Huskers take on Iowa in quarterfinals

Natalie Romeo tied a school record with seven three-pointers on her way to a career-high 26 points to lead seventh-seeded Nebraska to an 86-71 pounding of 10th-seeded Illinois in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament at Sears Centre Arena on Thursday night.  With the victory, Nebraska advanced to Friday's Big Ten quarterfinal game against second-seeded Iowa.

Tip-off between the Huskers and No. 14 Hawkeyes for the third time this season is set for 6 p.m.

Nebraska controlled the game from start to finish to complete the sweep of Illinois, building a 28-point lead with 8:21 left in the game. Every Husker in Nebraska's special 1988 throwback uniforms competed and contributed in the Husker win, which was their fourth straight in the Big Ten Tournament. Nebraska improved to 8-2 in the tournament in four seasons in the conference.

Iowa earned a double-bye in the inaugural 14-team format. The Hawkeyes will open play Friday at 6 p.m. facing the seventh-seed Nebraska. The winner will play at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Saturday in the semifinals, while the championship game is set for Sunday at 6 p.m.

Nebraska leads the all-time series with Iowa, 12-9, including an 8-2 record as Big Ten Conference foes.

GAME NOTES:

“We didn’t like walking off the court, having confetti hitting us in the face that wasn’t for us,’’ sophomore Ally Disterhoft said. “That definitely adds fuel to the fire, because we felt we let an opportunity get away. We’re looking for redemption.’’

Iowa won’t have to look far to find it. Seventh-seeded Nebraska, the team that has knocked the Hawkeyes out of the tourney the past three years, is Iowa’s opponent in a 6 p.m. game at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

Senior Samantha Logic said the Hawkeyes’ run to the championship game a year ago can benefit Iowa now.

“We won three games in four days to get that far last year and this time with the byes, we only have to play three in three days so we know we can get that done,’’ Logic said. “We’ll be ready mentally and physically for what lies ahead.’’

Our having played a game yesterday, and Iowa didn't play at all, isn't in our favor.  Will we have anough gas in the tank to play another tough game the next day? But we were able to give the starters some rest yesterday.

If we can keep up the shooting percentage, even near 40-45% that may well keep us in the game. Can't go back to the 30% deal. We're hot right now at the right time.....can we continue?

I imagine Iowa is aware of what Romeo did last night, and will try to guard her tight....we may need to pick up scoring from the other girls.

We've played them twice, so the game plan should be in place. It'l be a tough one...

Which poison does Iowa want to pick? Romeo then does that leave T open? do they pick T and leave Romeo open and then you have Cady on the inside against Doolittle, and then you have Brandi at the mid range game. And Iowa doesn't play great D.

We had 24 turnovers against Illinois last night. That won't cut it in tonight's game. Got to take care of the ball and make our passes more crisp than they were at times last night. Got to keep our focus for the full 40 minutes, and have to keep Hailie out of foul trouble. Shoot and score the ball at a high percentage and rebound the ball and get a hand in the face of the 3 point shooter at all times.

imagine the score if huskers cut those turnovers in half.

i'm not so sure playing a second game really hurts you too much. i believe where you start to see it is in any following games.

been playing a long time now. pretty well conditioned to play two nights in a row. jmo.

Got to defend a little better in the paint. Can't believe either of Natalie's offensive charges. Got to come out make shots and rebound.

I tell you they're a bunch of thugs.

Yeah I don't know which is worse Iowa or Illinois.
