Row6Seat10 Posted December 31, 2013 Report Posted December 31, 2013 Johnny Orr, the fist-pumping basketball coach who led Michigan to the national title game and Iowa State into national prominence, has died. He was 86. His death was confirmed Tuesday by Iowa State. http://www.windstream.net/news/read/category/Top%20News/article/ap-iowa_state_michigan_coach_johnny_orr_die-ap Quote
49r Posted December 31, 2013 Report Posted December 31, 2013 No word on the cause of death. Although, at 86 it could be just "old age". RIP, Johnny. Always entertaining and always one of the most frustrating coaches to play against. Quote
Huskerpapa Posted December 31, 2013 Report Posted December 31, 2013 RIP Coach Orr...and thank you for your great efforts to name our student section in the day! Quote
HB Posted January 1, 2014 Report Posted January 1, 2014 A guy who had a twinkle in his eye. You don't see that much anymore. Quote
Silverbacked1 Posted January 2, 2014 Report Posted January 2, 2014 A guy back when you could respect the other team, becuase both teams played hard and then shook hands after, as did the fans. Quote
Norm Peterson Posted January 2, 2014 Report Posted January 2, 2014 I remember one year ISU made the NCAA tourney field and Dick Vitale had made some comments prior to selection Sunday saying they shouldn't make it because their schedule wasn't good enough, etc. Well, after ISU makes the field, Dick Vitale is interviewing Orr and a couple of his Cyclone players and Johnny just went off on Vitale. It was CLASSIC. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SfWN1AleyI hhcmatt 1 Quote
Norm Peterson Posted January 3, 2014 Report Posted January 3, 2014 The thread title "Johnny Orr dead at 86" reminds me of this old Dana Carvey, SNL sketch ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkhwiuRbOEE Quote
49r Posted January 3, 2014 Report Posted January 3, 2014 It was just a sad rip-off of the original, Norm: Quote
