I hope you don't view me as being contentious or rude in this discussion, as these are all just my opinions and own views - but I feel like you are looking at this too specifically and too "brass tax" (I'm not sure this captures what I'm trying to say)? I think all of these sports and activities need to be viewed much more holistically. For instance, let's put it this way. The town of Aurora, Nebraska and Aurora High School... It doesn't matter if their High School Basketball team is in the black or red via how much it actually costs to run the basketball program versus what they receive in ticket sales and donations (combined with fund-raising). It's all a part of the community and culture of school and town. AAU is never going to provide an alternative for that, especially in the state of Nebraska and similar situations. Now, as I said in earlier posts - I think where you could see AAU start to have a massive impact is in the urban inner-cities, with OPS being a perfect example. I can definitely see a future where, let's say, Omaha Benson says, "we are no longer providing athletics as an option," where others potentially follow. And their athletics are effectively outsourced to community programs/AAU/private programs/whatever you want to call it.

Do you? I am not sure that is even true. They charge money to get into the games. Most coaches I know do a TON of fundraising. It's a major catalyst source of donation (specific to football AND general ed). And would kids or all types be flocking to go to "Westside/Bellevue West/Gretna" of the worlds if they didn't have phenomenal extracurricular activities? A high quality football team at a school is rarely a one-off - it's typically a sign of a very healthy activities and academic culture.

Sounds inefficient. Seems like some cooperation between the private sector and the places who were able to spread out these massive costs of building/gym/weight room/equipment to the public is needed.

I feel like you know the answer to this? And that we're probably not going to see eye to eye on this. Also, in what way does privatizing the sports expand access to these sports? The girl in HS's argument is valid and makes logical sense. And while it's unfortunate some are not able to play due to abilities or available spots, those opportunities would not be there for many others without the public underwriting the costs.

This is kinda where I was interested in this thread giong... What are your thoughts about how schools effectively don't even really care if they have a teacher in the building coaching - and are more concerned if their guy is an AAU coach?

There’s some talk of breaking up the 20 team metro conference. Lots of other teams moving around preparing to be moved up (Ashland).

I don't think we have any reason to worry about Nebraska HS sports or most midwestern places losing high school sports - especially at the Class B to C2 range in this state. There is so much money in those communities, and a town like "Crete" is effectively a private school. You have to have the money, job, house, ability to pay property taxes to live in those communities. Where we, and other midwest type areas, will eventually lose public school sports that move towards clubs will be in the dense urban areas (OPS), and the very small schools (d1-d2 type of towns that just disappear or consolidate).

I just don't think that is going to happen around here for a long time. Sports are still a major, major (and well supported) part of our School culture. This will happen in urban environments in larger cities - but I don't see it happening in the midwest, suburban areas.

Just wanted to get some discussion started and hear some thoughts from all of you regarding Class A and B Boys basketball in Nebraska, specifically conference alignment, AAU Coaches involvement, Transferring/Recruitment, Omaha Public School's failures (keep it to athletics, if you can, although they're related). It's kind of the wild wild west right now, and I feel like some significant changes need to be made to get back to High School Sports being High School Sports, community based, etc... I have some other thoughts, but thought I'd open up discussion to everyone else to see where it goes or if anyone has any interesting thoughts or ideas.

Pretty excited for KO tho - he basically just guaranteed himself like 15ppg on a significantly more efficient run, along with probably an NCAA tourney appearance. Just the way things go with us.

She did. She performed the brain surgery and made it back for the last set. Truly inspiring. But for real Josiah is a great person, mature, tough, athletic. He'd fill a very nice role of a traditional "power forward." I just did not think he was an option after his comments after and reasons for transferring. Sounded like he wanted to be "the dude," at a smaller school.

Using Brandon Ubel as a case study for patience is kind of funny... He was on a team "near bubble" team, then the next year that got a coach fired, then his best season corresponded with a 15-18 record and 10th place finish in conference. Ironically, Wilhelm might be on the same trajectory!
