Norm Peterson Posted October 10, 2013 Report Posted October 10, 2013 I saw a discussion over on a football board about whether Taylor Martinez would be able to gain an extra year of eligibility under the NCAA hardship rules. Most everyone was saying he would not be able to get a 6th year because he redshirted his first season for reasons other than injury. But then someone posted the (actual?) rule language, which apparently reads as follows: NCAA Bylaw 14.2.4, Hardship Waiver, provides that astudent-athlete may be granted an additional year of competition by theconference or the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement for reasons of"hardship", which is defined as an incapacity resulting from aninjury or illness that has occurred under all of the following conditions: a. The incapacitating injury or illness occurs in one of the four seasons of intercollegiatecompetition at any two-year or four-year collegiate institutions or occursafter the first day of classes in the student-athlete's senior year in highschool; b. The injury or illness occurs prior to the first competition of the second half ofthe playing season that concludes with the NCAA championship in that sport (seeBylaw 14.2.4.3.4) and results in incapacity to compete for the remainder ofthat playing season; c. In team sports, the injury or illness occurs when the student-athlete has notparticipated in more than three contests or dates of competition (whichever isapplicable to that sport) or 30 percent (whichever number is greater) of theinstitution's scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition in his orher sport. Only scheduled or completed competition against outside participantsduring the playing season that concludes with the NCAA championship, or, if sodesignated, during the official NCAA championship playing season in that sport(e.g., spring baseball, fall soccer), shall be countable under this limitationin calculating both the number of contests or dates of competition in which thestudent-athlete has participated and the number of scheduled or completedcontests or dates of competition during that season in the sport. Datesof competition that are exempted (e.g., alumni contests, foreign team in U.S.)from the maximum permissible number of contests or dates of competition shallcount toward the number of contests or dates in which the student-athlete has participatedand the number of scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition inthe season, except for scrimmages and exhibition contests that are specificallyidentified as such in the sport's Bylaw 17 playing and practice seasonregulations. Scrimmages and exhibition contests that are not exemptedfrom the maximum permissible number of contests or dates of competition may beexcluded from the calculation only if they are identified as such by in thesport's Bylaw 17 playing and practice season regulations; and d. In individual sports, the injury or illness occurs when the student-athlete has notparticipated in more than three dates of competition or 30 percent (whichevernumber is greater) of the maximum permissible number of dates of competition asset forth in Bylaw 17 plus one date for a conference championship (e.g., gymnastics:13+1=14, wrestling: 16+1=17), regardless of whether the team participates inthe conference championship, provided the institution is a member of aconference and the conference holds a championship event in the applicablesport. Dates of competition that are exempted(e.g., alumni contests, foreignteam in U.S.) from the maximum permissible number of dates of competition donot count toward the number of dates in which the student-athlete hasparticipated. So, the argument is, apparently, that Taylor Martinez actually meets the requirements for a hardship extra season of eligibility. He's only played in 3 games all of which occurred during the first half of the season. But, if that's the case ... didn't Toney McCray also qualify? He missed a whole season for a redshirt his freshman year and then missed more than 70% of the season including the entire last half of the year when he would have been a junior, right? We had an open scholarship spot last year. There would have been room for him. And I think he qualified under the rules quoted above, so ... Why didn't Toney McCray get an extra year? Did we just not want another year of Toney? Quote
TheKamdyMan Posted October 10, 2013 Report Posted October 10, 2013 You can always apply but getting it is much harder. The only people that end up getting that extra year are guys that missed two seasons to injury. A guy like Sean Fisher could've applied after losing two years. Quote
nustudent Posted October 10, 2013 Report Posted October 10, 2013 There are countless examples of guys getting a sixth year, without losing a year to injury prior to the injury in question. We could've got McCray's year back had we wanted. Quote
FredsSlacks Posted October 10, 2013 Report Posted October 10, 2013 If Gibbs can do it, why can't martinez? Quote
a0t0w0 Posted October 10, 2013 Report Posted October 10, 2013 I have mixed feelings when it comes to McCray, but it would have been great to have him another year. Each year I had high hopes he would get it together and play a bigger role, but between injuries and what appeared to be a case of apathy, it just didn't seem to happen. Maybe things would have came together in that extra year. The Martinez conversation will get interesting if he's not back after the bye week. I thought the whole qb controversy argument was dumb, but every week it gets stronger. If TA ends up starting the rest of the season and meets expectations, will TM even play a role if he's given an extra year? Dangerous situation for Bo. If TM comes back after the bye week and struggles Bo will be on an even hotter seat. If TM gets another year and the team doesn't rack up more than 9 wins fans will be steaming. Bo's future appears to be riding on one player right now... Quote
