Huskers (7-20) vs Hawkeyes (19-8) game thread

Two things stood out to me. Bohanon cannot guard any of our guards and Walker is a mismatch for rebracca. -

He also couldn't hold onto 2 passes down low. Cost them the possession. -

Denver has one pick at 20 Atlanta has two at 13 & 43. -
I personally think regardless of the scheme you run, as long as the execution is there you can succeed with it. Defensively, I'd say our scheme is too force turnovers due to being a glass deficit team. The caveat with that, you NEED to take care of the ball. They've struggled in that department. So there's why the defense is a mess. On offense I'd say in a perfect world, we move the ball around the court to get the best shot possible. Whether it be off dribble drives or dump offs. Also, play with some urgency. The issue for this during the season, the ball has stuck far too often. So I'd say execution has fallen short here. Which led to a more low post/high post oriented offense. At least, that was the idea. I personally really like Fred's offense and think it could be successful. Just needs to be executed. Ball can't stick like it has this year. That's at least how I see things.

Watching from the student section, he's the only actively engaged coach it seems. Armon talks to guys on the side, but it's mainly Loesner being vocal. It wouldn't shock me if he's the only one retained

Robin Washut - Derrick Walker
thrasher31 replied to Nebrasketballer's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Look at Pete Nance vs Derrick Walker this past week. That would be a reoccurring theme of what would happen if Walker were to play the 4. Having 2 posts who can't shoot and clog the paint isn't optimizing any offense. I think Walker still starts, but they'll need to find a new 4 or trust Wilhelm -
I'm getting my last deal at student tickets next year, so I'll renew too. Please be competitive next year
-
Just as you say that

Man. If yvan could've ever added a semblance of an offensive game, he'd be such a positive impact guy here.
-
This is something I've pondered a bit lately myself. System/scheme wise, you can win with most any scheme. Just need the guys to execute it. I personally think they're falling short in the execution, which is why there's a mess on offense often. Now, scheme wise, can it fit in the big ten? I personally think so due to MSU and Iowa running similar up tempo styles. Just need the right players to execute it. Fred adjusted his scheme a bit halfway through the year to feed Walker more and sort of run the offense through him, but it has seen not much positive trends. I think it's an execution at this point. You can point to the players and coaches for that though
-
Brave man. They're gonna come for you. I'll be thinking of you
-
Yeah, which is why I noted perimeter. He can try against 4s in the league, and might succeed in some battles due to not a huge size disparity. But it's not an ideal situation for him to defend those guys.
-
I have honestly been impressed with CJs defense as the year has gone on. Could be a matter of competition we're facing vs early on when they played top teams. I personally think his perimeter defense has improved, Minnesota stood out to me in particular. UMD I thought he was decent. Considering he was pretty slow there early, any progress is good

With Walker, I think he won't be relied upon as much as he has to provide quality minutes at the 5. To your question on more bigger lineups, I think it's just about availability. Andre has been decent at times this year, but given that he's the only other center option on the roster and he's gotten 11 MPG since Wilhelm went down, walker is lifting a lot there. I don't think that's a good sign for Andre personally. And he's very foul prone. So if he picks up quick fouls, you're down your second big and you have to run Walker for however long is left. Ideally in the big ten, you'd want Walker to be at about 20-25 and up to not 29 (sitting at about 26 right now during the same time span). I think we're starting to see the after effects of him playing so much as his play has fallen off a bit of late. Having Kieta with Oleg and Wilhelm should provide quality relief. And I think you'll see more "bigger" lineups next year. Whether it be Oleg and kieta or Wilhelm and Walker or some sort of combination of that, I forsee those lineups more often. Oleg from my eyes has a solid jumper in space and Wilhelm can obviously shoot a bit also. With PG, I see it as a opportunity for a transfer to come in and pretty much have a significant shot at starting next year. One thing that has bugged me was the staff early on saying "we don't like taking grad transfers since they're in it for themselves". Kavas first year, second year Kobe, then verge this year. I think grabbing a PG with some time in college left WITH some experience playing would be ideal. If it doesn't with, Quaran can do his thing.
-
I think adding at least one more PG to that mix would benefit the team. If Walker comes back, Andre likely bounces too. He'd be coming off the bench with no path to starting in the near future. Also, don't love Walker at the 4 after watching Nance toast him. Nance is an anomaly at the 5, Walker would routinely see that at the 4. Also, Lloyd isn't really a lead guard, more of a combo. But, to the main point. That's pretty much where I'm at. If they couldn't swallow the pill for football to pay up, they're 100% not doing it for basketball. Plus football could've attracted much better coaches than basketball if they canned Frost (arguably), so the pool will probably be thin with basketball Does this mean I want him back? No. Same stance I had with Frost. I didn't think he deserved to come back and I don't think Fred does either. Financial implications will cause this to stay though. Just the reality. All we can do now is look to next year and the roster. Just my 2c Also, if they move on, I will 100% support that too. I have a few coaches I like to potentially look this way

I think he's been at most of the games, so I imagine he'll be at senior night. -
Some. A lot of the noise is local though.

I don't think I've seen this be shared in here yet also. Good piece by Padilla (think he's a member here)

I'm excited to watch Bryce in the league. I just wish they had a better team around him to maximize him. Ideally, he'd have a natural PG who gets him the ball in his spots and more reliable shooting so he wouldn't have to carry so much. His defense and playmaking are also raw at this point, but I see glimpses of good stuff there. Excited to watch him at the next level. If he lands in the right spot, he can take off

I do wonder if Fred takes the reduced buyout to just get out of a sinking ship. It's an idea that I've floated in my head. Not ENTIRELY out of the question. It would be a clean slate of a roster next year Essentially with 3 starters for sure gone, if not more. Your top 2 PGs are also gone, the third could also be. Trev will probably put out a statement very similar to the Frost one (in a sense of coming straight from him) shortly after they get eliminated in the big ten tourney. Right now, my money is on him being back with a new staff. But I also can see a reduced buyout agreement or just a straight up buyout. It's a decision that could cost the AD for years and years. We'll be hearing about paying off Fred for the next 10 years lol. If there were not financial implications that could cost the department for a long time, this wouldn't be a discussion. I'm still sticking with my gut at this point.
