  1. It shows you're not just giving him a year because his contract number is so high. Every coach recruiting against us will say Fred is only here for a year to get his contract number down and then he's gone after the season. You can nip that in the bud AND spread the payments you are paying out a little bit. Like I said it's basically making this season a freebie without lowering his overall payout AND giving recruits a reason to see this being more than a one and done pump and dump cash rideout. It also gives Fred a potential extra year and $3.5M payout if he does well in exchange for lowering the buyout if it doesn't improve. Otherwise why would Fred agree to lower the buyout? You gotta give something up and this is basically a no lose way to do it.
  2. Explain? From what I understand they have the guys classified into 3 groups. Bigs, Wings, and Guards (pointguards) And I don't know where this notion that one guy is recruiting the entire roster but it's not even remotely correct. It seemed to be the case when Abdlemassih was at St. Johns but not here. Each coach is in charge of one group. Gates is in charge of the point guards. That's easily our worst position and where much of our issues are. Wether it's players not being good fits or simply not being good point guards, aside from Banton it's been a rough ride and it doesn't look like it gets better next year. Who's running the point next season? Abdelmassih's primary role is recruiting, especially the wings. He did that pretty well. - we have several highly ranked classes and a couple nba kids on the roster. Haven't said that in a while. Loenser is our best on floor development coach. It doesn't look like it with the record but several players have had some advancements. But accountability is an issue and other than Fred (fred gets 90% of the blame) this is the guy I would put most of the rest of that on. he's definitely our best floor coach as far as the assistants go. Adjustments needed but a little more authority and accountability could probably help. - I think Loesner is in charge of recruiting the Bigs but I'm not sure. Possibly getting help from Holt? I'm not sure who our primary on bigs is but I assume it's him or Abdelmassih. Doc doesn't recruit and just helps Fred and orchestrates the defense. He's a non factor going forward I believe if I hear correctly. And Katsantonis just handles the portal stuff. Among other non recruiting duties. If you're going to make a switch Gates seems the obvious choice. And I think Gates is a terrific coach. I wouldn't fire any of them. I would make adjustments and fix the problems. I don't know why we keep bringing in bad fits at pg. But he's the guy coaching them. Loenser and Abdelmassih at least have shown to be able to do what they need to do here under Fred and our point guards have been our problem. What exactly am I missing? If you think we're recruiting the wrong guys, okay but that's on the head coach. Hire a recruiting coordinator who evaluates the recruits these guys target to provide oversight if you want. But how bout we don't fire the guy who's bringing 5 star NBA talent to Lincoln AND signing them just because things aren't working elsewhere.
  3. I don't see any way they fire Hoiberg before next year. Which means you need to give him something he can recruit on but also make an adjustment to his contract. Best way might be to keep the same dollar amount but add an extra year to the back end. So while his last extension ran through March 31, 2027 and added $3.5M to the deal, his new deal would run through March 31st 2028 but add $0 to the deal. Giving him the ability to recruit well but save the university money. It essentially makes this season a freebie for Nebraska while still technically extending the contract for recruiting. I would also like to see a provision where a. The contract automatically adjusts back to where the extra $3.5M gets reapplied in as soon as he wins an ncaa tournament game. So he gets back to net neutral with an extra year on top. And b. If Nebraska doesn't go .500 next season the buyout gets lowered and if there's no tournament bid by 2027 it gets lowered further. Along with the tournament win triggering a readjusting the contract language to add back the extra salary it would also reset the buyout to current. As for assistants.. Doc will do what he's expected to do after the season. And we will see what happens with that. Abdelmassith did his job on the wings. Anyone thinking he should be let go is nuts to me. I also think Loenser has done well but he above everyone not named Fred Hoiberg is the one who I think kobe's radio comments might say a change is needed. This is the guy that should be holding many of these guys accountable. But I would maybe give him a year to see if things improve. There's no denying that while the losses suck, he's helped guys improve and I want to see how this front court looks next year before I judge fully. That all said, Armon Gates. I don't understand what the problem is but how do you go from turning out all conference point guards at Northwestern and helping Glynn Watson have his run (though Gates didn't recruit Watson) to bringing in Cam Mack and the utterly futile pg hole this year? I know that losing Banton was a little late and a bit of a shock but what was your plan here? Verge is a good player but what is the deal? And who is the next pg? Did you recruit one? If there's any shakeup of the staff I think Gates is where you have to start. PG recruiting and development hasn't exactly been great and while credit for Banton is warranted does it get offset by the utterly season destroying production of the pg position as of late? I don't know. I think the biggest changes need to be in mindset rather than personnel, but who knows at this point. If It were me I would restructure Hoiberg's deal as above. And make it perfectly clear that the assistant coaches are in a one year save or die situation. Either the players show marked improvement in production yes but moreover defensive accountability, and Honestly the basic ability to play together and play fundamentally sound, team basketball. And improvement in the recruiting efforts of Gates for sure (expecially when looking at team cohesion) but also improvement in the front court from Loenser expecially block out and rebounding.
