This is a game that hurts in March. Good comeback, with help from the crowd. Lack of depth continues to hurt us. We peddled uphill so long, and couldn't sub in fresh players. Some unforced turnovers; surprising ones from Theriot to help fuel big Wazzu runs. Nice first half out of Sample.

Nebraska Cornhuskers (4-2) vs Northern Illinois (2-3)

My son was in the front row of the student section, and scored a free $130 Jay Z ticket for being among the first 75 admitted. But, he wouldn't wear the new HHC In Miles We Trust T-shirt I bought him. Could be because he currently, at this life stage, thinks dad is the biggest dork around these parts. But that shirt would have helped us. -
Good card, good perspective, well-stated.

And make free throws. But he looks big-time if he can improve in those two areas. Put me down as still liking Tai.

6'8" Forward Greg Wittington will transfer from Georgetown

Appears to be good news. We just keep upgrading our talent, if everyone can keep some patience and perspective. -
It's time for Brandi to get it going. She has been struggling big time. We don't have other answers at that position, so it would help immensely if we could get her going in the right direction.

Wow, I didn't expect today's events to unfold as they did. Still, I'm not sure this is over. The next 10 days will be interesting. Watch as people parse Eichorst's statement. Watch to see if we have aggressive action with recruiting. Watch to see what the Big 10's punishment will be for Bo's tirade about the refs--will it be more than Cook got? And see if Mr. "I apologize to no one" actually apologizes or at least expresses regret for his conduct beginning at halftime of the Iowa game, and continuing through the post game press conference.

Game Day Essentials: Game #7 vs Northern Illinois

Cip, that is some pretty outstanding attention to detail. -
Norm, this is over. It was over the day Tom Osborne resigned. Today's meltdown didn't affect the decision by HP/SE, but it will affect public opinion about it. Which in the end may make it much less divisive.

Good takes, Row 6. After our first 4, the fall off is dramatic. Havers shows flashes but is just young. She'll be a good player eventually. The others--it looks doubtful.

Would have to think Pitchford, Petteway, Webster, Biggs,Hawkins, Hammond, possibly Smith and Fuller, show a proven recruiter under the circumstances. Considerably better than what we had been sigining, with little time on the job, after years of futility. Better facilities to recruit with but other than that an extremely difficult place in which to recruit. Under the circumstances, it would be hard to envision doing much better. I suppose beating Louisville head to head on Agau. I like what I've seen so far with Miles' recruiting. He's pushing some boulders uphill. Hopefully as things improve here, so will the recruiting. Agree that longterm the jury is still out, but lots to be encouraged about.

Charleston Classic: Success or Failure?
HB replied to icedragon101's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
And to that UMASS team, it was a one possession game in the last minute, and we missed a layup with 23 seconds left which would have cut it to one. All with a very inexperienced and undersized team, with it's lone senior out most of the second half with an injury. So many throw out words like failure, based solely on result, rather than process. -

Right, Ice Dragon. He has built programs from nothing in 4 colleges/universities prior to coming here. Yep, he just doesn't understand scheduling and makes decisions that aren't in the best interest of the program. I guess I'll go with the guy who has an 18 year track record in building programs over the second guessers on here. I'm sure there will be big fallout in a few years over going 1-2 in some tournament early into the second year. No doubt we'll be lamenting that fateful decision for years. -
We have such a long way to go. Nowhere near the 10th rated team in the country right now. Interior defense was a problem as well, Row 6. Despite her scoring numbers, Hooper was not herself today. Contact really bothered her. She still is best at spot up shooting; a ways to go yet putting it on the floor and taking it to the hoop. Sample struggled, and Connie got in her grill with a lot of vigor--that has hardly ever happened. Finally, we had issues at the line. Cady is our best overall player right now, and she gave great effort once again. Theriot had some nice looks on offense. When she gets the ball in the right spot, she's money. Teara gave us to some energy in the second half and made some plays.

