Huskers Shoot for First Big Ten Win Over Defending Champ Spartans

The No. 19 Nebraska women’s basketball team opens a two-game Big Ten road trip when the Huskers travel to East Lansing to take on Michigan State Thursday night.

Tip-off between the defending Big Ten Tournament champion Huskers and the defending Big Ten co-champion Spartans is set for 7:30 p.m.

Both the Huskers and Spartans are hungry for a Big Ten win after battling injuries and illness in the early portion of Big Ten Conference play. The Huskers did welcome the return of freshman guard Natalie Romeo to the court, after she missed NU’s previous eight games with a foot injury. Junior center Anya Kalenta also was cleared to play against Maryland. She has missed the last seven games with a foot injury.

Michigan State slipped to 0-3 in Big Ten play with a 74-65 loss at in-state rival Michigan on Sunday, following a 70-51 road loss at Indiana on New Year’s Eve. The Spartans dropped their Big Ten home opener with a 61-57 setback to Northwestern on Dec. 28.

The Spartans have competed with just eight healthy players for the last two weeks, having been stung by major knee injuries to Branndais Agee and Madison Williams in the offseason. Recently, senior center Jasmine Hines has struggled to overcome concussion symptoms.

As a team, Michigan State has averaged 70.9 points while surrendering 61.9 points per contest on the year, but the Spartans have managed just 57.7 points per game through their first three Big Ten contests. Big Ten opponents have averaged 68.3 points per game and have produced a plus-5.7 turnover margin. On the year, MSU carries a plus-9.3 rebound margin, but have managed just a 40.0-39.7 edge on the glass in league play. The Spartans are also shooting just 35.6 percent from floor through three Big Ten contests.

Nebraska leads the short all time series with Michigan State 3-2.

    Probable Starters:

    Nebraska Cornhuskers

    3 - Hailie Sample - 6-1 - Sr. - F - 6.8 ppg

    23 - Emily Cady - 6-2 - Sr. - F - 13.6

    1 - Tear’a Laudermill - 5-9 - Sr. - G - 12.5

    13 - Brandi Jeffery - 5-7 - Sr. - G - 7.9

    33 - Rachel Theriot - 6-0 - Jr. - G - 17.8

    Michigan State Spartans

    23 - Aerial Powers - 6-0 - So. - F - 19.3 ppg

    52 - Becca Mills - 6-4 - Sr. - F - 10.2

    1 - Tori Jankoska - 5-8 - So. - G - 18.2

    14 - Anna Morrissey - 5-10 - Sr. - G - 5.6

    21 - Jasmine Lumpkin - 6-0 - Fr. - G/F - 5.9

Rachel Theriot ranks No. 2 in the nation and the Big Ten with her .957 free throw percentage (45-47). Theriot has made 19 consecutive free throws dating back to the first half of the win over Northern Colorado.

Emily Cady is the Big Ten Conference’s active rebound leader with 910 in her career. Senior teammate Hailie Sample ranks third in the conference with 579 career boards.

Emily Cady’s 1,231 career points rank No. 17 in Husker history. She needs 12 points to catch Brooke Schwartz in 16th.

Brandi Jeffery’s most impressive gains have come on the glass, where she ranks second among the Huskers and and tied for 12th in the Big Ten with 7.0 rebounds per game.

Hailie Sample leads the Huskers in field goal percentage (.600) through 13 games and ranks 18th in Big Ten rebounding (6.5 rpg).

Missed MSU three!  And a foul!  Huskers get free throws with 5 seconds left!

    Sample at the line...

    First shot is IN!  70-67.

Second shot is GOOD! 71-67... and time is UP!  Huskers win!

    What a game!

Great team win. Enjoy watching these girls play some hoops.

Wish I could watch these seniors play another four years for the Huskers. And braids too of course.

Happy birthday to the birthday girls too!

Oh, and since Allie didn't decide to drop 17 again on these guys I'm going to humbly request she do so in the next game.

And should say Emily Cady repeatedly...over and over again. So proud.

