I know we all agree on this, but man, it'll be awesome when Morrow doesn't have to play Center. -

Against Miss. Valley State, Trueblood came in just before the end of the 1st half and sagged of his man to help, and ended up giving up a 3 to end the half. Miles wasn't yelling, but was certainly having a conversation with him all the way into the locker room. I'm in no way trying to pick on the young man, btw, just an observation. -
I'd be satisfied with 4-2

Evelyn had the streetball mix tape move of the game when he split the two defenders with the behind the back dribble move, that was nice. -

Anyone else notice Trueblood coming in, giving up that 3, Miles getting on him, and all of a sudden Laws replaces him? Perhaps they were resting for NY too!?!? -

I was walking back to my car thinking the same thing! A win is still a win, but at times, this game was a bit sloppy. Still, on to Thanksgiving and then bigger and better things. -
I had the opportunity to travel to a NU vs. K-State game with a ref from NW Iowa during a Coach Collier year. Can't remember the exact year, but K-state absolutely smoked us and John McCardle from Millard North (football recruit) was in attendance getting recruited to play for the Wildcats. It was on a weekday, I think a Wednesday. They get reimbursed for all travel, hotel if applicable, and are provided a meal by the home team. K-state gave him a box very similar to what you would see in a typical Jimmy John's lunch box. This particular ref did NCAA and even Final Four games, so he was on the high side, at the time I believed it was close to 1,250.00 per game, and he typically did 2-3 games per 7 days.

Can't be a good sign for Hammond. If he isn't a better option than Moses or Leslee at this point, then I'm not so sure he wasn't a "miss" by the coaching staff. I'm not writing the guy off, he could still improve tremendously....but wow, Leslee tries hard but at 6'8" with no knees and a 4" vertical, he's hardly a threat...and Moses.....oh, Moses. -

That Big Ten tourney collapse was near catastrophic. Affected us mentally and I'm still not sure it's completely healed... -
There we have it folks. The final circle of Nebraska Basketball Hell. The stage where we start to bring back names from our torrid past. "If only we would just have this guy and this guy from that team and that era, we'd be fine."Obviously we've been talking about missing Rey all year, but that's not uncommon for any team to miss a senior from the year before. But when we start bringing up the Conk's name, you know the season is over. Took us a while this year, proud of everyone. You miss my point jones. I was merely pointing out (in a thread talking about how nobody wants or is capable of shooting a three), that in the past we've had guys that were capable of shooting and more than willing to shoot the three. I've seen plenty of other threads where people have made comparisons to players from the past. Didn't know we were only allowed to talk about previous year's players, and after that it puts us in a circle of basketball hell. Why is bringing up Conklin's name to you a sign that our season is truly over? The guy shot 56% his Senior year from distance (66-118) and shot 65% from the outside in Big 12 play. Statistically he ranked 1st in the nation amongst all players with at least 20 3 point attempts. Yeah, talking about that sad sap surely means we're all doomed to hell.

Honestly the Rhode Island game. The players pipe dream of an undefeated season came crashing down and they were hungover from that loss all the way into the UNO game, they got behind by quite a bit against UNO in the first half and Miles was quoted as saying that was them still being hungover from the Rhode Island game. I dunno, maybe they couldn't handle seeing an opposing team's fanbase storm the court because of them losing. It probably made them realize they were now the hunted.

I noticed multiple times in the Iowa game where we didn't even catch a pass cleanly, it bobbled or a player took his eye off it and he almost lost it. One time Petteway was just dribbling on his own and lost it to the Iowa sideline. Lack of focus. -
Exactly. We run a Motion Offense but our players don't always execute it the way it's designed, and many are content not to move and start to just "watch" the action. Based on the conversation I had with Mike this past weekend, the offense is designed to pick apart switching defenses when mismatches can occur. They run the top of the key weave until a mismatch is identified and then taken advantage of. Last year on no sit sunday, look at how many times Petteway had a layup on Kaminsky, because Walt was up top and Kaminsky ended up switching on Petteway. Same with Shields. This year, it hasn't been as successful because I think other teams are wiser and giving Petteway and Shields a lot more attention than last. Some of our other players have to just shoot within the offense and not pump fake and then pass. Against Iowa, mulitple times Shavon would drive, take one or two dribbles, pick up his dribble, then pass back outside, hence, nothin' doing.

