Wasn't able to take in the game....other stuff going on today. I expect the seniors looked prety well ahead of the young ones. Anyone have some highlights of the game ?.....which of the newbies shows geting ready to play maybe the quickest? Overall impressions? Or is just too soon to see?
-
Well let me get the ball rolling Row 6, Do you think we're going to miss JHoop ? DUH I thought it was interesting that Anya would start ahead of Havers, but I guess the coaches know what they have in Havers. Probably right....just trying to get as many new feet (Kalenta) on the floor.... as soon as possible. Yori wants rebounders, and Kalenta was a good rebounder in JC......12 or so per game. But just had nose surgery...nose might be a little tender....(had one my self playing football)
-
Finally !.........start of the season. Other sites list Kalenta as starting, but since she got her nose broken by Washington's elbow....maybe Havers will start instead. Kalenta must have been doing pretty well in practice to even get considered to start. But regardless, it's very early and more games to get some floor time for the freshman. Wayne State has a pretty good record in their division..lost a couple of good ones to graduation.
-
This is certainly the time to do some experimenting ....it will sure be interesting as the "pre season" goes on and see how the line up will all shake out...probably not fully completed even in the early games. Not much time to waste here on out. It's great to see Cady step up and take over as "the" team leader. It is a progression that.... Yori probably has asked Cady to assume the lead. And Emmily has taken charge
-
So will Simon get added ? Or will it stay the same...6th. (didn't see Simon listed on their overall list (unless I missed it))...but she's been on other recruitment lists. Simion would make all 4 of the recruits over 6-1 (and she looks taller than 6-1 in person) Man ..what a class !!
-
The photo is from straight on....Page looks close to the same as Kalenta (who is supposed to be 6-3), and not too much shorter than Havers. Cady is 6-2, and appears to be at least an inch shorter than Page. So, now at least, Page must be real close to 6-3 ? ...and growing ? Her little sister was a bit taller last year in HS.....maybe they'll both grow some more.
-
Yes...she's got to get some playing time together & experience created not only for this year, but for next year(s) also. I think she also mentioned as many as 5 could play this year. We could see a deeper bench (than last year) getting on the court as time goes on. Makes me think that her thoughts were with just seeing the newbies on the court together a few times....so there must be some talent that can be seen now..... not to mention they have another month or so to "meld" together.

Good stuff about how the team will blend together for next season. Yori had some good things about Chandler Smith. http://journalstar.com/sports/huskers/womens-basketball/nu-women-s-basketball-notebook-huskers-begin-to-try-to/article_625c91bd-ce99-54c1-9751-033a97db15b7.html ***Looks like this is already posted on another thread But here's another from todays OWH http://www.omaha.com/huskers/connie-yori-likes-husker-newcomers-but-they-have-much-to/article_47b1dacc-2ed2-5960-86bb-415015a33fb0.html

Yahoooooo !!!! Go ladies !!!!!!

In a lot of ways T make sense for pros. Her quickness and speed offensively is everything in WNBA...plus she can defend because of the same quickness and speed. Might depend on how she can score this year ...consistently. Her 3 shooting is an eye opener when she gets on a hot streak. If she can't score 10 ppg or so in pros, pretty much no player stays...particularly guards. 3 shooters get a place on the team, no matter the age group, mens or womens, etc etc Cady...I quess we'll see how she does this year...kind of out of the shadow of Hoops. She is probably a bit undersized for post play in WNBA. Not sure she has the floor game needed for pros. Hopefully she will get the chance to play more 4/power forward this year, and show she has more versatility on the court, since there should be more help inside this coming year. If heart and determintion count for much...she's at the head of the class.

Anyone now if she was here Miami weekend? Got my fingers crossed
-
Hum.... We do have 4 returning starters, and our last years 6th player off the bench is back...plus maybe one of the best recruiting classes ever... ...but we lose an All American....and I kinda feel like we'll get Hooper's points out of Havers and the much deeper bench. ...so my crystal ball says about 15 too. (well at least in the 13 to 17 range....is that cheating?)
-
Kalenta may be the one I'm really interested to see play, in the sense that she may be able to contribute right away......particularly inside. She just has more background and experience, ....beyond high school... than any of the new players. I'm certain there will be other "newbies" that will see playing time fairly soon too, but Kalenta may have a step or so ahead in terms of getting with the program. We should easily have more 4 & 5 bench than last year. Just a stronger bench than we've had for a while...overall.