Had we had this many players available at the Minnesota game we would have won that one too. Thought this may have been the most complete game we've played this year. Had a little loll in the second half, but really looked good both offensively and defensively.  Really impressed how easily we scored in the lane against their zone. Seniors stepped up big time and their experience showed. Emily and Brandi were both fantastic. Natalie Romeo with 8 big points off the bench.

My biggest disappointment was hoping to watch this after the men's game without knowing the score when I got home from PBA. But just so happened they had to turn up the volume for the PA announcer when he announced the final score during the men's game! It did get one of the biggest cheers tonight though at PBA.

That math degree from Michigan St must be a breeze to achieve after looking at the reported 4652 in attendance!

Looked more like 465 and 100 of them were Allie Haver's family and friends!

Big confidence boost for this team and coaches. That chest bump between Emily and Rachel after that lay-up and one was a thing of beauty! Brandi continues to shine! Tee struggled with her shot tonight and winds up with 7 points.

12 points off the bench tonight to none for MSU!

I'll get the round 4 Pick-em' results posted some time tomorrow.

Tee has to find her shot.  We will struggle to win with her going 2-14.  The ball is coming off her hand in bad shape.   Supinating vs. pronating, if that brings back any memories from basketball camp.

Our lack of post size continues to be a problem at times, although we only lost the offensive rebounding category by 2.  I just can't imagine how good we would be if we had gotten Chartrice White, who had 22 last night in an Illini win over a good Iowa team.

I think Tee is 8-50 in 3 conf. games I think about 5 of the 8 are layups.  Problem is not only the slump but she is a high volume shooter.  She is really pressing right now and taking some bad shots which is compounding the problem.

We really need her to get back on track.  When she is efficient and scoring we are WAY better.

Maybe I'm nuts.... but.....watching the game....at times, I thought we seemed to lack a lot of confidence.

The losses beforehand, may have put a little doubt in their heads.  Never saw many smiles until late, then Cady got the long pass an scored.  But we were tied or behind most of the game too, so they had to stay focus all the game long.

Teams are focusing their defense on Rachel....hold her down and we have trouble getting enough scoring from the rest of the team. We need 3 shooting good for maybe 15 pts/game..... and post help ...on the boards (inside scoring and rebounding). You know .....the things Hopper where was so good. :)

Talk about gutting out a win....wow ....right to the end. Good stuff girls ! We took that one away from Mich St

Let's see - we had Sample with 13, Brandi with 10, and got 12 from the bench.  That makes a HUGE difference.  Takes some of the scoring pressure off Theriot in the second half.  She still played 40 minutes, but others were able to score.  And Cady looked pissed toward the end of the game, after the gal shoved her in the back and she face planted on the floor.  A pissed off Em tends to play a bit tougher in my opinion.

Have ever seen such a weird delivery on a shot?

Great win - coming back from a couple of 6-point deficits late.  As an earlier poster mentioned, the last 2 games could have really lowered their confidence, but they made some great plays at the end.

I was really surprised Cady didn't get called for a foul on the 3-pointer by MSU.  Even though the refs seemed to let a lot of shoving go throughout the game, there seemed to be several 'home-cooking' calls sprinkled in.

have to go back to the replay, but, don't think suzy merchant had much too much to gripe about. imo, her players got away with a lot underneath the basket. i saw close to half a dozen times that huskers got mugged underneath. yep, think msu got away with their share.

There were a couple of obvious flops by MSU that were called as fouls on us.  Hard to tell if our players that hit the floor were flopping or not, because fouls were rarely called and, therefore, there was no close-up replay by BTN.

From what I can see of her shot she is square with the bucket and in her motion ball comes across her body.

Tea's shot looks different than last year when she was shooting it well. She's throwing the ball across over her shoulder a little I think and 'throwing' vs. 'shooting'. The PSU game is still up on ESPN3...tried to get a good screenshot but not practical on this machine ...just wasn't clear. But that's what's been bugging me about her shot this season.

She gets that stroke back and sky's the limit for her professionally.

imo, tea getting her shot back could very well mean the difference between an ok season and a good season. would be a huge deal to take some pressure off rachel. no secret---if i was an opposing team, right now i do everything to limit rachel (which they seem to be doing).