  4. I would be very leery of hiring Mcassland. It's hard to tell how much of his success is to him and how much is his assistant coach Russ Hodge. I am not sure that's not another Tim Miles/Craig Smith and possibly Fred Hoiberg/Otzelberger deal.
  5. Unless there's something behind the scenes that one of the assistant coaches (ie a health issue) there's not a single assistant coach here that we have a hope in hell of upgrading from. Forcing an assistant coaching change for the sake of making a change is just cutting off your nose to spite your face. Those of you who chose this option, which assistant coach(es) are you dropping and who are you replacing him with? This is NOT like Football. Hoiberg didn't hire his drinking buddies with AAU level resumes and talent. On paper this is legitimately one of the best staffs in the conference if not college basketball. Every one of these guys have proven they can handle this job if allowed to do. The question is can Fred do it without Otzelberger.
  6. Mackwas suspended for 6 games this season and fined 220k by the university because of a scandal where the ncaa has charged Mack with a level 1 infraction and 2 level 2 infractions and Louisville with 6 level 2 infractions from an incident where after uhe fired an assistant coach he then recorded the assistant coach trying tried to get Mack to pay him to keep quiet about the violations they had committed. The fired assistant coach pled guilty to extortion got a year of probation and a $10,000 fine. Mack is also likely to be suspended by the ncaa for next season if he coaches. Louisville is still on probation for the recruitment of Brian Bowen II. A level 1 violation and 3 level 2 violations. under Pitino. They forfieted several years of winning seasons including a national championship and are waiting for punishments related to the new York southern district corruption case at least 3 level 2 infractions and allegations of misconduct and recruiting violations with Adidas. There is real serious potential that Louisville is going to get the basketball equivalent of the death penalty- a 4 year postseason ban. They are on probation, have at least one and as many as 3 level 1 infractions and at least a dozen level 2 infractions pending. They didn't want to do it but Louisville had no choice but to fire him.
  7. Reading that Twitter thread shows me exactly why we have the athletic program we have right now. We deserve it. There is some genuinely sickening posts by people in that thread (and that I have seen elsewhere) that make me feel ashamed to be in the same fanbase as they are. There's nothing wrong with being invested in a team or a program and want to see them win. But at the end of the day these are 18-22 year old kids who have been offered and accepted an opportunity to go to school and play a game. Even though they are being paid now, regardless of that fact they don't owe us anything. Cheer for them if you want, or don't. Invest money and or time to watch or dont. But they don't owe us anything. And that includes the coaches too. They are paid to do a job. If they do it well they will continue to get paid to do that job, if they don't they won't. They may be dependent on the fanbase to make that continue to happen but they don't owe us anything. - Just to be clear these comments are not about anyone or anything on this forum. It's just a general statement about what a small but vocal and growing part of this fanbase has shown themselves to exist these past few years. It's a part of the fanbase that has always existed and exists in every fanbase, but it is becoming more vocal, more visible and more widespread amongst the Nebraska Fandom of late and it needs to be snuffed out or we will continue to have and to deserve the outcomes we have been getting from our athletic programs. - notably the men's side.
  8. There's zero reason those guys shouldn't be recruiting too. And they do. At least those two do. But it's not their primary role. Coaching is. Neither of them are on the same level as Abdelsmath as a recruier. And Abdelsmathisn'tanywhereclosetobeingas gooda coach as the other three. We haven't had a recruiter with his connections and ability to get players to come here in decades if ever. My point is regardless of wether you think keeping Fred is the correct move or not, getting rid of Abdelsmath because people want a sacrificial scalp isn't just dumb it would quite possibly be the dumbest thing that this program has ever done. I am disgusted about what I have heard about this program under this staff's care but as much as I would have no real problem if they fired Fred tomorrow and wanted him fired as soon as I listened to our Sr. PG speak, I am actually now hoping he get another year, not because I have any faith Hoiberg is capable of turning things around I actually think the rest of this staff could. If someone from the Athletic department steps up and empowers them to do it. And if things don't improve enough at least you have shaved a bit off Hoiberg's deal and can try to bring in an actual capable head coach who might be willing to keep these assistants here, or at least one or two of them.