Wow, Row 6, I hadn't noticed that (KSU). But that's why the women's board is so good to check out frequently. I saw that Katya Leick is starting for K-State, with 16 and 25 minutes the past 2 games. Brianna Craig didn't play in the UTEP blowout--don't know if it was injury or coach's decision. The next game she played 34 minutes off the bench. Love to see K-State lose, because they are K-State, and because of what I have seen first-hand with Patterson over the years.

UNO beats Ark.-Pine Bluff 76-48. With regard to UNO: Interesting to see Mikaela Shaw starting for UNO and averaging over 30 minutes a game as a freshman. Row 6 and I posted following the All-Star game this summer that we thought Shaw was the best player on the floor that night. Personally I struggle to see how Ramacieri gets a scholarship over Shaw, but I am admittedly an amateur. Randy Edwards has done some nice things with his club players, even though his team doesn't get the attention of the Cornhusker Shooting Stars.

Hey,this is no time for perspective! Instead, the sky is falling, even though another way to look at it is a 6 point loss at a neutral site to a veteran, talented team, with a bunch of inexperienced youngsters is actually sign of progress. But no, it's better to not give UMass credit, and announce that the coaching sucked, a terrible decision was made to not re-recruit some dude named Fahro, and that we really struck out by not getting all those great players that were available in April last year. I apologize for having expectations and believing we should do better than three stops in an entire half against an NIT caliber team that we will see 18 times in the Big 10. I refuse to do what we've done the last ten years - give ourselves credit for moral victories based on "good teams we played." I also think if we had Fahro, we'd be close to an NCAA Tournament team this year. Miles decided we didn't want him, and took Serg in his place. He wasn't going to recruit two "marginal" Bigs in the same class that late in the game. He chose Serg. Sure, we had one other scholly open, but he's not going to clog them on two "projects." He chose the wrong one - it happens. Nobody hits 100%. But I think its relevant for me to bring this up for the first time ever (I NEVER have) the day we play the guy and he lights us up. Correct me if I'm wrong on that being relevant or not. Couldn't disagree with you more. And to be this blatantly critical of new coach, and claim to be a big fan of said coach, seems really weird.

Well, without much time, because I have to go drink, we had two close games (even with a 13 point loss, UAB was close until the final minutes, and we led by 6 in the second half) on the road against good teams, with an extremely inexperienced team. We didn't lose at home to Maryland Baltimore-County or whoever the hell it was. But yeah, the defense sucked. Not sure it wasn't because anyone was not trying ("effort"), but lots of new guys who haven't done it much against any competition at this level, don't know what and how to do it. Just a perspective of who we played, when we played them. I would say Wake Forest and Oregan at home Doc's last year was a more perplexing and bad "effort" than this. This is going to take awhile, and it seems everyone is living in the moment (they sure did after beating 3 lame teams at home) and is overly harsh.
-
Norm, I agree with you 95% of the time. But not here. No doubt Miles does not deserve criticism recruiting wise just yet. However, I have not seen signs that he can recruit and sign any better players than Doc did. But it is still early. But his ability to put a displined team on the court based on the last two games, is lacking. The team chemistry and defense (or lack thereof) is horrible, and THAT is all on him. Players will do in games what you let them get away with in practice. While I attended many of Doc's practices, I have not attended any of Miles. He may be a tough coach during practices but if he is, it is not translating to good shot selection, rebounding and defense. Good lord, just because a problem is easily identified, if the solution doesn't immediately happen, it doesn't mean someone failed. This stuff takes awhile. It isn't "all on him"; one can't be a friggin' miracle worker. You can't just snap your fingers and make someone cohesive in the first road trip of the year. These guys have never played together. Most of them have played very little D1 basketball. I'm sure he would have loved a roster filled with talented, experienced returning players. But he didn't. He had to scramble to get transfers and a couple of other warm bodies to tide us over until he could get recruiting going. So yeah, guess what, after 15 years of failure, we will have some hiccups getting things changed. For me, I would have been pleasantly surprised, if not shocked, if we didn't have "good shot selection, rebounding, or defense" at this point, as well as a cohesive group that has good chemistry and plays well together. For cryin' out loud, most of these guys are transfers and Jucos--yeah, there usually is some baggage there. One or two assimilate better than 4.
