chuck.bentjen Posted November 8, 2016 Report Posted November 8, 2016 (edited) After watching the first game, I will stand by my earlier analysis that RCJ comes to Nebraska as an underrated player. With her presence and leadership, it will be hard to keep her off the court. She was out there barking orders in a way that was reminiscent of 00s. I only look for her to get better. Nicea was the other freshman who really impressed me. She is very athletic and plays very hard. Edited November 9, 2016 by chuck.bentjen Correct misspelling Red Don and Actualfacts1 2 Quote
caveman Posted November 8, 2016 Report Posted November 8, 2016 Watching the game they were the two bright spots. Nicea especially, she should be a starter in short order. Riley seemed to be the best option at the point. I was disappointed with the play of 3 players that have been in the program for a while. I will not mention any names associated with anything negative. Actualfacts1 and chuck.bentjen 2 Quote
Fastbreaker Posted November 8, 2016 Report Posted November 8, 2016 We shall see I guess. I have seen a lot of exhibition game heroes. For example check out this little snippet from Hannah Tvrdy's first game. Freshman guard Hannah Tvrdy (Seward, Neb.) was equally as impressive, earning a start in her first career game and scoring 14 points to lead the Husker backcourt. She hit 6-of-9 shots from the field, including a three-pointer, while adding four rebounds, a steal and two assists without a turnover. I hope all the newcomers have great success. You need to give the others a chance. And I would not be disappointed in the returners that you would not name, but we all know who you are talking about. They are learning a new system just like the freshmen. We almost lost to a D-II school. That is not good. Everyone on the team has a lot of work to do. Five games in eleven days starting Saturday. Four games in the WNIT and Omaha who is looking pretty salty this year. We could easily lose every one of them. Hope not though. Quote
redsteve Posted November 8, 2016 Report Posted November 8, 2016 (edited) Really early to predict much at all. But it's possible for a couple of the freshman to "push" a veteran player. Not unusual. In some ways the new player doesn't have to "unlearn" from previous years, so it levels out the playing field to some extent, and theoretically makes them somewhat even to begin with. RJC may be underrated in recruiting circles, but she's Nebraska's top H.S. player from last year. She's comfortable with Coach Amy, having already been recruited by her, and RJC's played with Jess in H.S....so has a little early advantage. If Nicea get up to speed quickly......great ! We need athletes for sure. Nicea's speed and agility are right up Coach Amy's alley. This is already fun Edited November 8, 2016 by redsteve mwm89, Actualfacts1 and Red Don 3 Quote

Just to clarify -- I think all the newcomers are going to be good players. I was very impressed with Southwest Baptist. They came to play, and they were a scrappy team. I was somewhat disappointed in our transition game. I thought we'd be running and gunning a lot more than we actually did. But, I give some credit to SWB for playing very good defense and getting back. We certainly do have a lot of work to do, and it could be a long season. But, the future looks pretty bright. Quote

Yeah, that's a very impressive SW Baptist team that lost 3 times to UNK last year, the last time by 29 points. And just whose skill set at guard fits "run and gun", and why? Norm Peterson 1 Quote
HUD Posted November 9, 2016 Report Posted November 9, 2016 I was at the game and was impressed by the play and hustle of a couple of SW Baptist guards. I think they came in to exploit a current weakness with our young guards and new system. As far as being able to run a good fast break I think our coach and Jess explained it quite well. Everybody needs to be on the same page and that was evident that we weren't. I would be more worried if this happens further into the system. Quote
redsteve Posted November 9, 2016 Report Posted November 9, 2016 (edited) Hey, if you like... SW Baptist got beat by two good NU starters almost by them selves, (and some back up) and the rest were H.S. kids that practiced together for a few weeks, that had played less than one college game. So, at this point I'm not so concerned about what some other team did last year. And being realistic....didn't really expect much more than what we saw... the very first game out of the gate, with the lack of experience we have now. Our time will come, ...getting there is all I'm concerned with for now Edited November 9, 2016 by redsteve Noah121 and HUD 2 Quote

We have some guards who can run and we have some shooters. Based on the stuff Williams ran in the past and her comments, I thought we'd be doing more of that. For heaven's sake, I made some observations about a couple of freshman I thought did well in their first game and that SWB played hard and I'm chastised? Maybe it was a mistake to come back on board.