  9. I will say that anyone who thinks keeping Fred and getting rid of Abdelsmath is the correct move - you are dead wrong. Abdelsmath is a great recruiter. He proved it not only at iowa state with Hoiberg but at st John's. He was the only recruiter at St. Johns.. He built their entire roster between and it's no accident that Mullin who had taken the Red Storm to their first tournament in 5 years went from being safe to bring fired within days after Abdelsmath took the Nebraska job.. Abdelsmath is one of the best recruiters in the country. He brings in the guys Hoiberg wants just like he did at isu and st john's. If anything you do whatever you have to to get Abdelsmath to stay and recruit for whoever replaces Hoiberg. Abdelsmath is the only one who actually does his job. Hoiberg runs his program like a CEO. With each assistant having a specific job. Abdelsmath is there to recruit Gates is there to run the backcourt Loesner is there to run the frontcourt Doc is there to run the defense There have been criticizm of Doc but the big question Noone has asked (that I have seen) is what are Gates and Loesner doing? Those are the guys that are supposed to be doing the accountability and effort stuff. On paper this should be one of the best assistant coaching staffs in the country. Why are they all performing significantly under what they are capable of doing? This isn't all on Hoiberg. He's the head coach and makes the big salary so in the end it does but the things we are most critical of? Those are things Gates and Loesner and Sadler should be doing.
  10. I actually liked those teams. We're they good? No but they tried to be and they definitely loved playing here and did what they could. These guys don't care, or try or have anything for this program except what they can get as they wait for when they are able to leave for their next team. And those coaches while seriously lacking in certain areas at least tried to work with what they had to their maximum level. Fred has coaching abilities that he has no interest in trying to use. And certainly doesn't maximize his strengths to hide weaknesses. He doesn't know or care to know he even has weaknesses.I knew Doc and Miles had to go but I wasn't happy about it. I didn't smile when it happened. I think I might smile when many of these guys walk. And Honestly that might make me more upset than anything else.
  11. This pisses me off on so many levels. First of all this is jiust another showing that there is a significant amount of ineptitude on this coaching staff. BUT once again it's another complete and total lock, this team is full of guys that don't deserve a single thing they have been given. They don't deserve their scholarships. They don't deserve to wear that laundry or represent this state and university and they sure as hell don't deserve for anyone to pay money or spend time watching them play. I mean excuse me. You need your coach to do that for you? You're a fifth year damn senior, act like it. You shouldn't need your coach to hold you accountable. You shouldn't need your coach to hold your teammates accountable. That's your job. It's your damn team. You're the ones playing.
  12. Not yet. Ask me after. I fully expect to be wrong. I probably just ate some meat that was past It's date or something.
  13. I think we win this one. I'm probably wrong but I have a weird feeling and usually it tends to be right.
  14. To me this is different from every other coach decision in the last 20 years for Nebraska Basketball. There's no dispute that record wise he deserves to be fired. But he just signed arguably (absolutely as far as optics is concerned) the best class in forever. So unlike basically every coach in this position we have seen here in forever, there's a legitimate and very seeable chance that they can recruit their way out of this roster and fix the issues that are in this locker room. I see no reason to make a move until that is no longer the case. Basically I think we have a better chance of Fred getting lucky and hitting on a recruit or two that can totally flip the game than we are by going out and hiring yet another no impact coach who then has to recruit an entire new team anyway. One that will almost surely be worse than the one who will be coming in next season under Hoiberg. Now if next season comes out in a similar fashion and he once again shows no ability to coach the team, getting them to shoot and score efficiently, care about playing defense or working as a team? Then you move on. A less talented team who actually cares is at least worth investing time and money into. Unlike these guys.
  15. That's a really stupid comparison. Riley took over a team that was consistently winning 9 games and just needed a legitimate coach to take that roster over the hump. Fred took over a program with zero historical success and virtually nothing left on the roster.
  16. This is 100% on the players. These coaches know how to coach. They know how to recruit. But it doesn't matter how good you are as a coach if your best players hate each other and have no interest in playing team ball. The only question is has too much damage been done that they can't get new players or can they reset next year with new guys who actually deserve to wear the uniform and represent their school.
