  1. We probably make the tournament last year if we land this guy. Could have ran him out at PG or Off guard.
  2. Were we on Mayen before we went out to see Mading or did we just happen to see Mayen while we were out there for Mading? That would be a question for Matt A once he signs on the dotted line.
  3. Notes and quotes Nebraska Postgame Notes - Haanif Cheatham finished with a team-high 16 points. It was his ninth double-digit effort in the last 10 games. - Cam Mack finished in double-figures with 11 points, along with six assists. Mack has at least five assists in 10 games this season. With his six assists, Mack has 91 total through 14 games this season. His 6.5 average is on track to rank third in school history and would be the highest since Brian Carr in 1986. - Dachon Burke Jr. finished with five points and five rebounds. With his five points, Burke brings his career total to 983. He needs 17 points to reach 1,000 career points. - Thorir Thorbjarnarson set a career high with five assists. He had four against Butler in the first round of the 2018 NIT. - Yvan Ouedraogo finished with four points and four rebounds. He is averaging 7.8 points and 8.4 rebounds over the last five games, dating back to Dec. 13. - Nebraska had made eight three-pointers against Rutgers, bringing its season total to 117 in 14 games. The 8.36 season average is on track to rank second in school history and the highest since 2001-02. - Rutgers picked up its first win in Lincoln. Previously, the Scarlet Knights were 0-4 against Nebraska in Lincoln. Nebraska Coach Fred Hoiberg On the physicality of Rutgers “Give them credit. They’re the most physical team we’ve played to this point. We talked a lot about that leading into this one and how important it was to try to keep them out of the paint as much as possible, and they got in there way too often. They make five threes a game and they hit five tonight, two early and three spread out over the rest of the game. Too often, defensively, we allowed them to get into the paint where we either had to help with the big or they were spraying it out and driving us out on long closeouts. Once they shot it, whether they made it or not, we had no chance of getting it off the glass, just too big and too physical. When we go out there with a defensive mindset and a defensive mentality, we have a chance to win, and when we don’t, we don’t give ourselves a chance. We have to find a way to correct it, get more consistent, on that end of the floor. It’s on me that we’re not more consistent right now and that starts tomorrow.” On Rutgers’ 18-1 run in the first half “Well we didn’t make shots tonight, that’s something that happens. It happened against Purdue, and in that game we kept guarding and had our best defensive stretch of the season. Tonight, we got off to a good start, obviously. We were hitting shots and getting out in transition. We were moving the ball and then when the ball stopped going in the hoop. I thought we were chasing down rebounds and got away from being solid on the defensive end. That allowed them to break us down on gambles late in the shot clock. We have to stay solid, take it one possession at a time when we dig ourselves a hole like we did. This is about coming back tomorrow and getting our guys and minds right because we have a heck of a game coming up on Tuesday. We have three days to get better.” On Nebraska’s effort “It’ll be interesting to see how it looks on film. I don’t know if it’s strictly an effort thing as opposed to just getting out of character when we got in that hole and they went on the big run on us. A lot of it is just staying in front of the ball. It’s tough to defend when you’re giving up blowbys. It just opens up so many things when they’re getting to the rim whether they’re converting or not. The most offensively rebounded shot is the layup and we gave up too many paint touches today. We have to get back tomorrow and make corrections.” Senior Guard Haanif Cheatham On not hitting shots “Yeah, I’m pretty sure we had a 10-8 lead. I think just the shots we weren’t hitting kind of messed us up on our offensive flow and defensive end. I think we had plenty of opportunities to extend the lead, get up to probably eight. [We] just couldn’t hit shots. One of those nights. Like Coach [Fred Hoiberg] and Cam [Mack] said, we’ll be back in the gym tomorrow and be ready for our next game against Iowa.” On the difference between Indiana