University of Minnesota head women's basketball coach Marlene Stollings today announced the addition of 25-year coaching veteran Gail Striegler to her coaching staff. Striegler spent the previous seven years establishing herself as the winningest head coach in Long Island University Brooklyn women's basketball history.

What the Minnesota write up fails to mention was that she was fired from Long Island U this past season. Her record at Long Island U was 96-115.

Last season's NCAA RPI for this season's non-conference opponents (Minnesota's RPI was 44):

HOME GAMES
315-Wofford
294-NJIT
245-Towson
185-Memphis
180-North Dakota
110-New Mexico
97-Maine

ROAD GAMES
290-Kent State
151-Auburn
72-Stetson
15-Duke

uffda---banham (if she comes back healthy) and wagner should be enough to carry them through that schedule, except for Duke---maybe auburn will be interesting. gophers will have to do a lot of damage in the BT if they are looking at even a chance at ncaa's.

what a difference a season can make. with AZB and a healthy banham, along with wagner, minnesota was looking at a special season. now, i would group them in the bottom third of the league and will not expect them to make tourney.

Northern Illinois' center Annalese Lamke transfers to Minnesota.

The Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School graduate went to bed Tuesday night with her basketball future stuck in neutral at Northern Illinois University and without a clue of what was going to happen in a matter of hours.

Lamke, a 6-foot-3 center, woke up Wednesday to learn of her release by the Huskies between 7:30 and 8 a.m. and accepted a scholarship offer from the University of Minnesota that was finalized just about 12 hours later

Rachel Banham planning record breaking return

Rachel Banham wants not just to break Lindsay Whalen's all-time scoring record at the University of Minnesota, she wants to put it where nobody will be able to reach it for a long, long time.

"I want to destroy the record," the Gophers senior guard said this week.

She showed enough progress last month to be cleared by doctors to start participating in no-contact drills. Banham is expected to be ready to play in the Nov. 13 opener against Wofford at Williams Arena.

i'd be a bit surprised if she doesn't break the record three quarters of the way through the ooc---if not a little sooner. that will allow her to add quite a bit to that record total.

"The main challenge of taking this route to a Division I school is that even if you are a Division I calibre player, many schools will not consider players who have already started their university degree at another school because it can reduce their eligible playing years. The other main factor that could completely exclude this possibility is where players are paid for playing with a professional or semi-professional side during their time at an Australian university. Doing so would immediately void a player’s amateur status and disqualify the player from gaining eligibility with any NCAA school. Luckily for Edwards, she had not been paid by the Waves so the door to securing a U.S. College scholarship was still open."

anyone know if she will have eligibility reduced?---(per the first line)
