I have edited my initial post so that it is more accurate. -
Last Year's Rotation vs This Year's Recruits
aphilso1 replied to aphilso1's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
He's a D-II transfer...doesn't that make him immediately eligible? Or is a waver required still? I thought you could go D-II to D-I without sitting a year, but could be wrong. -
All of you are wrong! he's a cross between Muggsy Bogues and Gheorghe Muresan

Last Year's Rotation vs This Year's Recruits
aphilso1 replied to aphilso1's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Answering my own question: Mack = Webster Cheatham >> Lat Thor <<< Teddy Burke < King Yvan < Andre Cross, Green, and Matej > Lakes Mack v Webster: Mack has more talent, but I think you want your PG to be more of a team leader even if his ceiling isn't as high. I'll call this a push. Cheatham v Lat: Easy call. Going with the mature senior with boatloads of experience. Thor v Teddy: Everyone always sells Thor short, and maybe I'm doing that again here. But I see Teddy as a guy that can absolutely take games over and carry a team on his back, whereas Thor is a complementary piece. Burke v King: King was a solid guard for a good B1G team, whereas Burke was a solid guard for a historically bad team. I actually don't see the gap in the players as being all that large (especially when you consider Burke's defense), but I think you have to give the nod to Kobe. Yvan v Andre: Two young, raw big men with upside. Edge to Andre for fitting Fred's system better. Three Amigos v Lakes: I'd take Lakes over Matej, but this isn't really a fair fight. It's 3-on-1. The versatility of those three different skill sets coming off the bench trumps Trevor's shooting. Overall: I'm taking the new guys. And that's not even including McGowens, since he isn't expected to be eligible. If he somehow manages to lace it up this season, then I think it's the new guys by a landslide since that would give us two players (Teddy and Trey) that can take over a game any time they step on the court. So what is my point? My point is that we potentially now have two full hockey-style line changes that would beat last year's team. Let the sunshine pumping commence.
