Tennessee State (1-3) vs. Nebraska (3-2) Game Thread

I applaud this man's fandom for a team that has been coached to hack at balls for the last four years, putting everyone on the line during that time. -
Nebraska Cornhuskers (3-2) vs Tennessee State Tigers (1-3) Date: Tuesday Nov 23, 2021 Time: 8:00 pm Arena: PBA Broadcast: BTN Tennessee St. Head Coach: Penny Collins Location: Nashville, TN Conference: Ohio Valley Nickname: Tigers Mascot: Aristocat the Tiger Last time out: Lost to South Dakota Shirt not to wear: Tiger, Blue Opening Line: Nebraska by 18.5 Other: This is the first time Nebraska has ever played Tennessee St Oprah went to college here Freshman Guard Hercy Miller is the son of rapper Master P Southern, Tennessee St, and South Dakota all play each other this year The Tigers have used 4 starting lineups in four games. Player to watch: Carlos Marshall Two years ago Marshall was the Tiger's leading scorer but sat out all of last year with a hip injury. Once again he's leading the team in scoring and has been hot from 3 to start the season. Like most everyone on this team, has been turning the ball over at an alarming rate. Player to watch: Dedric Boyd Illinois St transfer Boyd is an aggressive scorer who's shot well and one the few Tigers not aggressively turning the ball over. Not sure if his lack of playing time is due to Collins rotating players a lot or if he's a defensive liability Possible Tiger Starters 21 Kenny Cooper G 6-1 Gr. Nashville, Tenn. / WKU 1 Marcus Fitzgerald Jr. G 6-2 Fr. Nashville, Tenn. / Pearl-Cohn 11 Kassim Nicholson F 6-7 Gr. Jackson, Miss. / UAB 4 Christian Brown F 6-6 So. Chattanooga, Tenn. / Scotland Campus The Rest of the Roster Quickly Lipscomb/W. Kentucky PG transfer Kenny Cooper has been pretty shaky to start the season. Have him make a few before really guarding him Marcus Fitzgerald servers as a combo guard in this offense; hot from 3 to start the season Jalen Dupree is a Derrick Walker clone at center for the Tigers Kassim Nicholson is a load on the board and is capable of shooting from outside Georgia transfer Christian Brown draws a lot of contact offensively and defensively Hercy Miller has been guard depth David Acosta and Emmanuel Dowuona are your typical large unskilled guys who rebound and shot block well but foul a ton and don't score UNL Game Notes Probable starters for Nebraska 1 Alonzo Verge G 6-3 5 Bryce McGowens G 6-7 23 Keon Edwards G 6-7 11 Lat Mayen F 6-9 13 Derrick Walker F 6-9 Bench 32 Wilhelm Breidenbach F 6-10 30 Keisei Tominaga G 6-2 0 C.J. To this point, ,the Tigers haven't really found it yet though they've probably played better than their record and KenPom rating would indicate. The Tigers have been shooting the ball well. Defensively they'll try and run Nebraska off the 3pt line and aggressively defend. They're a decent rebounding team but what might make this a very unfortunate night for Tennessee St is that they've been quite bad at two things that have been absolutely fueling Nebraska this season: turning the ball over and putting people on the line. If the Tigers can change their stripes a bit, their outside shooting gives them a chance. If Nebraska zips in a couple of 3s early this could get ugly. Feels like Nebraska is putting the pieces together in what should be a disjointed game. Prediction: Nebraska 91 - Tennessee St 68 View full article

Southern Pregame with Kent and Fred, which covered this topic K: Anything you didn't like about Friday night? (Idaho St game) F: The biggest thing was they got it going from the 3pt line and just our overall urgency on the close outs has to improve, especially when a team gets it going. Thought we did a terrific job of keeping the ball out of the paint but when a team gets going like that we have to better contest. K: Let me ask you a little bit about that. Without Trey in the lineup, and I might be using the wrong terminology here, but it looks like a bit of a pack line defense. Is that right and do anticipate more threes out there by opponents as a result? F: Well, we were more in our gaps than we had been, we had been getting out in the passing lines a little bit more in those first couple of games. With our best perimeter defender being out of the lineup for the next 6-8 weeks we're going to have to be in our gaps and keep teams out of the paint. When teams get into the paint that gives them every option. When you're in that gap if gives them just that one and then you have a good stunt and a good recovery to that shooter. Give those guys credit they did hit some contested shots against us but that was after they hit a few and got confident. So yeah, we will be in our gaps probably a bit more than we were without Trey and the makeup of our team right now.

From observation, the formula is to take actual notes during the game. You jot them down in approximately 4 minute chunks that correspond with the TV timeouts. -
They've lost 3 of their last 4 to Marquette

Am I misremembering things that last year Hoiberg spent our covid pause watching game tape (and the American Pie movies) and deciding we should focus on defense more? Doesn't it sort of track with the results on the court that we have a coach in Sadler who prefers to pack the paint (that was Bobby Lutz's MO as well) but that we also have a head coach that isn't particularly focused on defensive execution? That would explain a pack line defense with poor rotations. Sadler's contract runs through April 2022 and then we'll see what happens. To me though changing the defensive philosophy seems like addressing the effect and not the cause.

Doc can coach and he can especially coach defense. Seems like the issue is how much he gets to do that these days for whatever reason(s)

Southern Head Coach: Sean Woods Location: Baton Rouge, LA Conference: SWAC Nickname: Jaguars Last time out: Lost to South Dakota Shirt not to wear: Yellow, Leopard Opening Line: Nebraska by 17 Other: The last time these teams played was in the first year of the Fred Hoiberg era. It took OT and a career high 22 points from Jervay Green to pull out the win No one is still on the roster for Nebraska from that game 2 years ago. Southern, Tennessee St, and South Dakota all play each other this year Player to watch: Jayden Sadler Everything begins with the Jaguar senior PG who has been a 4 year starter for coach Sean Wood. Sadler leads the team in scoring and assists while rarely attempting more than a single 3pt attempt a game. Player to watch: Damien Sears This doesn't have much in the height or size department. Lyons is one of the few players on the entire roster who approximates a center. The stocky Sears leads the team in offensive rebounds and is the one guy Nebraska needs to body up when a shot goes up. Offensively, they'll look to run into the paint but expect them to fire up more 3pt shots than usual as Nebraska packs the paint. Nebraska will come into this with a great chance to win the rebounding game and score some easy points off of Southern fouls or turnovers. While it's possible Nebraska can put this team away early with some 3s, it's likely this will be a game of runs where Nebraska will need to keep coming as Southern won't be intimated and they won't quit. Prediction: Nebraska 84 - Southern 72

Southern (1-3) vs. Nebraska (2-2) Game Thread

This is a dangerous team -
I get this thread but I look at our defensive numbers and our offensive numbers during the Hoiberg era and I don't get this thread. Style, and that was this thread is about, doesn't dictate results; 3pa% is a style indicator. Tony Bennett is walking proof you can win a lot of games taking away the 2.

Is this Nate Loenser's deal or is it less specialized this year?

It looked like they have chemistry off the court as they were hamming it up to the music before the start of the second half with the rest of the bench.