Nice article in OWH this morning about Kalenta. Her mother played on USSR team, and her father is a coach. Has a brother 6-8 that also played. She had a chance to play professionally in Europe, but instead wanted to get her pharmacy degree, and going to the US to college was the way she could accomplish it. Yori had some good stuff to say. http://www.omaha.com/huskers/fervor-for-nebraska-s-kalenta/article_b2ad8562-1675-53d5-9f7e-e430df72aea9.html

Nancy's mom played for G'Tech in the 80s and might still be one of their all-time leading scorers. Her mom isn't the same lady as the Baylor coach. Nancy, though tall, is no Brittany Griner. (I can't believe I'm typing this.) Yeah, Nancy has a lot going for her, most of all height. But she's a twig and she doesn't appear to have the frame to carry a lot of extra weight. In other words, if she gets bigger, she's not going to be able to move better with it. As it is, she's too slight and spindly to hold her ground in the low blocks; instead, she's liable to get pushed around a lot. I realize she'll make up for a lot of that just by being so tall, and she does run pretty well. She has a good, soft touch on her shots. But I question whether she'll ever have the coordination, strength and mass to be the kind of low-post force that Griner was. Which is not to say that Nancy won't be a good college player. But she won't be on the same level as Griner, IMO. The young Mulkey is only ..what 10th grade ? As said she might be behind the progress curve....of someone like Griner. Griner's one in 10 million? Griner is 6, 7, 8 years older and been through college and the associated strength and conditioning. Mulkey has a long way to go...both growing and "filling into" her shoes. If she ever stops growing taller, then she'll be able to fill out a bit. Who knows when. But her vodeo show's she pretty well coordinated at this stage...but she's still just a kid...dosen't know how be a little nasty in her play yet. Got a great role model in her mom....a college player herself. Her baby brother was/is about 6-8 as an 8th grader.

Ugly stuff ....if true... .....law suits to follow ?

SIAP: Anya Kalenta -- Hall of Fame Jersey
redsteve replied to Norm Peterson's topic in Row 6 Seat 10
I'm pretty sure NU (Shimmy ?) went and watched Kalenta play.....so she was recruited after seeing her playing in person. As said, it might be the case, that she was only there for one year, and some others didn't know about her...or at least didn't do their homework. She was in Fla the year before...certainly not on the midwest radar. And, I've mentioned before, she has more incentive to do well and work hard, more so, than the average H S grad......she left her home country and came to the US to play basketball. (which is enabling her to get her degree in Pharmacy, as I recall.) Pretty important stuff to her no doubt. .....Talk about sink or swim. Isn't she suppose to be here about now? -
SIAP: Anya Kalenta -- Hall of Fame Jersey

Couldn't get that link above to work http://govutrailblazers.com/articles/05-14/vu-soph-anya-kalenta%E2%80%99s-jersey-requested-women%E2%80%99s-basketball-hall-fame A lot of the same stuff is in both articles. (read the first link late today) after finally getting Norms link to be happy with my computer. “She never seemed to have an off-day in practice and she led by example with hard work and a love for the game,” he added. “With her work ethic, I know she’s going to be successful at Nebraska and she’ll certainly enjoy this opportunity to play in the Big 10.” Isn't she suppose to get here this weekend? Got some nice credentials. Sure looks good on paper. Hope she gets up to speed quickly and see how she can contribute to the already strong new group of girls. -
You're absolutely right on the Elite 8 talent. Which makes in my opinion the 2016 class the most important class yet. If the Huskers can amass another top 10 class they could be considered Final 4 talent worthy. How NU does in games this coming season, will help determine, the nature of the 2016 recruiting class. We win like last year, and maybe win the BIG and/or tourney, and end up in the Top 15 ranked, and the next few recruiting classes could be extreemly good. Those are some big hurdles to clear though. One of the keys to the next few seasons will be how the 2014 recruiting class develops. We lose 4 starters after this coming season, so the pressure will be on, to be ready, and competive for the 2015 season. That's only one year to develope. Shepard coming aboard in 2015 will probably be an automatic starter....but it could take a part of the season to learn Yoris plan for her, and get into the flow of the rest of the team. The other incoming 2015 kids will have no experience at the college level. Kind of looks like this current squad is pretty well set, in terms of very substantial experience playing together, and very good freshman to add to the mix. But 2015 wiil be a different story...lots of new blood and a fairly inexpericed squad...even though they have tremendous potential. Going to be interesting

There was an article interviewing Jess after she got home, in the OWH yesterday. But I can't find it on line. ?? Jess was really pumped about the whole thing. Has hopes of making the USA team next year (will have to try out again) Great experience, loved meeting and playing with all the other girls. Wants to get to work right away ....and just get better. ***************************** Found it: http://www.neprepzone.com/sports/fremont-star-jessica-shepard-savors-time-with-u-s-team/article_c62d9191-bfc5-5024-8b59-092524b03ca8.html

True dat. I think it would be fun to walk around downtown with Allie Havers while she's wearing 3 inch heels. I suspect she'd have to practice the whole heel-walking thing, though. depends on her shoe size. My wife being 6'5'' and wearing mens size 14 they dont make high heels in that size. What she has to do is order shoes from drag queen websites for men for any of those types of shoes.

Anybody know if she's played any summer ball?

OK....well back to business. Anyone heard if Kalenta has finally arrived?
