MLS and Sporting KC - Official Thread
aphilso1 replied to aphilso1's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
According to the stat nerds at ESPN, the projected cut line is 25 points. So your estimate of 24-26 is spot on. Or if wrong, at least you're in good company. If we can achieve the following results we should be in: @Canada (1) Honduras (3) @Mexico (0) Panama (3) @Costa Rica (1) Or looking at it another way, with 4 points in hand over Panama and 6 in hand over Costa Rica, the only realistic way either of those teams jump us is if we lose to them. The next three games can help us secure a WC bid, but even if we stub our toe a bit we will still be in a position to remedy that in the final two matches. -

Yeah, that would have been an amazing result. Oh well. First/second/third are all the same. So really Panama's and Costa Rica's results at the 4/5 are more important than what happens with Canada and Mexico. -

Would've been nice to have had more of a lead in order to get key guys off the pitch earlier. Wasn't very good to see Weston and Dest limping around at the end of the match. But yes, I'll take 3 points anytime. And Los Ticos got the W against Panama, so the there's now a bit more separation from that 4th place spot in the table. Heck, Mexico even got a scare against a 10-man Jamaican squad. Overall it was a good night in CONCACAF. -

It's nice to dream of 9 points, but 7 is more realistic and still keeps us in the driver's seat for qualification. If we win tomorrow, I fully expect a conservative "just get a point" mentality for the match up in Canada. CONCACAF should get all 4 of the competitive teams into the World Cup this year. Whoever finishes #4 will be a massive favorite against the winner from Oceania. Hopefully Mexico is the team that finishes fourth and has to sweat it out for one extra match. -

Sporting must have been reading our thread, because in the past two weeks they've signed a handful of young international players. Seems like the one with the biggest transfer tag and highest expectations is Marinos Tzionis, whose skillset sounds like a carbon copy of Daniel Saloi's. With Shelton expected to play primarily at the #9 this season thanks to Pulido's injury, it does make sense that SKC would look to add a third winger to rotate with Johnny and Daniel. I'm still pretty concerned about our defensive backs, and also not sure we can rely on an offense based entirely on scoring goals from the wings. But as a Nebrasketball fan I am used to generating my own optimism around a team with glaring weaknesses, so in a sad way this 2022 SKC roster feels like a perfect fit. -
Didn't Nebraska offer Phillips? IIRC, Harrison was looking for an academic fit more so than football. I thought he gravitated towards Stanford and the Ivy League schools, and thus Nebraska knew it wasn't worth pushing hard. But I'm pretty sure Nebraska offered him a scholarship and he would have had a spot at DONU if he had wanted it.

After watching the interview, I can't help but focus primarily on Kobe's initial response: Question: is there anything you'd like to clarify about your radio comments? Answer: "No. I said what I said."
-
Agreed. Bryce still seems to launch too many contested 3s, but everyone else has gotten much better about taking in-rhythm open looks unless late in the shot clock.

I honestly didn't even realize Gretna was in Class A, much less that they won it. Wow. When did they make the jump from B?

Shut Up Sipple! - Why Fred Should have at least 5 years
aphilso1 replied to NUdiehard's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
The "who are we going to get?" argument is valid in specific situations. Namely, when you have a good program that has stagnated. It's worth considering replacement candidates prior to firing the coach, because you want to know whether making the change is more likely to raise the program to "great" or lower the program to "meh." See Frank Solich firing for example. Or Bo. Or for a non-Husker reference, Gus Malzahn. Those were all situations were you should only make the change if you think you'll land a coach that's a clear upgrade. As for this current Nebrasketball situation though? You are 100% correct. Throwing a dart at any successful mid-major coach should lead to better results. -
I've decided that this moment, January 19th, 2022, is the rock bottom for our program. We are a dead lock to place last in the B1G again. We got beat by a directional low major school this season, again. Rutgers, the historical laughingstock of the Power 5 in literally every sport, beat us in "name your victory margin" fashion. All these things are very, very bad. But the reason why this is the true rock bottom is that there is no hope for improvement. In every previous failed season, there has always been something to look forward to next year. Whether that's a young returning nucleus of players, or a couple intriguing prospects in the recruiting class, or even the belief that it's bad enough to expect a coaching change for the following year. But we have none of these things. 1. Returning players...who? We have never had continuity under Hoiberg, so there's zero expectation that we'll retain a core of underclassmen. 2. Recruiting. This year's additions were supposed to be The Chosen Ones. If they can look so lackluster, then what expectation do we have that less heralded players will turn things around? 3. Coaching change. As has been reported, firing Fred after the season would trigger the largest buyout in college basketball history. Even waiting a year would still make the buyout tied for the largest ever. And this is while the breadwinning football program is also likely less than a year away from an expensive coaching change. From a business perspective, we are married to Hoiberg for at least another 1-2 seasons. Now add in the Kobe Webster bombshell interview, where he said that coaches are unwilling to hold players accountable. And even when some players try to hold others accountable, they are told to go pound sand. That's the culture we are stuck with for the next 15-27 months. No wonder the fanbase has drifted into apathy. If the players and coaches don't care, then why should we? Losing stinks. But losing with no hope is the worst. There is no further damage that can be done to make the situation worse than it already is. Even NCAA sanctions would be an improvement, because that should in theory allow for the coaching staff to be fired "with cause." There can't possibly be anything worse than losing every game, with no hope for the future, and secretly pulling for an NCAA sanction. This has to be rock bottom.

I absolutely would have believed that about Frost. Hoiberg though? I really thought he'd have us on the right track by Year 2.

Disagree on Keisei. Dude gets complacent ball-watching way too often. Wilcher plays hard but is too small to guard bigs and too slow to stay with anyone else. So it’s almost like his effort level is irrelevant given his athletic shortcomings. That leaves Walker as the only able-bodied, healthy, effort guy. And that is why we stink. -

Coming into the game, I probably would have said that 2 fouls on Walker, Bryce, or Eduardo before the first media timeout would be the worst case scenario. So of course, all three of them picked up a pair. -

I like that structure as a fan but not from a logistics perspective. $3.25M in bonuses is a pretty obscene amount to have to keep in the coffers for just one coach. That would be burning a hole in the AD's pocket, seeing that amount sitting there but untouchable. Especially since it only gets paid if something historic happens. So you still have to have the money available in case the bonus is triggered, but realistically it won't happen.
