As someone mentioned earlier, cannot call time out to light a fire under everyone’s bum.
-
Phew, finally made one!
-
In 16 minutes, we’ve made 3 field goals.
-
Ugh, starting the game with a 6 point first quarter. Once Maryland gets going, it’ll be ugly.
-
That's part of it, and I think a lot of trainers try to train them like men, when there could be better ways to do things based on physiological differences. But that's probably opening up a whole can of worms.

Whitney Brown ... anyone know what happened to her?
huskerchode replied to Tom Jones's topic in Row 6 Seat 10
I noticed this yesterday, too. I went to their website to see how she’s doing and was surprised that she has been removed from the roster. Hope she’s doing okay. -
OSU had too many shots early in the game where they were wide open, either under the basket or at the 3 point line. We certainly do miss AW. When your shots aren't falling, you step it up on defense (or at least that's what I was always told). I don't understand why so many of our shots under the basket were complete misses, sometimes not even touching the rim. I realize there was contact on some of them, but, still, I expect to see a better percentage there. This team needs to start the game with a nasty attitude on defense. Try to keep the other team from scoring on their first 3 possessions, or something like that. And stop trying to pass the ball through two defenders.

I agree about starting Hake. We need to have better offensive production at the beginning of the game.
-
First quarter killed us, I darn near turned the channel. We win the other 3 quarters by 4 points or so. Why can't we start games on fire? Instead, I see us driving into traffic, chucking up a shot that oftentimes doesn't hit the rim. What are we doing? Also, JS couldn't get going in this game, which could be why we started so slowly. SH was trying, but her shots weren't falling early. And, of course, everything OSU chucked up went in, so that didn't help. But there were a number of times where we didn't have a defender anywhere near their shooter early in the game, making it easy on them. If we could wipe out the first 5 minutes of the game, we might win this. One other thing, and this is for people that go to the games: Has there been a drop-off in the camaraderie on the bench that we were used to seeing last year?

Somehow, we’re still hanging around in this. I’m impressed with Hake, and I thought MM lifted us with a couple of buckets and an assist or two. AM seemed to play a little better after that.

Coach Amy Williams on Sports Nightly (pre-Rutgers Game)
huskerchode replied to Red Don's topic in Row 6 Seat 10
Yes, that's what I'm saying. I doubt it will happen at the end of this season, though, but knowing that we are losing Haiby next year, and it sounds like we will lose Bourne, too, I don't have very high expectations for next year. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. You never know. On a side note, I'm one of these people that embraced the 3 point line when it was introduced into basketball. Now I hate it. Seems like the mid-range jumper is a thing of the past. I'm tired of seeing players (I'm not talking about NU, I'm talking all of college basketball here) barely dribble across the half court line, then chuck up a 3. That's okay if the time is winding down and you have no choice, but I've seen it too many times when there is plenty left on the clock. I've also seen players recruited mainly because they can knock down a 3 consistently, but are not able to play decent defense or handle the ball well. Call me an old codger longing for the days when the 3 point shot didn't exist. -
Coach Amy Williams on Sports Nightly (pre-Rutgers Game)

I agree with this. I had grown accustomed to the previous coach getting us to the NCAAs most years, with a few WNITs sprinkled in (except for her first year and one really off year after we lost a lot of the team after our almost-undefeated season). I feel that having the same expectations of Williams as I did of Yori is reasonable. I will also note that I have largely lost interest in watching this team, happened about 2 or 3 years ago for me. Not having a player connection to the program is part of it. Another part is that I watch more and more non-NU WBB, and then when I switch to a game of ours that is actually televised, it seems like a drop-off. TBH, I prefer to watch Creighton, and I never thought I would say that. So one of my questions is this - how much longer does NU wait? -
I’m not exactly sure what she can say after a debacle like today.
-
I had to take my eyes off the game too many times (because I just couldn’t watch anymore). What was Williams’ demeanor on the sideline?
-
I miss having a defense.
-
Will we make it to 40?
-
How many wide open 3s are we going to give them?
-
Something is really off with this team.
-
This is difficult to watch.
-
I was thinking the exact same thing last night.

Since her mom is a university employee, she has a 50% tuition benefit for undergraduate coursework. Used it for one of my kids around 15 years ago.

Last night was the first time I've spent in a long while watching the WBB team (outside of the occasional clip I've seen on SM). It was hard to watch. Outside of the VB team, what sport has had consistent success in the past 10-15 years at NU? What the heck has happened to the athletic department? Meanwhile up I-80 in Omaha, Creighton is enjoying a successful VB team (not as good as the Huskers but still a darn good team), successful MBB and WBB, and a pretty good men's soccer team as well. Is it because they don't have a FB team to worry about? I just can't figure out how almost the entire NU athletic department has gotten into such a funk.

"Also Connie Yori being an in game consultant really helps them also." Yes, this can't be emphasized enough.

I think she played this past Wednesday.

"girls are leaving basketball"-interesting read...
huskerchode replied to whoopdeedoo's topic in Row 6 Seat 10
JMO (based on my experience of raising an athletic daughter in the state of Nebraska who participated in three sports at the club level): the overwhelming majority of basketball coaches (club and HS), expected her to play year-round basketball and either drop or greatly reduce her other activities. She enjoyed the other two sports too much, so guess which sport she dropped after her freshman year in HS? Basketball, and she wasn't the only one. I know of at least a dozen girls her age that could have easily played DII basketball, a few even DI basketball, that gave it up for that reason. These girls, including my daughter, preferred to play on the intramural team in HS (with the boys), and focus their efforts on softball, soccer, volleyball, or track and field because they were fed up with coaches who demanded they be in the gym year round. Most of these girls went on to compete at the DI level in sports other than basketball. Could they have been an asset to their HS basketball teams? Yes, definitely. Did they want to make basketball their priority 365 days of the year? No, absolutely not. But it was made clear by their HS coaches that if they weren't willing to do that, they would be riding the bench. These were girls that attended every HS practice during the season, but maybe weren't in the gym during the offseason as much as the coach wanted to see (only because they were participating in other sports). A good example of this was when we were on the east coast at a championship level event one summer, my daughter was still in middle school. The HS coach called her and asked if she would play in a summer basketball tournament that he was coaching for the HS team. She would have loved to, except we were in South Carolina for the full week and wouldn't be back in time. That should have been the end of it, right? Nope. He put her on a guilt trip for a good year after that, made her feel horrible for not flying back early to play in this tournament. My daughter played a lot of different sports at different levels growing up. The only one she ever soured on was basketball, which was too bad because up until around 8th grade, it was her favorite and the one she thought she wanted to do in college. Then it got hyper-demanding of her time and, unfortunately, there was a lot of politics in it as well. It became a negative experience for her and for several other kids we knew. It was much easier to balance multiple sports by dropping basketball. The other thing we noticed throughout her years playing sports is that some of the least athletic kids we ever met were on the soccer fields and basketball courts (more so on the soccer fields). You can be skilled but not athletic to play both those sports, or it's at least easier to hide your lack of athleticism. That's not true with VB and track and field. If you aren't athletic, it shows, you can't hide it. More and more athletic girls started choosing VB over basketball. Most of the nonathletic ones (or average athletic) avoided track and field like it was the plague. If you can't run, jump, or throw, you aren't going to have much success in track and field. But you might have success in soccer if you can play disruptive defense, or in basketball if you can consistently nail a 3 point shot. And that gives their parents something to brag about. If I had a dollar for every time a basketball or soccer parent told me their daughter was a DI recruit (when she was only 10 years old), I could retire 10 years early.
