Huskers Ready for Big Ten Battle With Badgers

The Nebraska women’s basketball team returns home for the third and final time in the month of January to take on Wisconsin Wednesday. Tip-off between the Big Red and the Badgers is set for 7 p.m.

Nebraska is coming off its most impressive week of the year with back-to-back road wins at then-Big Ten co-leader Purdue and Michigan. Jessica Shepard made history at Michigan by tying her own school record with 35 points, while setting a career-high with 20 rebounds to become the first Husker ever to produce a 30-point, 20-rebound game.

During Nebraska’s current five-game Big Ten winning streak, freshman forward Jessica Shepard is averaging 27.4 points and 12.6 rebounds. Natalie Romeo has also stepped up her production, averaging 17.4 points, in nearly 38 minutes per game. Romeo has hit 4.0 threes per game and shot 43.5 percent from long range. Allie Havers also has played bigger for the Big Red, averaging 8.8 points, 6.4 rebounds.

Wisconsin comes to Lincoln for a Wednesday night clash with the Cornhuskers carrying a 6-12 record that includes a 2-6 Big Ten mark. For the season, Wisconsin is 1-6 in true road games and has not scored more than 67 points in any of its eight games away from the Kohl Center.

Nicole Bauman has been a difference-maker for the Badgers this season. She ranks among Big Ten leaders with 16.2 points per game, Dakota Whyte has added 12.7 points and a team-best 3.9 assists Michala Johnson has added 10.3 points and 6.2 rebounds, Avyanna Young has pitched in 7.8 points and a team-best 6.4 rebounds per game. Cayla McMorris, has contributed 8.4 points.

Nebraska is 7-0 against Wisconsin as Big Ten foes.

Nebraska needs one win to match the fourth-longest conference winning streak in school history.

Jessica Shepard earned her eighth Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Week award on Jan. 25, tying the Big Ten record for most awards in a season by a single player.

Jessica Shepard needs three points to become just the seventh Husker in history to score 400 points as a freshman. She needs 27 points to catch Kelsey Griffin at No. 5 on NU’s freshman list.

With eight double-doubles, Jessica Shepard needs one more to match the Nebraska freshman record of nine.

Natalie Romeo crossed the 500-point career scoring mark in the win at Michigan. Her next assist will be the 100th of her career.

Natalie Romeo’s next three-pointer will be her 62nd  and move her into a tie for 10th on Nebraska’s single-season three-point made list with Tee Laudermill.

Natalie Romeo needs six threes to match a pair of 67 three-point seasons by Jordan Hooper in eighth on Nebraska’s season chart.

Allie Havers scored the 400th point and grabbed the 300th rebound of her career in Sunday’s win at Michigan.

Kyndal Clark leads Nebraska with 28 steals this season and her next steal will be the 200th of her collegiate career.

It would appear we might have the upper hand against Wisconsin, but it is a B1G conference game and we must be up and ready. If not, it could well end up being a long struggle Wed. We just can't drop this one. There too much to loose, let alone the game. Connie's had us ready for the games, down this mid season stretch.

We all would like to see more minutes for Maddie, and others. Wouldn't be surprised to see RT sit, and heal up. We'll see. If she doesn't play it will probably be Jazz at the point again.

Wisky won't give up and throw in the towel, so we have to be prepared. They aren't a high scoring team, especially away. They say they'll try to run up and down court on us.... a strategy to wear out our bigs.  Not so sure they have enough depth to keep it up anyway.

It's pretty apparent from Coach Kelsey comments they intend to bombard Jess. Burns, Allie and Anya may be busy getting open for baskets.  It would be great, as always, if our guards can score frequently and take a little pressure off our bigs.

They have an experienced starters. And a couple of good scorers in Bauman and Whyte, Both are Srs, with experience. Bauman is their team leader.

Nat and KC will be busy and in their face most of the game. Hold them to 20pts total or less combined,  would be a success. They have two or three other scorers, but not real consistent. Also have some decent rebounders.

We will need lots of hard defensive work, and importantly, for 4 full quarters. We've become much more smooth and efficient offensively. Just hope we continue and improve on both ends of the floor.

It would be nice if the Huskers could get a comfortable lead and sit the starters a spell. The February grind is just around the corner and with this young team every chance they get to rest the players averaging big minutes will help in the long run.

Couple things to take note against the Badgers,

Watch just how well Natalie is using her screens to get open for her three point shot. She’s really getting good at creating space between her and the defender whether it be with the ball in her hand or coming off the screen receiving the pass. It’s fun to watch.

The game is starting to slow down for Jasmine. She’s not turning the ball over and is starting to play more within the offense. It’s why she got a lot of minutes against Michigan and if Rachel can’t go it’s why she’ll most likely get the start and a lot of time on the court against Bucky.

The Huskers are still a little erratic on turnovers, need to get that number under 12 or lower consistently, 13 against Michigan is a good start.

Allie could very well end up having double digits in rebounds.

man, hard to believe huskers will be halfway through the conference season after the wisconsin game. these are the games you need to win to help stay in that upper echelon that is fighting for a very good seed for the BTT. expect nothing less than a hard fought battle from the badgers, but, gotta win this one.
