Press Break/Late game rotation and end game defense
royalfan replied to royalfan's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Lesilie was in for Parker a whole bunch in the last two minutes against press break. Not sure specifically when that may have changed or if it did, but if did, which I didn't notice on last couple of possessions then Miles must have figured it out. -
Press Break/Late game rotation and end game defense

So we have determined that Parker ideally shouldn't be in there. I think I agree with that after further thought. I know I do. T. Smith was already in the game. I am talking about L. Smith. I don't think he is our best press break option available and that was my point. Not talking about T. Smith. While has has had some problems against the press break also, he is a much better option than Parker, I agree. But still not sure Parker doesn't give us a better chance to break a press and make free throws than L. Smith. -

That makes some sense for sure regarding size. Do you think L. Smith is a better option? -

Just not Izzo's preferred method of coaching style is the answer I think. Miles uncomfortable with it also. Bugs me a little bit. I think having it in the package to occassionally try to crank up the energy level would be a good thing. Annoyance pressure also should not result in leak outs. This is one thing I disagree with both coaches on to an extent. -
I understand why we would bring Parker in for Tai on defense. Those reasons seem pretty self explanatory. My question is why was Parker leaving on offense to try to break the press while Leslee was staying in the ballgame. Seems obvious that they will either foul or get a steal. If they foul, we can bring Smith right back in for Tai, ending up with the same defensive rotation. Seems like there is a little better chance of not getting it stolen with Parker in. There has to be a reason, can someone enlighten me on what that might be? I would want one of my best ball handlers in over one of my worst I think. I have also noticed a little bid of a bad pattern under Miles regarding late game defense with a lead. We take it to extreme measures of going away from our typical pack line defense it seems. We take it to extremes to not allow 3's which ends up allowing them anyway, and worse creates all sorts of driving lines and we are so scared to foul it results in such easy baskets. We must clean this up before we take a bad loss because of it. Think Ohio St last year in tourney. They would just attack every time and with a lead we don't seem to resist very much. Miles needs to get that fixed IMO. Anyway, these were a couple things that bothered me yesterday and wanted to see what others think about these issues or potentially them being non issues.

Have been trying unsuccessfully to find any Big 10 rules on the issue. I have not yet seen anything that suggests there is even the possibility of a suspension, let alone a guaranteed one. No news could potentially be good news as it doesn't seem to be an easy find on the internet regarding a guaranteed suspension, but I am admittedly probably just a 6 or 7 out of ten on interenet searching. -

The odds of winning at Michigan and Minny are not real good. If we can do that I think we will have a hell of a chance to dance as that will likely mean we have turned a corner in our actual play. -

I do think you are confusing it with football potentially. It appears from what I can gather that there is no automatic suspension of any kind. Conferences can opt to suspend though if they choose, as happened to Harrell of Lousiville last year. -
Listened to the game on the way to Lincoln. The Hawkeye broadcast said stinger repeatedly. Did not sound like a long term injury according to them, but I have not checked for updates in the several hours since.

Miles presser he said he thought suspensions only happened for fighting if I understood him correctly. -

Yeah that is a move that is much more common in the NBA. You don't see that every day in college. Speeks to the profit potential we have in him. Need to to continue to surface. -
Think Wisconsin win is better in grand scheme of things. We play them twice and Michigan once so seems RPI benefits dictate Wisconsin win.

About spit my soda all over the screen when i just read that Hanson would average 20-20 if he played in the Valley, and that Creightion plays in the best league in America now. You talk about "Debluesional."

That article is asinine. Hollins needs to grow a brain. Loose rims help shots go in numnuts. -

Yep Benny was huge once again. We need him to continue to make an impact even though our defensive scheme makes him a bit less usefull this year IMO. -

Seemed Rivers played a lot more than that to me as well. He gave some decent minutes. We are in better shape in general if he can play limited minutes, but Miles has to do what he trusts as well. -
Little off track but I think our best team next year is going to be Petteway Shields White Pitchford and ?. And Miles is going to have so many ways to go based on the situation. I think that team is long and athletic enought to allow for Watson or Smith to play in it. And we can go to Morrow if need be for boardwork. And Parker if defensive spark needed. But the core is in good shape if Petteway comes back. Will be well equipped to switch ball screens with waves of good athletes. Now lets figure out this year.

Can I get a ruling on something, please?

Good point. They are tough to officiate as they are well drilled at taking advantage of the way it is being called. Very good at drawing minor contact. And they play an aggressive brand of defense which is also tough to officiate. -

The one that I thought was a joke was when Shields got a rebound fell to the floor and minny got called for a foul. Because the minny guy fell with Shields. Yes that is definately exhibit A. -

Lets try to recall the UMASS game last year when describing the worst officiating ever. This rivaled that however. -

It is fine as long as it is not insinuated that we got completely jobbed by it. There were some very important calls down the stretch that we got as well. But obvioulsy it was not a well officated game in general.
