A friend of mind was real upset after the loss last night and just went off.  He made some comments about the coaches roster management and player development which I thought were interesting and wanted to get some discussion going.

I am only able to watch about 25% of the games on TV.  I was not the team manager in high school.  I don't have the crucial experience coaching youth basketball that is critical to commenting upon our coaches shortcomings, so I ask:

Do the coaches pull players aside during the game and discuss mistakes/what they should do, and then put them right back in?

For example, is Tai pulled/counseled, and put right back on the floor when he is too passive?

Are Petteway and Biggs pulled and counseled about poor decisions resulting in turnovers/ or court behavior?

Does MIles try and implore Shields to get more vocal as a team leader?

If the coaches are not, would it help players develop, and the team develop, if they coaches did?

Who should be on the floor in crunch time?  Smith, Shields, Petteway, Gallegos, and ?

Coach talked a little about this in his press conference this week.  And the answer is basically, yes.

Posted

Plus Miles talked about the week before OSU how they had a lot of "heart to hearts" with the players and explaining their roles to all of the guys.

I trust Miles system and what he is doing.  The biggest concern with a young team is keeping them focused and playing for one another.

I don't think those things are necessary in order to comment about our coaches' shortcomings.

And even if you had those things, I'm not sure that would qualify you to necessarily offer an informed opinion.

And even without those things, I think you could still offer an informed opinion because other bases of knowledge will sometimes come into play.

Allow me to offer a hypothetical example:

Let's say we're in a crucial game against an upper division B1G foe and we're in a tight game through halftime.  And let's say in the 2nd half, Petteway plays a few minutes, doesn't do anything special, and then takes a seat on the bench for several minutes while the other team goes on a run.  Then Miles puts him back in for a few minutes more during which we climb back into it, and then Miles pulls him for the rest of the game and the other team then goes on one more run to put the game away.

The meltdown from all the highly-credentialed message board posters on this forum would be epic.  What an idiot our coach is.  Can't manage his talent.  Has no sensible substitution pattern.  Sitting our best player for no apparent reason.  We would have won the game if that idiot coach hadn't benched our best player during crucial parts of the game when the other team went on their run.  Jeesh, how did we get saddled with such an idiot for a coach?

But, let's say there was something more going on that the general public wasn't aware of.  Let's say Petteway had caught a touch of the flue, told the coach he thought he'd give it a try to play that game and just got wiped out playing in the first half and took himself out in the 2nd half and told Coach Miles he was feeling too weak to go back in.  Let's just say.  Hypothetically.

Would that additional information alter your perspective on what an idiot our coach is?

Sometimes the decisions the coaching staff makes might not be readily apparent to an outsider.  Insiders, whether they coached or not, might be aware of relevant information that the general public doesn't know about.

Sometimes, you don't have all the data to second-guess decisions that were made.  And what you have to say about something, while certainly appropriate for message board discussion, still needs to be taken with a grain of salt.  In other words, say what you want but, unless you were a fly on the wall, your conclusions might not be based on all the necessary factual information.

Take your post, for example.  It implies the assumption that Miles isn't taking guys aside, coaching them up, and putting them back in games.  Yes, he's doing that.  Sometimes he doesn't even take them out of games to do it.  Sometimes, he just calls them over while someone else is shooting freethrows to give them some extra coaching.  That small bit of information that is available only to people who have watched the games makes all the difference in the world in answering your question, right?

So, imagine how much information we don't know, stuff that takes place behind closed doors, would answer so many other questions.  So, criticize the coach all you want.

I was not implying Miles is/was not doing that;  I don't know.  From the few games I have been able to watch, I can't tell what's happening on the bench.   But its good to know that this is happening with such a young team.  Hopefully we see this team develop before our eyes from now thru next preseason, and we make some noise in the Big 10 schedule next year.  I don't expect us to go Dancing next year, but hope we do in 2016.
