Can someone in the know explain to me where all our money is and where it came from?  I know we get money from various Big Ten sources, TV deals, butts in the seats and so forth.  But a large chunk of our money comes from boosters, correct?  I have heard a fair bit of chirping from boosters who are growing tired of where some of their money is going and/or how it is being spent.  Buying out contracts seems to be an ongoing bottomless pit and we are making a significant amount of upgrades on our venues and the like.

When we "the fans" talk about having loads of cash, we should also understand where that cash comes from and where it is intended to go.  I remember talking to a friend a number of years ago that had been giving a pretty good chunk of change to the athletic department.  He told them that he wanted his donation to go to specific places within the program.  He was told that would not happen.  He then decided to no longer donate that healthy chunk of change.

I guess what I am getting at is that money doesn't grow on trees.  Spending has to be prudent and most boosters want their dollars to be spent wisely with good return on that donation.

We need to be a little careful what we are wishing for, it may be like a kid at Christmas who wished for a pony, and when he opened his presents, received a stuffed pony.

Well the University gets $50 million from the Big 10 alone. Then you factor in attendance and donations. The athletic department is not hurting for money and has in fact put money aside in a reserve fund. They have the money to go out and offer a good salary to coach basketball. The big question is whether they can lure those types of coaches here.

I did find this article. Since this came out, our revenue will jump this year as we are now fully vested in the Big Ten.  About time.

NU’s revenues of $120,205,090 ranked seventh in the Big Ten. Its expenses — $112,571,632 — ranked 24th nationally and eighth in the league. Iowa’s revenues ($130,681,467) and expenses ($128,869,211) ranked 18th and 15th nationally, respectively.

NU got a little more than $26 million from the league for 2016-17. Michigan’s athletic department announced last week that it received a $51.1 million distribution from the Big Ten for television agreements. Nebraska now gets the same as any full-share school.

An extra couple million is really not that big a deal in the grand scheme of a budget with a full revenue share from the conference.  We need to aim high, not be afraid to get rejected, and hope that the challenge and fit seems right for someone.  If that doesn't work then pony up for Marshall or Sampson.  There is no doubt in my mind, we could become a consistent tourney team under their guidance.  Part of it is that they hate to lose and develop players well(I know Marshall is great at this, Sampson I think is but not as sure).  Whoever we get must be good at X and O, developing players, and at least a decent recruiter.
