Per his Twitter account @JackMcVeigh1, he has committed to Nebraska. "Ecstatic to join the family with @CoachMiles @chrisharriman24 and the team!"

I don't think anyone is asking Benny to score. But, Benny has to be a THREAT to score. Like if you are going to guard him like Indiana and Iowa then's he's got to score 8-10 points. I hope that makes sense. He's allowing other teams to play us 5-on-4 defensively.

Gary Parrish reporting on Twitter than he suffered a hand/wrist injury in practice and is meeting with a hand surgeon today. Surgery could be as soon as tomorrow. Ugh. A bad break for Illinois.

uneblinstu's Post Game Chatter: ed 7, vol 14 - Iowa
hhctony replied to uneblinstu's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Since I said I'd start posting more, here goes. I actually really like this team. We just have Norman Dale-like depth right now. That's frustrating. In a league like the Big Ten it kills you. On to Rutgers, which I see is like in the top-70 in the RPI so we'd probalby need to expect another fight. I hope our fans can rally around this team at home. I know we've had some tough stretches at home, but we can still win some games. And, who knows what we could be at full strength. The facts are we are 3-4 without Moses Abraham. While most people thing his return won't have an effect, the numbers tell me different. -
I see where you are going with this Norm. It's not a stretch. What I really wish is we could have Ubel and Pitchford on this team right now given our injury situation. We win games like last night with one more big. I'm fairly confident of that. The last possession of the first half last night was big indicator of why. Hammond viotates the cardinal rule of man defense and they get a 3-point play to go up 7. Maybe not that big of a deal in the long run, but the hill is then smaller.
-
Dude is shooting 40% from 3, easily the best on the team in limited numbers. He had one game where he shot three 3s. The rest have been 1 or 2. I think we could handle 4-5 three point attempts from Benny where he rhythm catches and shoots...especially after penetration from TP/SS. Could potentially be 6 points per night (on 5 shots) and help to unclog the lane. 1000% agree with this.
-
We've reduced our offense, it seems to me, to a 3-man game with Pitch, TP and Shields and then the other two guys just stand on the other side of the floor. At least is seemed like that last night. Maybe I am missing something there.

A Closer Look at the Season-Long Box Score
hhctony replied to HuskerActuary's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
You are a piece of work. Good luck with DePaul tonight. -
I'd say this (2014-15) team would beat that team in 8 of 10 games.
-
This is a hell of a point. TP and Shavon have taken 49.1% of our shots this year. No one else has taken 100 shots (Pitch is at 99). I think it also speaks to our lack of "running offense" and getting good looks for anyone. But, I also agree with your point in that we have lesser players pass up good shots to get TP or Shavon a difficult one. That makes little sense.

What gets me on Fuller is this: If Moses and Leslee were healthy, he wouldn't even be a thought right now. And, I thought he'd be a nice addtion to this team as a RS freshman. I hope he stays confident, keeps working hard and figures out a way to get in the rotation. He'll be a nice help.

Need a Northern Iowa-type shooting effort (14-for-51) from the field from the Hawkeyes. Certainly doable. Many different outcomes in this one if you ask me. I can see a way for us to win and a way for us to get run out of the gym. Let's see if they can guard TP and Shields though. Would love to see those to aggressively attacking the hoop and shooting free throws.

"I figure it's about time I start doing some posting....." Nebraska basketball is in the pooper as I type this. It's been a rough year. I've been kind of noticably absent from this board for awhile. Even last year. When we got hot, I quit watching, so I thought if I started watching it would ruin us. Well, I watched the second of Ohio State and the NCAA game, so you tell me. At any rate, I've decided to really start watching this team going forward. I'm gonna DVR games and really watch. I watched most of the second half against Indiana. This was my initial take. And, what I really think is happening. 1. I called us lazy on Twitter. In retrospect, I'll use another word -- tired. Our five starters over the past seven games have played an average of 36 minutes per contest. It was summed up for me at the end of the game when Petteway lost the ball to Ferrell after rebounding a missed free throw. It looked like a lazy play. TP got the ball, but didn't block out; Yogi came in from behind and slapped the ball off his leg. It was a tired play. 2. We miss Rey more than we could have realized. He was a shooter that we could set up Shield and Pettaway with and keep the defense honest. He also helped free things up for Pitch. While he didn't score much (7.3 ppg) he was enough of a threat that teams had to play him honest. Bascially, Terran Smith is not yet Rey and we don't trust Nick Fuller (who you would think could be a match-up nightmare) enough yet on the defensive end. 3. We miss Leslee way more than we could have realized. He allowed us to disperse minutes. Consider last year: Pitch (23.2), Leslee (16.8), Rivers (20.0). This year: Rivers (29.8), Pitchford (27.8). This is mind blowing to me. I don't think there is a soul on the board who thought we'd be playing David Rivers for 30 minutes a game. 4. The Parker/Webster switch. Last year, Webster played 22.8 minutes per game and Benny at 14.9. This a bit skewed considering Benny went from non-existent when DB was here and took over more minutes at the end of the season. This year, Benny is playing 30 and Tai is at 19.5. It's interesting to see how this might play out going forward. 5. The role of Nick Fuller. I think many had high hopes for him this year (count me on this bus) and it just hasn't clicked for Nick yet. That said, he's a freshman. If it does click and he can fill even 10 spot minutes that could really help us. As Miles said in the OWH today: Can we fix it this year? I don't know. I think that the loss of Abraham and Leslee Smith both has cost us three games, at least. And, if both would have been healthy all season as Miles planned? That puts you in a heck of a nice 9-man rotation. I'm not even sure what I'd do to help? Can we play zone a little bit? Maybe, though I don't think Miles wants to do it necessarily. And, when you have a tough time rebounding, rebounding from a zone is even more difficult. I'd reckon we'd get killed on the boards going zone. I think offensively, we do get stagnant more than we like. We try to run set stuff instead of maybe just trying to run motion and get looks for anybody. We get into 1-on-1 and 2-man set stuff more times than not. The one thing we really lack is confidence. Benny and Tai need to be scoring threats and teams are guarding them like Doug Gottlieb. That means we are playing 3-against-5 a lot of times offense. It'd be nice to see if we could get Tarin Smith going. I think he is the guy we could get "confident" the quickest. Even over Tai and Benny. I do love Benny's motor though. I don't know that we can stay on the same floor with Iowa. We've got to hope for a Northern Iowa type game. Once that is methodical -- in the 50s -- to have a chance. If they are shooting well and playing at tempo we'll be in trouble. So, I have posted a post and I bought a Heart Over Hype shirt at the women's game on Saturday to see if I can change our fortunes. Don't blame me either way.

