TheKamdyMan Posted March 8, 2013 Report Posted March 8, 2013 I always chuckle when people assume D-1, C-2, whatever type kids can't play just because they are in a "smaller class" Yep, so was Eikmeier, Elliason, Gessell, G. Smith, D. Smith, Carr, etc.....Everybody always ASSUMES they have to be Class A type players. Who was the last really good Class A player to go D-1? Akoy right now is the one. Sometimes these small town kids have unbelievable work ethics, they live for sports as they may not even have a movie theatre or restaurant in there town. Who's to say they don't develop well? Not trying to argue, just pointing it out. 3 of those players were Class B so they arent as low as you make them out to be and secondly all of those players played on well established AAU programs and showed their skills on a national stage to gain recognition and prove their worth. I'm aware of where they all went to school. I'm from Ralston myself so I'm by no means bagging on the Smith brothers or any Class A or B teams. My point was that good players do come from smaller classes as well. In football this is true as well. They don't have the numbers or depth of the bigger schools, but doesn't mean they don't have good athletes. These small town guys are not going to get a look from us and frankly I dont blame our staff. If we want to be an NCAA tournament team we need big fish from big ponds getting looks from big programs, example being Nick Fuller in this years class 25 ppg in the biggest class in Wisconsin. The Nebraska kids that get looks are gonna be 1 or 2 kids from the metro and the occasional Ellision type. If they want to play they can walk on and try to work their butt off to see the floor. The players originally listed from small schools all went and showed their worth playing competitive AAU hoops against the best players in the country. If they show they can compete at the highest HS level playing in essentially all-star games and putting up similar stats then NU and other schools will show them their justified "love" and offer. If they will not take the chance to join one of those teams then you cant compare and Miles cannot afford to take a chance on a longshot. Quote
Norm Peterson Posted March 8, 2013 Report Posted March 8, 2013 I think there will be the rare kid from small town Nebraska, like a Wes Eikmeier, who is able to play. But they need to play AAU so that they get exposed to a higher level of competition and show how well they handle it. Or maybe spend a season at a prep school after they graduate high school like that one kid from Waverly did that one time. Hell was his name? Lawyer now I think? Walked onto the football team as a QB? Anyway, he was being recruited or at least talked to by Indiana as I recall and they told him to enroll in a prep school for a year, which he did. And apparently he was exposed as NOT being the kind of hoops player he thought he might be. This Moon kid apparently has nice size. But Fuller is about the same size and has proved his ability against really good competition. If Moon's a great athlete and just hasn't played against enough quality players to develop the skill, well then that could happen yet. But a Class D1 kid who's only playing against Class D competition isn't going to have proven that he can get it done at a higher level. If he's serious about doing more than walking on, I sure hope he finds a team to play on this summer and has a chance to show what he can do. Quote
Norm Peterson Posted March 8, 2013 Report Posted March 8, 2013 Garth Glissman was who I'm thinking of. What's my deal with not remembering names today? (Well, I guess it's not just today.) Quote

Exactly, if they hold their own on the AAU circuit, and show they can compete in the B1G, Id have no problem with us offering. Those guys will come around every so often, but Miles knows as well as anyone its not about the x's and o's its about the jimmys and joes. Quote
GoBigRed Posted March 9, 2013 Author Report Posted March 9, 2013 As the person who started this thread, I didn't intend for this to turn into a debate about small town vs. big city players. I just simply think this: if there is a basketball player in this state who is 6'7" or taller and puts up above average numbers, I hope our staff is giving every single one of them a look before they decide whether they are good or not. It sounds like they are doing so. Tim Miles isn't afraid to look around this state for talent. I have heard that he has been in attendance at some high school games in Lincoln where there are definitely no players good enough to play at NU. But he still checks it out for himself. The guy will get it done here. Quote

Norm Peterson Posted March 9, 2013 Report Posted March 9, 2013 Did they win today? If so, I'll see him tomorrow. Quote
Norm Peterson Posted March 9, 2013 Report Posted March 9, 2013 Sorry, but Adam Moon is probably a walk-on prospect at best. He scored 12 points tonight in a losing effort against Paxton. He didn't score at all in the 1st or 4th quarters. Missed the front end of a 1 and 1 in the 4th quarter and that's the only shot he took in the final period. His team entered the 4th with a 3 pt lead and only scored 6 points in the final period. If he's a potential D1 recruit, he's going to be taking more than just a single free throw in the final period of a close game. OK, so someone posted about him having an ankle sprain. That could make a difference. Disappointed that I won't be able to see him tomorrow but that's the breaks. I'm sure he's more disappointed than I am. Quote
GoBigRed Posted March 9, 2013 Author Report Posted March 9, 2013 Rough outing but yeah he did sprain his ankle yesterday and supposedly was gimpy on it tonight. Quote
basketballjones Posted March 21, 2013 Report Posted March 21, 2013 NAIA level player, seen him multiple times. Quote