Give me a starting 5 of Petteway, a confident (mentally confident) Shields, Brian Conklin, Cary Cochran, and Nate Johnson. I'm not sure we'd have many rebounds but it's not like we do now. At least Shields and Petteway would have plenty of room to drive because of the outside shooting of the others, and Nate's ability to drive as well.

I heard Coach Miles say his comment about "if some of the players don't start playing here next year, they won't be here" comment. He then immediately said "I'm only kidding, guys" He isn't going to kick off 2/3 of our roster or even 1/2 of it. He's not that type of coach. I hope he makes prudent lineup changes but I highly doubt one day we read that 4-6 players are instantly transferring. -
The scout team last year was vastly different than this year. Locker room had leadership last year with Peltz and Reyes more than people think. Peltz barely played but the young guys leaned on him in the locker room, and he was a bulldog in practices...didn't let guys slack either. And I agree, higher expectations = higher pressure, and some guys didn't handle it as well.

Against Michigan State this year, Petteway started 0-3 from the three point line. One rimmed in and out, the game was close, the guy behind me yelled "Don't ever take a three the rest of the game Petteway!!!!!" Petteway proceeded to hit back to back threes and in the postgame, Coach Izzo said those back to back threes "broke the game open" I for one, am happy when Petteway fires away. And as for his pull up three's in transition?? Better than passing the ball around for 31 seconds and then have a guy get blocked or turn it over or shoot an air ball, all which happened during the Iowa game. -

Who is the head case and who is the volume shooter? I kid, I kid!!!! -
Being at the game today and seeing our former players, two names from recent years came to mind. Cary Cochran and Marcus Perry. Shoot, throw in Paul Velander too. Usually we always have someone who can consistently knock them down. Even Reyes over his career. I just don't get it.

I think the Hesitation and Indecisiveness is what makes us so easy to guard. Oh, also putting up 13-17 points in the first half makes it easy too. Hesitation comes from lack of confidence. IMHO, we don't have much confidence at all from top to bottom. Amazing, considering how much we had at times last year. What happened to it? Did the Rhode Island loss on the road really "crush" our team's goal of going undefeated?? I also think Coach Mile's will even admit, he figured we'd be way better on offense based on last year, and was content to let the guys try and play through some of their early struggles, hoping things would come together, which they haven't. Oh yeah, some of our back door cuts and passes today were terribly executed.

Husker Legends Weekend - February 22nd

Especially with how that 1st half concluded. ((gulp)) Thankfully they were all down in the tunnel getting lined up during the final 3.5 minutes of the first half, right when Iowa was on their 21-2 run. -
Even with upgraded players for next year, let's take a look at our actual offensive system. It's a motion heavy offense built around high action and heavy ball handling from the perimeter. It's suited to pick apart defenses that have problems switching into mismatches, then a Petteway or Shields can drive and attack, and go to the line. Last year, this happened quite a bit. If teams sagged too much, Walt or Ray were there to make an outside shot. Shoot, I even remember one game where Nate Hawkins shot a couple of wide open threes and made them, because teams were sagging off of them. The problem is, we have guys that are open, but hesitant to shoot. I've never seen a team pump fake from the perimeter so much in my life of watching basketball. What that pump fake basically does is allow the defender to recover, and then if say, Shavon decides to take off towards the rim, he's guarded vs. when he had space. I'm not picking specifically on Shavon, but he is a guy who is widely talented but has some serious issues with mental focus and hesitating. Bottom line, they need to be able to put 5 guys on the court that are threats to score, in a variety of ways. We can't just have Walt as only a 3 point shooter, we need versatile guys. Hoping Watson and White can ignite some things next year and create more room for the rest of the team.
