I was listening to some pundits talk about the bubble teams and one of them articulated it well in my opinion. He basically said that all bubble teams are exactly that. Bubble teams. Every single one of them have a reason to be left out of the tournament. That's why they're bubble teams. The ones that stand out are the ones who have reasons to be IN the tournament. They all have flaws, but the ones that have a reason to be in the tournament are the ones that have quality wins on the resume. We are that team. Just need to do some work to avoid or minimize the bad losses.

I recognized this during the game too. Haven't had one of those in awhile. Typically, we would find ourselves playing down to the level of competition and just couldn't keep a consistent gap against our opponents. Good change of pace for a bit on a Saturday.

Terrible, terrible, news to hear out of Kansas City right now.

I'll agree with the original premise, but contend for a different reason. The committee absolutely loves a Round of 32 storyline. Not saying they blatantly seed accordingly, but if given the opportunity they'll find a way to pair matchups of interest in that same part of the bracket.

Based on the way they came out to start the Michigan game, against a team that doesn't add much value to us other than another one in the win column, I feel like this team knows they need to win (and win handily) against these teams they must beat. That gives me some confidence as we get latter into February. We can't erase the bad losses, but let's take care of business going forward.

Some of the reasons why the metrics aren't fully in our favor: weak nonconference, losing so much on the road, when we lose we tend to lose big.

One thing people aren't considering right now is also our conference standing. No, not for selection purposes. Depending on where we finish in the regular season, it's possible we'd play one of the bottom four teams in the conference. Yet again, not another resume builder. So it puts more pressure on us to close out the regular season without having to rely on a Big Ten tournament run. We'd likely need a quarterfinal win to really solidify ourselves if we're on the bubble at that point.

Right. All heuristics and oversimplifying. But one way to think about it: With a softer schedule to close out the season, sure, that means we have a better path than other bubble teams to get those wins. But bubble teams winning some big matchups gives them a 2x boost to their win. In the same vein, any loss we have that we were expected to win will hurt us 2x more. The key: we absolutely need to win those games we're expected to win. Otherwise, we need to offset that with more road wins and/or some Big Ten tournament wins.
