Huskers (7-20) vs Hawkeyes (19-8) game thread

I like the fight and toughness of this team tonight. Think they'll ride this out to the end, but not have to squeeze out the win. Could be one of those Ohio State losses this season you can walk away with a bit of pride in the effort. Let's say, we end this around a -10 loss. Much better than I anticipated going into it. -

Who predicted that we would be losing at halftime? -

We're going to need about a 13-point lead at half to have a chance in this one. But seeing a lot of hustle out of this squad. The most in a long while. -

So far I'm getting a vibe of "that's my coach" (confidence of another season) level of effort from this team tonight. -

Would you look at that. San Jose State on FS1 right after the Nebraska game tonight. I might stay up to watch some of that game. -
If you concede on losing the rebound battle every game, you better hope you shoot lights out, win the turnover battle, and take advantage of the foul line. There's a low margin of error if you can't shoot that night.

Pace and Space, positionless basketball, etc. http://www.dailynebraskan.com/sports/fred-hoiberg-s-pace-and-space-offense-part-one-guards-and-pace/article_4c7ff3f8-f07a-11e9-bc24-033eca86a0a0.html

Notice how reliant they are on the outside shot in these plays (especially in Big Ten play):
-
But what if your system doesn't include a true center who can properly defend and disrupt the Big Ten bigs?

All of us on this board are delusional. Take that Step 1 into Husker Hoops Anonymous. It'll be okay.

Timing and environment matter too. As much as I dislike comparing hoops to football... Nebraska was on the forefront of strength and conditioning programs, had highly visible and scarce media exposure, deep and highly touted walking program, and strong position in it's conference, well beyond the brand elements the program had to offer. That environment changed. Today, even a Sunbelt team has all of their games on TV (or streamed). Many other programs adopted the strength and conditioning program (so our players at every position were no longer stronger and faster than the competition). And recruiting pipelines have consolidated even more in the warm states. Although the brand is still a strong element, the environment has changed and has made it much more competitive/commoditized. I believe the same could be said with Hoiberg at Iowa State. He was on the forefront of different recruiting techniques and found that arbitrage. That's no longer an advantage and is more saturated now. I also wonder how much style of play in the Big 12 matter versus style of play in the Big Ten. Does his system work in a place like the Big Ten? I don't know. Could it? Maybe. But he has to relay on shooting lights out every night from beyond the arc.

I don't have the energy to dig into what the NCAA landscape actually looks like, but you've been harping a lot on keeping Hoiberg around at least another year, at the very least to lock in some of his recruits. I'm just curious what typical attrition looks like with changes in coaches, let along year-over-year attrition in this new NCAA environment. Is it something to really hang your hat on that they'll stick around? (I don't know.)

Sure seemed more like an opinion than a declaration.

and they were right Does that mean his buyout of $11M next season is too high?

This is going to fall on deaf ears given we now know that Fred is here next season. Do I think Fred has the potential to catch fire and somehow create a competitive team? Yes. But that's HEAVILY reliant upon getting guys in who can shoot 45-50% FG and 35-40% 3P. Is it likely (especially from what we've seen in 3 seasons)? No. But there's a chance. (I'm not putting money on it.) My stance this 2nd half of the season was "this is a financial decision, if Trev looks at the books and feels it's appropriate, then I'll support him in that, if it's not financially sound, I'll support him in that. Could never say the same with Moos." I'm kind of wondering based on today's news if it really wasn't strictly a financial decision though. I guess it's good timing for Trev and Hoiberg to squash any talk of moving on. And maybe that's just how Trev handles things. If so, it's kind of nice to have some leadership in the AD now.

Buyout next season reduces from $15M to $11M - $0.25M (savings in annual salary). Still not the most wonderful situation to be in, but much better than the situation Moos left us in.
-
Interesting stat to track. But more importantly, I'm happy you're able to find something to continue to keep your sanity this season.
-
I think I know some of the answers, but just throwing it open for dialogue. What's the difference between a 20+ loss season and a 17 loss season? We've had 10 of those in the last 13 seasons.
-
Take out his entire first season. He's still 14-40. Worst Winning Record at Nebraska (excl. 2019-2020): 1. Fred Hoiberg: 26%, 14-40 (4-31) (2020-2022) 2. Adolf J. Lewandowski: 28%, 24-63 (17-33) (1940-1945) 3. L. F. "Pop" Klein: 35%, 7-13 (3-7) (1945-1946) 4. T.J. Hewiat: 38%, 6-10 (6-2) (1909-1910) 5. Jerry Bush: 38%, 81-132 (39-79) (1954-1963)

Already did it with Moos...

"My right arm was broken, so I went into the doctor. She said I could either try some treatments and see if it will heal in a year, or just repair it today for a hefty fee. I decided to wait a year to see if it would heal. Then three months later, I broke my left leg. The doctor said it was badly damaged and recommended a full repair otherwise there might be some permanent impediments. But since I chose to wait a year for my right arm to heal, I'm just going to do the same to my left leg and see what happens."
