Ohio State Game Thread: The Calliope Crashed to the Ground

I go Rivers. 13 and 6. -
He played against Northwestern. Probably should have had that injury before conference play.

I disagree with Jim Jackson in that Nebraska shouldn't hang their heads. Yes, we should. Now, you tell them to bring that effort every night, and you can win a good majority of your game at homes. We need to change the mentality that it okay to lose as long as we try hard. If we keep doing that we're never going to win an NCAA tourney game let along get there. -

Is there a game this year on the BTN when we don't have an analyst that played for the other team. I understand we aren't going to have any of our players being an analyst unless BTN hires him, but this is at least the 2nd game this year that had an analyst that played for the team Nebraska was playing that night. -
We have NEVER had a non-winning record at the Bob.

I thought it was kind of strange that they mentioned that too. But, in all fairness, on a national level Nebraska hasn't really ever been all that relevant in basketball, even during the Nee years. But consider this...Ole Miss is making a strong run towards an NCAA tourney bid this year, which would end a drought for them that dates back to 2002. Quick, without looking it up, who was the Ole Miss coach back then? Heck, who is their coach now, for that matter? From our own myopic viewpoint, it seems bizarre to think that Danny Nee is so easily forgotten. But really, he wasn't ever all that well known in the first place to joe basketball fan outside old Big 8 territory. That is all very true and valid young 49er. What irks me is this, if you've invested a Saturday afternoon watching a meaningless Nebraska/Northwestern game, the chances you've heard of Danny Nee are very high. Andy Kennedy is their coach now. I didn't have to look that up. Rod Barnes was the coach in 2002, and I had to look that up. -
I do not remember who... but I do remember some calling him out saying he could not cut it. Kind of reminds me of the same people calling out Benny already. I have not called out Benny but it is getting difficult not to. He played 30 minutes last night and took either zero or one shot! When the ball is passed around the perimeter he does not even look at basket. He never penetrates which is a cardinal of sin of a point guard, especially one who vertically challenged like Benny. When he's in the game, the opponents enjoy having five guys guarding four huskers and saging in toward the lane because he is not even a threat to shoot. His high school clips indicated that he was a driving, whirling wizard but it looks like he has zero confidence on offense at the D1 level. Why anyone wouldn't pur up five or six times in 30 minutes of play when they know they are not going to be benched because there is no one else going to replace them is beyond me. Being only a few inches taller than Benny and having played point guard, I like Benny but he's looking to me like a redshirt at best next year and I would not be surprised if he transfers to a smaller level school.I hope I am wrong and wish him well. Nobody's ever improved their shooting from one year to the next. I mean look at Gallegos, his first year he shot 34% from 3. His second year he shot 14%, and this year he is shooting 31%. Parker brings items to the table to make him useful. He handles the ball well with an almost 1.5 assist to turnover ratio for a freshmen. He plays good defense. The only downfall he has is his confidence in his shot. Actually, we don't even need him to score a bunch. He just needs to hit some shots to make the defense guard him. Minnesota's defense was awful if they had 5 guys guarding 4 last night, as he still had 6 assists. Somebody made the comparison of Charles Richardson, a good point guard but he averaged 2 points per game his first two years, 4 points his junior year, and 8 points his senior year.

So far, the three games we had against Ohio State, were in a year that we had hardly any effort, and one in which was our first game in the Big 10 for a great majority of our roster. I agree to give it a little time. As for Saturday night, this might be our last shot an upset. I don't see us beating Michigan State or Minnesota at home with their athleticism in the front court. Ohio State can be beat. We need to guard the backcourt and Thomas, and hope they miss shots, and REBOUND the miss shots. Also, we need to make some shots, and not turn the ball over. I just looked up the stats for the first game. OSU only had 10 offensive rebounds, while we had 8. I'm calling a court storming tomorrow night!!!!!!!

