Huskers Continue Home Stand with Lady Eagles

The Nebraska women’s basketball team will play the third game of its season-opening home stand when the Huskers play host to North Carolina Central on Saturday afternoon at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Tip-off between the Huskers and the Lady Eagles is set for 2 p.m

Jessica Shepard continued her impressive start to open the season. The 6-4 forward poured in 27 points while adding 10 rebounds in Monday night’s win over North Florida. Shepard became the first Husker freshman in history to score 20 or more points in the first two games of her career, and the first freshman to notch back-to-back doubles to open a career.

Shepard needs just 10 points and three rebounds against North Carolina Central to produce the best three-game start in school history in points and rebounds.

Coach Vanessa Taylor brings her fourth North Carolina Central squad to Lincoln to face the Huskers for the first time in school history on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Eagles are coming off a 57-48 season-opening loss to the Fighting Camels of Campbell U. North Carolina Central went 7-22 last season, including a 5-11 mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). The Lady Eagles return their second-leading scorer from a year ago, Morgan Jones.

Nebraska will face North Carolina Central for the first time in school history. Odds makers have the Huskers as a 49-1/2 point favorite.

Probable Starters:

Nebraska Cornhuskers

43 - Rachel Blackburn - 6-3 - Fr. - F - 5.0 ppg
32 - Jessica Shepard - 6-4 - Fr. - F - 25.5 ppg, 11.5 rpg
4 - Kyndal Clark - 5-7 - RSr. - G - 5.0
5 - Natalie Romeo - 5-7 - So. - G - 18.5
33 - Rachel Theriot - 6-0 - Sr. - G - 7.0

North Carolina Central Lady Eagles

25 - Tisha Dixon - 5-11 - Sr. - F - 14.0 ppg
35 - Kierona Morton - 6-1 - So. - F - 0.0
4 - Kristin Askew - 5-6 - Sr. - G - 4.0
10 - Monique Whaley-Briggs - 5-8 - Jr. - G - 2.0
23 - Morgan Jones - 5-9 - Jr. - G - 8.0

Jessica Shepard leads the nation with two double-doubles. She also ranks among the top 20 players in the nation in scoring at 25.5 points per game.

Jessica Shepard’s 25.5 points per game rank third nationally among Division I freshmen

Natalie Romeo’s career-high 30-point effort against Arkansas Pine Bluff marked the highest point total by a Husker in an opener in school history.

Nebraska’s most experienced player, Rachel Theriot will be making her 85th start in a Husker uniform.

Rachel Blackburn produced the best game of her young career with 8 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists in the win over North Florida.

Nebraska set a season ticket sales record with 4,011 season tickets sold as of Nov. 18, 2015. It marks the first time in school history the Huskers have sold 4,000 season tickets. An increase of 109 tickets over last year’s previous record high of 3,902.

Doesn't appear North Carolina Central has lots of size, so we'll probably be in the "feed the post" mode.

Hope we pick up the level of the defense, and work to rain in the 3's by our outside game.

Optimistically, we should get an opportunity to clean the bench again...love the fact they all get floor time.....has to help a ton in the long run. Could also be part of the reason we're "gelling" so well. Everyone is getting to play. Makes for a happy squad.

i noticed they have two 6'4" posts listed on roster. when i checked their stats, one isn't even listed and the other (rs/junior?) played only 12 minutes in their loss the other night. after that, redsteve is right---they are pretty small.

The freshman, at times, looked like rookie freshmen today. Just out of sync. Jess was fouled a lot, but as said the lid seemed to be on the basket. The whole team looked not so focused early. Kind of going too fast. Second half has better.  I always liked the word discombobulated....or what ever

Good passing in the paint on many occasions. But we could have scored 20 more points...but it just wouldn't go down early. The three shooting in general was better. Many hit them today.  Maybe 4 or 5 blocked shots ?

Havers and Kalenta both had very good defensive games..they have picked up the defense this year. They both may of had 10 rebounds..haven't seen the stat sheet yet.  Romeo was a pest on defense. Both Rachels had good games. 43 to many fouls. but made up for it with a good solid overall game.

Hope they have it out of their system.....need to be focused from here on out.  But 88 points in a sometimes sloppy game...wow

Chili, cinnamon rolls, tasty beverage, ready to go!

Love the HuskersNside broadcasts with Matt and Jeff.

Saw Washington walking in with the team, didn't look to be seriously injured.

Matt & Jeff Are a lot of fun to listen to - They get so Excited!  :)

Had there not been a lid on the bucket the first quarter we would have had another 90+ game. Really diggin how Nat is playing so far. Having a hard time watching others when she's playing so hard and hustling the way she is on both ends of the court! Also good to see RB43 keep playing hard even with 4 fouls.

JessS with a double double for the third straight game. Looks like there could be a lot of freshmen records come down this year. She's got to do a better job at the charity stripe though or it's going to be hack-a-shaq before she can put up the shot.

We looked inconsistent at times in the first and third quarters with some crazy turnovers. Looked as if we were playing too fast on some occasions. I still wish we'd throw a zone defense in every once and a while. Still averaging 91.6 points per game is where we need to be, hope that continues especially next Saturday.

Nice crowd this afternoon, I swear old Colorado head coach Ceal Berry was in attendance this afternoon.

It looks like Kyndal's knee is bothering her a bit. She was in a full knee brace as to just the pull over sleeve. I also noticed that most of the knee sleeve's were gone on most of the kids.

We had some spells yesterday where we certainly didn't look good. The fact that we still put up 88 points is astonishing to me. So many missed layups, and a few 3 pointers that wiggled out. Probably should have had at least 20 more points, not counting the missed free throws. I also thought we seemed really rushed - maybe we were pushing things on purpose thinking ahead to UConn?

I thought Havers and Kalenta brought a lot yesterday. So happy Anya is getting some minutes and doing good things. Natalie will break that single game 3 point record at some point this year. I was very happy Esther made the shot at the end of the game.

Is it just me, or does Natalie look faster this year? I also noticed Theriot seemed a bit more aggressive on defense.

As far as being rushed - if the girls can get a little more in sync, watch out!
