No. 16 Huskers Take on No. 19 Purdue for Share of Big Ten Title

The No. 16 Nebraska women’s basketball team will play for at least a share of the Big Ten title while facing No. 19 Purdue on the Boilermakers’ Senior Day in a top-20 showdown on Sunday.

Tip-off between the Huskers and Boilermakers is set for 1 p.m.

The Huskers will be playing in a conference title game for the third straight season as a member of the Big Ten. Nebraska closed February with a perfect 8-0 record, stretching its February winning streak to 16 games. NU’s last February loss came at Michigan State in February 2012.

Nebraska has unleashed nine straight wins after posting a 72-65 victory over Illinois last Thursday. The Huskers opened the week by rolling to a 94-74 victory over No. 8 Penn State.

Overall, NU has outscored the opposition 77.3-63.4 during the nine-game winning streak, while posting a plus-3.9 rebounding margin and a plus-2.9 turnover margin. The Huskers are shooting 47.1 percent from the field, 42.2 percent from three-point range and 79.8 percent at the free throw line. NU’s assist-to-turnover ratio during the streak is 166-to-92 (1.8).

Purdue head into Sunday’s Senior Day game at Mackey Arena trying to lock up a top-four seed at next week’s Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis. The Boilermakers are tied with Iowa for fourth in the Big Ten standings at 10-5, but Purdue owns the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Hawkeyes thanks to a 74-73 win in West Lafayette.

Purdue joins the Huskers as the hottest teams in the Big Ten. The Boilermakers have won five straight games since losing senior point guard KK Houser to a season-ending ACL injury.

In Big Ten play, Purdue is shooting just 40.1 percent from the field, but has hit a sizzling 37 percent from long range, while knocking down 6.3 threes per game. Overall, Purdue is the second-best free throw shooting team in the Big Ten (.784), trailing only Nebraska (.786). The Boilermakers own a plus-4.6 rebound margin and a plus-0.5 turnover margin in league play. Purdue has outscored Big Ten foes, 73.7-67.1.

However, over the last five games Purdue has been more dominant, averaging 69.6 points, while allowing just 56.6 points per contest (+13.0 ppg). The Boilermakers also carry a plus-6.4 rebound margin and a plus-1.6 turnover margin the last five games.

Purdue leads the all-time series with Nebraska 4-1.

We stink at defending the 3. Third year in a row chance to win either regular season or tournament and can't seem to finish. Yori needs to change game plans when it comes to playing Purdue, cause what they do don't work!!!!!

Disagree that Nebraska innately struggles to guard it. It may seem that way, but it's to compensate for what Nebraska sometimes lacks in interior defense.

It's really Hooper, Cady and Havers as interior defenders, and that's it. Next year, adding Page and Washington, I think you'll see a more dynamic interior defense with Cady, Havers, Page and Washington.

I really don't think Havers is that far away. She has to log more minutes, though, and both practice and receive patience.

I was thinking they also have a bigger body coming from Washington state?  Name is Chandler?