Illinois Game Thread: Attack of the (orange and) Blue Meanies

Agree 100% but sportsmanship as it was taught to me is gone. Today the youngins simply say you don't like it stop them from doing it. And Coz just proved me right I don't mind as long as it's subs. The starters are what makes it worse. -
Couple things work in Parkers favor, though. First, he should be healthy by then, he's not now. Plus, he'll be the only true point guard on the team. Gallegos, Webster and Biggs all are more suited for the 2 spot. There will be minutes for Parker if he can get the team into and out of the offense. Don't need a true point if you have multiple combo guards. I don't think Parker is good enough unfortunately for this level of play. You have got to have perimiter guys on the court that are threats to score. And that may be what happens. You also don't need a scorer at the point of the other four can score. All he has to do is get the ball where it needs to be. He doesn't have to score a bunch, but he has to hit enough shots to keep the defense honest. That's any PG.

C'mon I hang on every word...I need a little more context as I didn't really hear the lead in question and circumstances. They basically asked him what he has done differently the last few games to look very confident out there. He said he had a talk with coach and it helped him play much better. They asked him what coach said, and then he said the thing about it's between him and coach.

I have a simple solution. Unless it is an absolute blatent elbow to the head. Nothing should be called. I understand protecting players, but I am watching the WSU/Creighton game, and the same thing happened. The defensive guy gets RIGHT under the offensive player, and again they call a flagrant foul for the defensive player. It should have been just play on as you are rewarding the defensive player in an obscene way. It was a turnover for Creighton plus two free throws.

He said it was between him and coach, and then laughed.

16 for 16 from the free throw line was the biggest stat in the game, if we don't get to the line very often we need to hit everyone of them which we did today. -

Talley also added 6 Ast. with 1 TO's. Very good game on that hand. Even though he needs to hit shots, he found the hot guys and allowed them to hit shots. -

It should have been a foul on PSU as they got a bunch of arm. I would have been much more for the call if they called the foul on PSU. I understand protecting kids but that ridiculous. You are rewarding the defensive player EVERY time in this case. All you have to do is body up and the offensive player can go nowhere. The defensive guy doesn't have to worry about the elbow because the offensive player will get a flagrant foul. -
So what happened at the end of the game?
brfrad replied to hal9000's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
As I found out in the game thread it was a fair call with regard to the elbow. However, PSU should have been called for a foul as they were all but killing Ubel in the corner. Should have been a foul on PSU and Ubel. Therefore, I think Ubel would have gotten 2 free throws, and PSU would have been able to shoot 2 free throws. -
Please, please, please if you go to the game, unless we are losing by 15 points in the final 2 minutes, do not leave early. Miles made it a point to call TO last game to give the team a message that the fans are leaving early because you didn't give a great effort. I know all the people on here will not leave, but I wish we could get that message across.

I have my own qualms with the call in the fact that it should have been a FOUL ON PSU!! I didn't know you could rake at the guys arm until he loses the ball. -

I thought that was the rule. That if it was unintentional it was nothing. -

Benny played better today. His defense helps a bunch. If he can get a shot that makes people guard him he still could get some minutes. Look at Rivers. He was awful last year shooting, but seems to have some confidence and at least makes people guard him. -

According to live stats, Shields finished with 29 points. 1 off the school record for a freshmen. -

It didn't hurt that PSU went 1-6 from the free throw line down the stretch. Our free throw defense was amazing the last 32 seconds!!! -

So, grabbing a guy's arm and trying to strip the ball, and Ubel gets the flagrant foul with no call on PSU. -

Miles doesn't tweet at halftime. Shamus Mcknight does. Under his name which he has to give the OK. It's no different than a coach talking to a TV reporter about what he saw in the first half. He says something that takes 10 seconds to tweet, so you can imagine how long it takes to say. I know that 5 seconds that he spent saying it was the worst defense we've played all year cost us the game. -

I was wondering the same thing, but if Rey and Dylan do not start shooting better we aren't winning a game. Again, it is that simple. They are combining to shoot 31% from the floor and 21% from 3 in conference play. Those MUST go up if we have any hope of winning multiple games in this league.
