When you throw in a couple of conference challenge games and one early season tournament, your schedule is close to finished.  Not too many cupcake games will be available.  And to touch on that for a moment, it may damage some of the lesser leagues as they may lose access to money games.

This was my exact same thought as well. Both major revenue sports, football and basketball, are reducing the number of out-of-conference games (by increasing conference games). I'm sure nearly all of us can agree that NCAA has become a big money business over the decades and there have been a lot of decisions that have been made recently that favor the Power Five conferences.

Stepping back and looking at a holistic view of the collegiate platform, moving toward an even more conference heavy schedule seems to put these mid-majors and low-majors at a major disadvantage. Just think about Boise State football and their frustrations of performing strongly in their conference while trying to schedule Power Five conferences and often getting turned down. Fewer non-conference slots = fewer opportunities for the little guys. You might as well create a FCS for basketball (okay, maybe that's an over-exaggeration).
