Juwan is not blocking out whatsoever. Illinois has 50 rebounds. Inexcusable -

We’ve had sooo many good looks tonight. Just not making any of them outside the lane. -

I haven’t been this frustrated with the officiating in awhile. They are not calling the same contact on both ends. We shouldn’t have twice as many fouls as Illinois right now. -

Connor had a good block out. Got pulled down to the ground, then got called for the foul. -

Jeff Anderson really sucks. The inconsistency on calling and not calling illegal screens in the Big Ten is maddening. -

My underrated moment was in the first half when we cut it to 3 and had the momentum. Then Brice came back in the game and had two quick lazy turnovers and a lapse on defense. It was pretty much over after that. During this losing skid he's made so many negative game changing plays. A team shouldn't be better with their best offensive player on the bench, but that's where we're at. Juwan doesn't get a pass either. A lot of talk about him missing layups, but his on-ball perimeter defense and defensive rebounding has been really bad this year (even in December). I'm not buying the injury or physical limitation theory. He still jumps high when he decides to and pushes people around when he decides to. He just doesn't decide to do those things very often this year. He's often standing straight legged on defense. -

So disheartening. I thought our first 9 conference games would be a tough stretch. But as long as we kept our head above water through the Wisconsin game we'd be ok because the last 11 look pretty favorable to go on a nice run, as we did the last two seasons. Unfortunately, we seem to be a completely broken team and nothing is going well on either end of the court. We have poor leadership on the floor and our coaches haven't figured out how to push the right buttons. If we could somehow figure it out, there are a whole lot of winnable games left on the schedule (6 homes games and the 5 road games are collectively "easier" than the first 5 conference road games). But it's hard to have any faith right now. -

Brice is really freaking killing us on both ends. This would be a one possession game if he never came back in the game. -

Three unguarded 3s in Wisconsin’s first 5 possessions. They weren’t even moving the ball. Tonje just standing there wide open. -
He’s really only had two bad conference games shooting wise. 0-6 vs UCLA and 0-2 vs Michigan State. In the other games he’s shooting 44.4%. Iowa and Purdue were below average games for him, but he shot 50% or higher in each of the other four conference games. I don’t really like continuing to compare the two players, but looking at game logs that’s better consistency shooting the ball than Keisei (while shooting the exact same volume of attempts).

No. There’s been multiple games now where his perimeter defense was better than other players who should be much better defensively than Connor. We’re better overall with him on the court.

I don’t think Saint Thomas would make this team better. He’s not a good shooter, not a good ball handler and is turnover prone. He’s big and physical, but that’s not really what we need. -

If Louisville finishes the year strong Chucky might end up an all-american. Leading the team in points, assists and steals. Leading the ACC in assists and steals. Best thing he ever did for himself was leave Wisconsin. -

The Big Ten has a good reputation this year but the eye test says we're losing to some pretty mediocre teams. Rutgers plays garbage basketball. That USC team lost to St. Mary's by like 40 on a neutral court. We're a far cry from where we were 1 month ago. During our hot streak in Dec. our coaches referred to last year's identity of "pretty offense" almost as if it was a bad thing. Give me pretty offense over whatever we are right now. I don't think our defense is doing anything well at this point. The open threes are obvious, but it starts with not being able to keep ball handlers out of the lane. The stand still, catch and shoot three off a kick out is the most efficient shot in college basketball. And teams are getting a lot of those. We don't get any of those because 1. we don't have a player who can consistently get into the teeth of the defense without getting stripped and/or falling down and 2. we only have two shooters in the rotation - one will always be blanketed and the other has to be ball dominant on this team because Hoiberg can't trust his point guards. We also aren't securing defensive rebounds, even against smaller teams. I'm gonna go watch some Rienk Mast highlights. -

Brice should’ve attacked immediately. They don’t want to foul. 19 seconds can be many possessions in college basketball. Just wasted 12 seconds -

He’s earned a shot to start. The starting lineup has struggled with turnovers. Way too many wasted possessions early in games. Ulis has 9 turnovers in 200+ minutes. He plays with energy, something the first group has lacked to start games. He and Sam are really the only two who are consistently closing out to three point shooters right now. -
Purdue made 3 threes tonight against Ohio State. Blew a 16 point lead at home. Iowa is losing to Minnesota by double digits at home. There seem to be more Big Ten home team losses this year than normal.

Some positives. Sam Hoiberg: In the last 7 games he's 12/15 from the field and 6/8 from three. Also had 20 assists to 8 turnovers, and 8 steals. He only played 16 minutes today and 17 minutes against Rutgers. On the season he's now shooting 54% from the field, 47% from three and 82% from the line. He's improved as a secondary ball handler. And still doing all the little things that don't show up in the box score. Maybe needs to play more. Andrew Morgan. Should start playing more than his 17 mpg. Ahron Ulis. 10 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover (that was arguably Brice's fault). Played good defense and handled the full court pressure very well. We seem to still be struggling to figure out what Berke is in the offense. But his shooting is improved. In the last 7 games he's 10/21 from three. Now up to 35% on the season. Connor is still shooting the ball with confidence and shooting it well. 41% on the year on high volume. He's still moving relentlessly off the ball. IMO it's on his teammates and coaches to get him more shots in rhythm. Still thinking we need to prioritize offense more. We do have guys who can make shots. Play the guys listed above, along with Brice and Juwan. When this team is making shots, the defense amps up. That's not how it should be with a team who is supposed to have a defensive identity, but it is what it is. Last year at this time, we had a much, much better defense than we do right now, while playing guys who should be negative individual defenders (Mast, CJ, Keisei). Prioritize shot making, and the momentum and defense will follow. -

We do too many things that good teams with good players don't do. When your best players aren't solid and reliable, that's a bad deal. I can't imagine we'll play another team that's more disinterested and less cohesive than Maryland this year. We needed this one. -

We throw passes to teammates who aren’t even somewhat open. Almost every possession. Maryland came out looking slow and sleepy. Feels like a missed opportunity already