huskerfever -- They say 1.0 per possession is good offensively and you are playing good defense if under 1.0 per possession.

Tulsa beat Creighton pretty handily as well. Tulsa might be a pretty good ball club. Tim Miles alma mater is better than both Nebraska and Creighton. Even though they are 2-8 in the NAIA. :-) University of Mary (2-8) > South Dakota School of Mines > SE Oklahoma State > Tulsa > Incarnate Word > Nebraska.

I didn't search too far, here. But, is he off? I thought he'd contribute and he's played nine minutes this season. Is he that far behind?
-
Auroran -- Thanks. I'm the only guy from Hamilton County who can't embed a Tweet. So annoying.

The Kansas Assassin is N, per Brian Rosenthal on Twitter. Ali Farokhmanesh, former Northern Iowa player, is joining Tim Miles' #Nebrasketball staff as graduate assistant coach, Miles announces.

Who do you want on the Nebrasketball 2014-2015 Schedule?
hhctony replied to Nebrasketballer's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Living in Grand Island and being involved in the Grand Island Sports Council we'd love to do this, but I don't think opportunity would ever come up. We do feel we have decent opportunities for a women's game as well as a spring volleyball exhibition. That's about it. I think the program would be silly to give up 5,000 tickets to play in Grand Island. We have been quite please with the Heartland Hoops Classic; y'all should come watch next year. -
After visiting promising Rivals 150 recruit Edward Morrow in Chicago, Nebraska Head Coach Tim Miles reportedly interviewed with Marquette's coaching search committee, the Journal Sentinel has learned. Previous candidates known to have interviewed for the Marquette job are Cuonzo Martin of Tennessee, Ben Howland, formerly the head coach of UCLA and Pittsburgh, and Duke Assistant Head Coach Steve Wojciechowski. Rumors circulated late yesterday that Martin has withdrawn his name from consideration for the job. In just two years at Nebraska, Miles took Nebraska to the NCAA tournament for the first time in 16 seasons. Nebraska finished 4th in the Big Ten Conference. Losses to Ohio State in the Big Ten tournament and to Baylor in the NCAA tournament dampened what otherwise was a breakthrough season for Miles and Nebraska basketball. Formerly at Colorado State, where he also turned around its basketball program and took it to the NCAA tournament, Miles is considered both a great recruiter and strategist, according to sources close to the search. Originally considered a compromise hire after Nebraska failed to spark interest from Howland, Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon and others it sought to interview, the affable Miles endeared himself to the Nebraska fan base with his energy and enthusiasm. Nebraska fans filled its new arena this year and averaged over 15,000 in attendance. Outgoing Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne spoke highly of Miles' organizational and presentation skills during the interview process with Nebraska two years ago. Louisville Associate Head Coach Kevin Keatts, thought to be on the list of potential candidates, recently accepted an offer to be head coach at UNC-Wilmington. No other known candidates have scheduled or conducted interviews with the search committee. Several sources within the Marquette program expect a new coach to be named by this weekend's Final Four games in North Texas. --------------------------------------- Clearly we know what day it is today, but I fell for this hook line and sinker. My brother and a buddy were in on it. God, I'm laughing so hard I can't even explain it.

This would make a ton of sense. I believe Miles would have been on staff for his early years at Northern State, as well.

While the officiating was suspect, I posted this on Facebook and will stick by it. The game is called differently in the tournament and the B1G does their teams no favors by calling a completely different game during the season. In addition to today, Ohio State had 14 fouls to Dayton's 12 (not a big deal, but when Craft had four that completely changes things for the Buckeyes) and Iowa had 28 fouls to Tennessee's 14. Not surprised that John Behlein, Bo Ryan and Tom Izzo were the B1G coaches to advance. Understand defense without fouling. I think the league does there teams no favors by allowing play so physical that it does not translate into the tournament. Michigan, State and Wisconsin have best players to adjust. Nobody else did. Something Huskers will have to figure out.