and Rutgers “We were hitting shots I’d say [against] Indiana. All of the shots we took, a majority of them went in. Tonight, some weren’t falling like I said. In the game of basketball, you’re not going to hit 100 percent of the shots you take. It was one of those nights, and we’ll be back in the gym. We’ll be back, watch film, get back to who we are defensively and offensively and be ready for Tuesday night.” Sophomore Guard Cam Mack On the size and physicality of Rutgers “I mean Indiana was physical. We played them to the wires. [Tonight,] we’re not hitting shots and physicality and easy leak outs, easy boards, it’s just tough to win, but like coach [Fred Hoiberg] said, we’re going to come in tomorrow. [We’re] not going to dwell on it. We’ve got a big game Tuesday. Come in, work and get straight to it.” Rutgers Head Coach Steve Pikiell Opening statement "First of all, great environment, obviously. I have tremendous respect for Coach Hoiberg He's a great coach who I've known for a long time. He does a great job and they've been playing really well. They're a dangerous basketball team, and we haven't played well here in the past either, so I'm just pleased with our 40-minute effort tody. Getting a road win in this league is really tough to do, so I'm pleased with that, but that's a really good basketball team, well-coached, and I think he's going to do a really great job here." On making an effort to get Myles Johnson the ball and feeding the ball inside "It's always a game plan for us. Actually, Ron [Harper Jr.] is usually around the basket a ton too, Akwasi [Yeboah] got some baskets. We like to really share the game and see our box score and see that a lot of guys get shots up. We wanted to attack and share the game, and that's what we did, and we did a good job. Offensive rebounding wise, they really hurt us. They hurt us all night with that, and we are a really good rebounding team, so that's something we struggled with, I think we were giving so much help and we weren't closing out on our block outs. We shared the game, and that's what we do and are glad that those guys produced when we got them the ball." On Fred Hoiberg "Fred's doing a great job. The Indiana game in overtime, he beats Purdue one of the best teams in the conference. You know it takes time, and he'll do a great job. You got to figure your team out; you have to see what their habits are, you got to see who can play when the lights come on. There's a lot of things that you try to figure out like rotation, especially when you have a whole new team. He's a great coach, and he's got it pretty figured out. This league will challenge you; it challenges you on many levels."
  4. I think the plan was to see if he could make it to his 4th athletic director at Nebraska.
  5. This deal where you say that we don't need traditional big men seems to imply that we don't have them. We do in Yvan and Walker. Do we need better ones? Do we need more? Trevion Williams put up 18 points and 16 rebounds against us and we beat Purdue by 14. Overcoming a big post player having a dominant night is something that even this inconsistent team can do. Rutgers only took 15 threes last night because we didn't make them settle for threes.
  6. Update: Geo Baker is out with a thumb injury
  7. If anyone was having trouble posting before, I think I fixed it
  8. If they can find some shooting they might get there.
  9. Nebraska Cornhuskers (6-7) vs Rutgers Scarlet Knights (10-3) Date: Friday Jan 3rd, 2020 Time: 7:00 p.m. Arena: Pinnacle Bank Arena (15,000, 29th largest in D-I) Half Time: CHRISTIAN & SCOOBY Broadcast: BTN Rutgers Info Head Coach: Steve Pikiell Location: Piscataway, NJ Conference: B1G Nickname: Scarlet Knights KenPom rank: 51 Point Spread: Rutgers by 6 Depth: 9+ Previous history: Nebraska leads the all-time 8-4. 