How many volleyball players blow out their ACLs compared to basketball players?

That's not a rhetorical question.  I honestly don't know the answer.

At first blush, my initial reaction would be to say I don't think this is a good idea.  I don't think there's anything to be gained and much to be lost.

I wonder what Jess's vertical leaping ability is like, though.  Maybe volleyball would be good for working on that.

ACL tears are prevalent in women's athletics.  Lots of them in basketball.  Not sure if there are any studies comparing volleyball and basketball.  Just guessing but I would think there are more in basketball.  In any event, I like the idea of being a high school kid for a while longer.  Enjoy it while you can.  Injury could happen just as easily playing pickup hoops during the fall.  Jess got plenty of hoops experience this summer playing on the junior national team; a little break won't hurt her.

Plenty of good things can come from volleyball as well.  Like Norm mentioned it should help with her vertical jump.  It also will help with her communication as well as "court" awareness abilities.  Being able to space yourself, get in the right spot at the right time, etc will only benefit her going forward.

I had heard a few weeks before school started at Fremont that she was debating between going out for volleyball or softball but wasn't exactly sure if she would go through with it. Looks like volleyball won out. Good for her! You only live once! Some of the fondest memories can be made from your high school days from the different sports in which you participate. And when you get older reminising some good memories from your high school days are always really fun to look back on. Especially at reunions.

I think shoulders are the most common (chronic) injury in volleyball requiring surgery. Knees not such an issue because players are not jumping in traffic.

I'd love to see her play in a volleyball match.

Just a little heads up on Jessica's kid sister. Not even having played a high school game yet and maybe a little bit for now anyway, riding the coattails of big sister.

Sam Shepard 18' begins her freshman year at Fremont. She's already receiving interest from Creighton, Illinois, Michigan and Nebraska.

So in taking a page from Creighton and Iowa fans who like to let you know on their school being the first to notice new talent, not this one.

"Nebraska was in on her first! "
