Nebraska isn't a good fit for Tai's skillset
PeltzFan12 replied to Some_Fulla's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I feel your pain. The guy behind me usually brings a really annoyingly loud, completely clueless lady with him, and I swear, they spend 95% of the time moaning and whining about Nebraska vs. cheering for them. Meanwhile, my 7 year old son who asks me why they use such bad language throughout the game. I guess some people don't mind dropping numerous F-bomb's in front of kids. Classy. During the MSU game, every time Petteway took a three pointer, they yelled as loudly as they could saying "What the hell are you doing?" the first three times. The man yelled "stop shooting threes Terran, don't take anymore the rest of the game!" They also yelled at him on attempts 4 and 5, which he drained back to back. Of course, both started cheering when they went in. I was really tempted to turn around and say, "I'm sure glad Mr. Petteway didn't listen to your crappy advice about not shooting anymore threes...." SMH. -

Miles himself said Walt deserved to be ejected from the game. And that Walt knows better and shouldn't have done it. He was frustrated, but shouldn't have thrown a bow. Ready for Michigan!!! -
I think Tai's ability to lock down Hollins in the Minny game and today, at times, Travis Trice and others really helped. Again, nothing against Benny, I love his energy and hustle, but 5'8" is not 6'2" or 6'4"

Nebraska isn't a good fit for Tai's skillset

Based on my interaction with the players, I can tell you, Tarin Smith is a legitimate 6'2", and Tai Webster is taller than Tarin. As mentioned, Tai was a stud volleyball player and had some vine videos of him throwing it down before he came here. In game action, Tai has actually blocked/contested some shots where I would believe he has that vertical. During the game vs. Sparty, after Petteway's dunk attempt on Dawson clanked about 25' in the air, it was Tai who went way up to grab that ball over Denzel Valentine, who I believe is close to 6'7". From where my seats were, I was looking straight at that play and Tai skied for that ball. Before last season, at the Big Red tipoff, they had a dunk contest and Walt showed some really nice ups. At times Walt runs goofy, but I think he can really jump. At times. -
Nebraska isn't a good fit for Tai's skillset

Sometimes, just sometimes, it takes certain players a year or two to "get" it. To develop. Apologies for citing a CU player as an example, but Anthony Tolliver was an absolute bust his first two years, and most of those dumbjay fans wanted to run him out of Omaha. Needless to say, he developed his final two years. Tai has what you simply can not teach, coach, or even to a certain extent, develop. He has a 6'4" body with a long wingspan, great quickness, and a 38" vertical. He has a desire to help the team. Miles has said repeatedly that he is always working hard and has a great attitude. He doesn't pout. He was so emotional late last year because he wanted to be a contributor, and you could tell that it meant a lot, and that it hurt. So, Athleticism, Character, Hard-working, and determination. I'll take that anyday. -

And a nice transition assist to Leslie Smith on a fastbreak. He was big tonight. -
The guy could have very easily packed it in when he got benched and went from a starter to not seeing more than 2-3 minutes per game. Many of us on this board predicted he was going to go back home after the season, and some openly hoped he would transfer or decide to leave on his own. I like Tai's potential. He has the body, he has the quickness and athleticism. He didn't always have it in the mental game. I'm not sure he has completely gotten over some of his lack of confidence, but I think we will all agree, a confident Tai is a productive Tai, which will help us out immensely.

It's safe to say Tai replaced Walt's offense and then some, considering he was 2-2 from 3 point and 7-8 from the Free Throw line, I thought he played with a ton of confidence and poise, it's like he's not afraid of having the ball anymore. That crossover he had with a step back three was saweet. -
Tarin Smith, 18 games into freshman season
PeltzFan12 replied to Norm Peterson's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Yes, those summer league games were at Omaha South and I believe the previous year were in Council Bluffs. I was sitting with John Turek's dad when Roburt Sallie broke a CU player's ankle on a crossover (Pierce Hibma, I think) drove down the lane, and one hand tomahawked dunked on a CU big (Michael Grimes I think) I remember thinking he was going to singlehandedly turn the tide in NU hoops recruiting. I'll just stop there... -
Was it really Freeman's voice? I swore it was, but then heard it was just some guy that sounded like him.

Tarin Smith, 18 games into freshman season
PeltzFan12 replied to Norm Peterson's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Please allow me to share a funny but true story. So back in the day, when Huskers and Jays played in the summer league at Omaha South High School, I used to attend. I was at the game that featured Steve Harley and Cookie Miller vs. Cavel Witter, P'Allen, and Booker Woodfox and saw Shang Ping level Joe Dabbert. Maric played too. During that game, Sek Henry wasn't playing. He was sitting in the front row with his good pal's Ricky Thenarse and Anthony West. Across the gym, is this punk named Chad Millard who's yapping it up with Sek and Ricky. At one point, I thought Ricky was going to go over there and pummel Millard. After a challenge was issued to meet after the game, Millard grew quiet, and clung to the Jay's players after the game. He basically hid next to Joe Dabbert and scampered out of there. Sek was quite vocal for his hatred of all things Blue, and promised me he'd do everything in his power to kick their A** Well, I think NU won by 2, but Sek didn't score. Still, was a big time Sek fan after that Summer league game. -

I'm a big Tarin Fan...just like his size. I love Benny and his energy, but 6'2" trumps 5'8" all day. Tarin is built kind of like Sek Henry but has a smoother game, IMO. He's pretty poised for a true freshman, and I think he has a LOT of potential. I think he starts pretty soon. -

FWIW I think they are counting the points TP scored at Texas Tech as a freshman. But he will get over 1,000 in 2 seasons at NU. I believe he scored about 88 points his frosh year total...so he definitely filled up the majority while a Husker. He also cold cocked Connor Teahan from KU during a game his frosh year....saw it on youtube. -

Seth Greenberg has a surprisingly accurate analysis of our team and area's that we need to improve in. His take on Benny was pretty spot on. -

Mixed bag. A few, maybe a couple, were ready to play big time Big 10 basketball. The rest tucked from the get and their demeanor reminded me of what I used to see with Barry and Doc's teams on the road.... -

Laughable that Fuller is in now....with 2:25 left and down big. Fuller's lack of defense wasn't going to prevent us from being down 20, but his offense could've helped -

David gives us all he's got. That's all we can ask for. I don't disagree, I just believe an upgrade at his position will go a LONG ways towards our progression as a team. -
coach Miles going to ask this question to Dave tonight again?

Ed Morrow can't replace Dave fast enough....I know that's emotion typing, but I believe it's true. David is so limited. -
If we are going to lose to Creighton, I'd rather them be at the bottom of the conference vs. winning the Big East, the payoff of making the loss not as "bad" isn't nearly equal to hearing from Bluejay nation, Bluejay co-workers, Bluejay alums, a KMTV bald dude, and Pivovar all season long...and off-season, and next year's pre-season....chills.

Having a young boy that is such a huge Husker Hoops fan, that play Avery came up with made my day, shoot, my week. Tremendous news for the Harriman family and Husker Hoops
