Scouting the Syracuse Orange (21-9) our first round opponent and to get everyone somewhat up to date with our next opponent. The Orange come into the tourney as an 8 seed. They’ve played a pretty tough schedule and faced some quality teams in so doing. They aren't exactly a tall team but are pretty athletic. They averaged 69.5 points per game while giving up 60.4.

They shoot just under 37% from the field and 28% from behind the arc. They grab 41 rebounds per game and commit just over 14 turnovers per game. They play 8 players with the starters averaging just under 30 minutes a game. From what I can gather they play a match up zone and like to trap. Their bench averages 16.6 points per game.

This will be the first time the Huskers and Orange have met.

The Orange start 3 sophomores and 2 juniors, and are coached by Quentin Hillsman in his 9th year. This is the 4 time under his guidance that they have made the NCAA tourney.

The Starters:

5’7 - so. - Alexis Peterson 15. 7 ppg  -  All ACC second team

5’11 - jr. - Brianna Butler 13.3 ppg - the  primary 3 point shooter hitting 88 of  308 - 29%

6-4 - so. - Bria Day 10.5 ppg 10.6 rebounds

5-8 - jr. - Cornelia Fondren 7.4 ppg 5.5 rpg

6’  - so. - Isabelle Slim 6.6 ppg

6' - jr. - Taylor Ford 6.6 ppg off the bench

5’6 - sr. - Diamond Henderson 9.8 ppg - usually the first off the bench but unfortunately is out with a tore ACL she suffered at the end of Febr.

6-4 - so. - Briana Day - 10 minutes a game 1.2 ppg

6-6 - so. - Michelle Van Dyke - played in 3 games all year.

The Huskers had 3 common opponents this past year with Syracuse.

Syracuse 61 - Penn St 39  played @ Syracuse in early December

Michigan St 89 - Syracuse 76  -  Holiday tournament, played right before Christmas

#16 Duke 74 - Syracuse 72   played @ Duke the second week of January

Other notable games:

#3 South Carolina 69 – Syracuse 58  - Holiday tourney

#5 Baylor 74 - Syracuse 72  - Holiday tourney

#2 Notre Dame 85 - Syracuse 74  - played @ Syracuse

#8 Louisville 78 - Syracuse 58 - played @ Louisville

#7 Florida St 62 - Syracuse 52  - played @ FSU

Syracuse 61 - #15 North Carolina 56 - played @ Syracuse

From WAER

"It’s big for the program," junior guard Brianna Butler said on returning to the NCAA Tournament. "It’s big for the school and big for our team."

But when that matchup was announced, the response was overwhelmingly subdued at the watch party inside the Carmelo K. Anthony Center.  The players and coaches didn't react for a few seconds until Briana Day called out, "That's us", which prompted a calm round of applause.

It will be a tough game. Syracuse has played a pretty good schedule. They have 3 players that average approx. 11 to 16 pts / game, so it will take big defense from us. But they don't seem to be very deep.

Meanwhile we will need quite a bit better than 30% shooting if we're proceed in the NCAAs...but it's very possible for the girls !

Thanks for the scouting report. They have clearly played a very tough schedule. You have to like our experience advantage over them. The outcome of the game will most likely boiling down to shooting percentage. I like our chances if we can shoot in the 45 - 50 percentile.

Syracuse women's basketball team goes to school on Nebraska in preparation for first NCAA game

In the interim between seeing the selection announced on television and walking into an interview room, Hillsman was hammering away at the internet for a quick complement to the general knowledge he already had about the foe.

"Nebraska is a good team. They rebound the ball. They shoot the ball decent behind the arc. They make about five threes a game. So we've got a tough game ahead of us. But we're excited we're going to be playing,''

"I know they're a pretty good team. We're pretty good too. So I think it will be a good game,'' said Orange center Briana Day. "We have some really great coaches. So I don't think (playing a new opponent) is going to be that bad at all for us. We'll be fine.''