  17. Can't have anymore noncon losses. Expecially in these next 3 games. They need to decide over these next few if they are going to change what is needed to be the team that their potential shows they can be. If they can do that they can still put themselves in position to make a run at the tourney when Trey comes back. Otherwise they can continue to play selfish ball and we can all move on to other things.
  18. This is an interesting proposal, but it has a few issues. 1. The ACC owns the rights to it's members until 2036. Making it incredibly difficult and costly to poach any of those schools.-You can count Notre Dame as an ACC school. Which is why I left them off my list. In a perfect world Notre Dame, UNC and Virginia are desires 1 2 and 3 for the Big Ten, but they are not viable. 1a. Pitt and Syracuse add nothing of value. Penn State absolutely will veto any attempt at bringing in Pitt and adding Syracuse just makes the addition of Rutgers redundant. 2 For some reason the most important thing to this Conference is the Rose Bowl. Most of the Big Ten decision makers still absolutely refuse anything that jeprodises the intact and important status of that game so gutting the Pac 12 without significantly absorbing them is going to be a tough sell. 4 teams may be enough. I don't know 3. The travel for that division is a nightmare. You basically have one division that could drive to most of their games and another that has to live on an airplane the entire season. It's unfair and untenable.
  19. The Big Ten doesn't need to add any new teams. They need to add a Conference. Merge the BIG TEN and PAC 12 adding two extra teams in the process. Insert New League name here (28 teams) BIG TEN Conference (14 teams) EAST Division (7 teams) Indiana Maryland Michigan Michigan State Ohio State Penn State Rutgers NORTH Division (7 Teams) Illinois Iowa Minnesota Nebraska Northwestern Purdue Wisconsin PAC 12 Conference (14 teams) WEST Division (7 teams) California Oregon Oregon State San Diego State (or Kansas if you want it to be weird) Stanford Washington Washington State SOUTH Division (7 Teams) Arizona Arizona State Colorado Texas Tech USC UCLA Utah Each team plays the other teams in their own division (6 games) Then 2 teams from the other division in their Conference. And 1 game against each division of the other Conference. Giving each team a 10 game regular season. Then the divisional winners play in a Conference championship game. EAST champ and NORTH champ play each other in the Big Ten title game. WEST champ and SOUTH champ play each other in the PAC 12 title game. Winners play in the Rose Bowl for the League Championship. Winner plays the SEC champion for the National Championship. OR you say fluff the SEC and name the RoseBowl champion the National Champion As the new Big Ten/Pac 12 league is the only league that goes coast to coast and Border to Border.
  20. On the one hand *pardon the pun, this looks like a phenomenal hire. He seems like all the players in Chicago raved about him and liked him and he seems like he is excellent at player development. At the same time, I'm not sure how I feel about Doc not being an active coach on the bench. Our defense was really coming along despite the lack of practice time last season.
  21. So what are the odds this lands us his brother Simeon? He's currently ranked as the #8 overall player in the 2023 class. 2 5 star younger brothers in 3 years?
  22. Thor starts because With Delano, Teddy and Trey handling the ball and Lat being a sniper we don't really need another true scoring threat on the floor to start the game. Thor is good enough defensively against most 4's and enough of a threat from deep to be a 3 and D Stretch 4 with that starting group. He's also good at setting screens for those guys and taking the charges. That's what his role is. Stevenson is a better overall player but again he's not needed right now in that starting lineup. He along with Webster give us that scoring punch off the bench when a guy like Yvan is on the floor and Lat and Banton aren't. In fact you can even think of it that way. Stevenson is replacing Lat and Yvan is replacing Thor for the sake of offensive production even though they aren't playing the same positions or doing that scoring the same way. Once Walker and/or Andre are back I'd actually expect one of those guys to start next to Banton, Teddy, Trey and Lat and still have Stevenson coming off the bench with Kobe Yvan and Thor. FWIW. Thor is playing the role Trevor Lakes will likely take next year.
  23. They seemed disinterested and bored out there tonight. They started and finished like they were just going through the motions with a little work to actually win the game in the middle. One the one hand they won fairly easily playing that way.. but on the other hand that kind of stuff shouldn't be happening regardless of competition. Especially at this level. After Sunday there isn't a single team on the schedule we win against playing with that mindset.