2019 had eventful meetups as the Huskers melted down at the RAC as part of a 7 game conference skid and beat the Knights in their B1G tournament run Shirt not to wear: Medieval Offensive Style: In the paint Defensive Style: In the paint Key Injuries: None Hoiberg Presser Cheatham Presser Discussion mostly focused on the start of conference play Players to watch: Geo Baker The Junior PG is first on the team in assists and steals, 2nd in scoring and blocked shots. He's the catalyst for Rutgers working their way into the paint on offense. Players to watch: Akwasi Yeboah The Kevin Cross sized Stony Brook transfer was originally recruited by Pikell. Yeboah was first team All-Conference last year and has been one of the few Scarlet Knights knocking down 3s Roster points PG SG SF PF C Pct 1 0 Geo Baker 6-4 185 Jr 23 Montez Mathis 6-4 205 So 1 Akwasi Yeboah 6-6 230 Sr 24 Ron Harper 6-6 245 So 15 Myles Johnson 6-11 255 So 17.1 As you can see, Rutgers rolls out a lot of height Ron Harper Jr. is more of a slasher than a shooter but draws plenty of contact and is a defensive stopper Center Myles Johnson is deadly when fed in the post and is a beast on the boards. He's a godawful FT shooter Mathis, like many Rutgers SGs, is a SG who struggles to shoot Texas transfer SG Jacob Young is the only player under 6'4" on the roster (6'2"). He takes a lot of shots and has been markedly worse than Mathis F Caleb McConnell has platooned with Yeboah and also has been shooting well from 3 Fr Paul Mulcahy is the PG of the future. He's very tall (6'6"). He also will rarely shoot at this point in his career Centers Shaq Carter and Mamadou Doucoure are depth for Myles Johnson The Skinny: This is a team that Nebraska does and does not matchup well with. On the plus side, Rutgers plays fast enough offensively so they're not going to cramp Nebraska's style and there should be transition opportunities. Their traditional centers will have to try and guard Nebraska's small ball lineup at times. Nebraska's pack most likely won't be burned from 3. On the minus side, get ready for possessions where Rutgers continuously misses and then rebounds the ball until they finally score. It's probable that the size of the guards will be enough to kill some of Nebraska's transition offense. The Knights have been defending without fouling. This appears to be the best team that Steve Pikiell has assembled at Rutgers so it's not entirely surprising to see them favored over this inconsistent Nebraska team. Is Rutgers ready to win a game on the road? They haven't just yet though they gave Michigan St a scare last month. Let us hope this Friday crowd is ready to carry the Huskers over the hump.   11. {wistfully deletes Bear Jones post}
  12. After watching some game film he has a lot better handles than I anticipated. We might have ourselves a really good get here if his knees are good
  13. Mayan is also shooting 82.4% from the FT line so I'd assume the shooting numbers with him aren't fluky. Seems pretty obvious that he will slot as a stretch 4 for us. I would wonder if we want to put any sort of significant additional weight on him.
  14. Nebraska nabs the commit from the 6'9" Sudanese Australian currently playing at Chipola CC after spending his first two years at TCU. Mayen will be a redshirt JR in 2020 with two to play. View full article

  16. Nebraska had the urgency/fire that was missing vs North Dakota. This was a very poor TAMUCC team who spent much of the night driving and kicking the ball to no one in particular, ending the night with 21 turnovers Neither team could get much going from the field. The difference was Nebraska making 15 more FTs tonight in a 21 point win The Islanders cut the lead to 10 at 38-28 with 15 minutes to go in the game but couldn't hold on to the ball as we kept turning their mistakes into points. That Mack to Green oop was something to see as well as Red Panda
  17. I was wondering what I was going to drink tonight
  18. Shaka trying to corner the market. I dunno, man. Let's say your'e a guy and your name was Jamie Williams and you met this perfect girl and find out her name is also Jamie Williams. Not personally sure I could pull the trigger there.
  19. Gonna shoehorn my lineup post into this end of the year thread. Since the Green suspension and the Curtis transfer our lineups have shifted slightly and we've gone away from the 4 guard lineup. The 5 remains a timeshare between Yvan and Cross with Kavas available if we really want to go small ball. The 4 is now a timeshare between Thor and Kavas Guards 1-3 are split between our 4 guards in Mack, Burke, Cheatham, and Green. Easley also for spot minutes. Arop brings rebounding to the table and possibly outside shooting but it seems unlikely he is going to crack the rotation this year unless we lose another player and it would probably need to be a 4/5.

  21. 2nd semester starts the 13th and last day to register is the 21st Seems probable he doesn't end up here though just because those other schools have a lot more to offer in terms of playing time for shooting guards
