Much better effort tonight.  New Mexico State is a very good hitting team according to the stats and they have 1 hit in 8 innings.  The defense has 0 errors.  New Mexico State made mistakes in the field and we took advantage.

I spoke too soon on the good pitching.  7 walks in a 12 - 0 game?  How is that possible?

Wow.  What an embarrassment that 9th inning turned out to be.  A few pitchers are going to find it hard to get many innings.

 

All in all a good game.  Since the TCU series ended, our starting pitching has been lights out.  We are 3 - 1 with a 1.36 ERA  We've walked 14 and struck out 47.  We are averaging 5 2/3 innings per outing.  Up to the end of the TCU series, we were 0 - 5 with a 10.80 ERA.  We walked 16 and struck out 25.  We averaged 2 2/3 innings per outing.

Well, it's good to be 6-9, I guess, since NU is 2-0 at home. Hope to make hay these next 5 games.

Our pitching staff is okay.  We have 3 decent starters for the weekend.  Frank, Perry, and Shay.  McCarville for midweek.  I'm thinking Bragg is in line for the 2nd midweek starter.  Our bullpen is also decent when we use our normal guys.  Olson, Martin, Hood are solid.  Gomes had one bad outing.  We need our starters to keep getting us to the 6th and 7th innings.  Losing Bunz hurts.

I would have liked it better if he would have been used in the 9th yesterday and had Bragg start today.  Less pressure and needs some confidence.

I am still not convinced. 

If we say level 3 is okay, level 5 is competitive in the Big Ten, level 8 is the capability to win the Big Ten and a 10 is winning games in the NCAA tournament...then we are 3-4 (okay) right now.  

Bottom line, to meet preseason expectations, we have a ways to go. We do have some pieces to make it happen, we will hope for some exponential growth, sooner rather than later.
