I think Canada has a UConn commit that we were recruiting for a  time.  Have to go look back at the 2015 thread but there was a good baller from Canuck land and I believe UConn got her.  Is Kia Nurse the name?

Edited:  Nvmnd.  There was a Kia Nurse we were recruiting from Canada who wound up committing to UConn, but she was in the 2014 class, not the 2015 class.

We did have a Canuck come visit us for 2015, though, and she might have made their U18 Nat team.

Who is the USA coach? She has immense talent to work with but seems to rely on that talent and athleticism. Poor defense generally from our team. Canada has kept it within reach with much less talent but better schemes and execution. Guess we'll probably win but I hate to watch this kind of basketball.

I can 't think of her name but I think she coach's South Carolina Game Cocks. Dawn Staley is the coach and she does coach at South Carolina

I turned off the game at the end of the 3rd. We were winning handily so I guess that shows how much I know about coaching basketball. I would still prefer Coach Yori any day.

No, we didin't seem to have an offensive scheme...just kinda street ball. And yes, poor defense most of the game. Lots of sloppy turnovers. And we still don't cover the three, or the drives to the basket. (where Canada got lots of points....3's and drives)

We weren't prepared for the rough defense (international style) of Canada....the low body blocks by Canada threw us off for at least the first half.

As said, Canada looked much more prepared and organized than USA.  Maybe they've been together alot longer, and played lot's of preliminary games.

Staley does seem to have a lower tolerance for a mistake by some...but the overall talent did get it done and that's what the team is there for I guess.

(this is all just my biased opinions of course  :P )

I watched 3 quarters of the game. The USA coach favors an up tempo style and players with loads of athleticism. Not much discipline either on offense or defense. She has Jess playing a true low post role, with a very athletic girl starting ahead of Jess. It is clear that Jess is not completely comfortable with this role. Her back to the basket moves are just OK. She seems much more comfortable facing the basket and either shooting mid range jumpers or attacking the basket. This should be good experience for her to learn the low post but also illustrates in my mind that this coach is not good at playing players to their strengths.

Quite honestly I wonder how Jess made the team with the style of play that is being instilled here. And you are right M&R Jess didn't look like she was comfortable playing with back to basket. She was also in foul trouble all night .

My impression was that if the coach would change Jess' role to more of a face up 4, she would dominate. But sometimes it is good to learn a different role and pick up some new skills. I hope this is the case for Jess.

Well it definitely won't hurt in the long run.

Staley obviously told Jess, she should play more of the back to the basket stuff.    Staley plays both forwards kind of like posts, with their back to the basket, along the lane.

Staley's the coach so......

Turner and Wilson are Staley's combo favorites on the low side. Deservedly so probably, very experienced in International play, and are athletic.

But, Jess is put into the low spot, when that isn't really her best position, with her back to the basket. She is more versatile.

Jess was the first off the bench yesterday.....so Staley recognizes Jess can play. Just wish Staley would let Jess free to play her game.

Jess is a newbie at USA play, so her exposure to international experience will be huge...even if not in her particulaly best position. Just the exposure to the higher level of play will pay dividends for Jess. She'll come out of this a better player.

There was an article interviewing Jess after she got home, in the OWH yesterday. But I can't find it on line. ??

Jess was really pumped about the whole thing. Has hopes of making the USA team next year (will have to try out again)

Great experience, loved meeting and playing with all the other girls.
