HHCC Game #11 - vs. Gardner-Webb (Dec. 18, 1:00 PM CST)
bball23 replied to HuskerFever's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
NU 80 GW 64 -
Husker3theSpurs, the part about "being too hard" on Watson is what saddens/sickens me about College Athletes these days. We live in such a soft society. So he gets benched. Big flipping deal!!! He wasn't performing on that particular night and knowing Watson, he would be the first to admit it. So what do you do now if you are Watson? You hang your head and feel sorry for yourself or you bust your ass all week in practice and prove to yourself, your teammates and your coaches that you are the starting PG at the University of Nebraska? Knowing Watson, that's exactly what he will do. I get so freaking sick and tired of seeing all these mid year transfers, end of season transfers that don't get that instant playing time they want so they up and leave. GOD FORBID you work for it! But that's the way so many kids are now a days. If Plan B is "easier" than Plan A, that's the plan for me! Maybe I'm too old, but I don't remember the transfer market ever being like it is today. And sadly that includes HS. Mom and dad don't like the coaches plans so they tell their son/daughter to go another route. What life lesson is that teaching them? "Well son, when things get tough, just go to someplace else where it will be easier." Sorry for the rant, and I'm not trying to single you out directly but the "work for what you get" mentality doesn't seem to exist like it should anymore.

I posted it in the Fire Miles BS thread that I still like this team. And I'm sticking to that. How many teams would be (record wise) further ahead of what we are with the schedule we have? I do wish we could have either the Clemson/VT games back and get at least one of those wins. We could be 7-3 with a cupcake schedule and the "casual fan" would think we are doing great. 5-5 with no bad losses isn't terrible. Especially when 3 of those losses are to top 10 teams and only one being at home. I'm still hopeful that this group will have a good season. I think our schedule set us up for the grind of the B10 so hopefully that helps down the stretch. GBR!

We are 5-4 and have lost to the #2 and #10 team in America with a road loss @Clemson (who some think will make NCAA tourney) and a loss on a neutral court vs another team that some say think will make the NCAA tourney and the sky is falling? Call me crazy, but I still think THIS year this team will do good things. The B10 isn't as strong as it has been in years past. I think there are plenty of wins to be had this year. The B10 did us no favors by sending us to Maryland and IU to start the slate, but I still see some good things happening this year. Also, so many are saying that a new coach would have a good roster to work with. Wrong. With coaching changes means player changes. These guys were recruited by Miles. You don't think 2-3 of them up and leave? You're crazy. Look at the women's team. Coaching change means players change. Means we start all over and the merry-go-round of NU hoops continues to spin for the next 2-3 years. The next coach finally gets his guys in place for years 4-5, we haven't been winning, fans want him fired and away we go again. In my mind no doubt Miles gets to finish out until this sophomore class is seniors. Yes, people can say it is his fault that his program is doing this. But let me ask you this. Do you think Miles knew Walt and TP would leave for the draft when our team finally had some momentum? Did we know that Andrew White's helicopter father would want him to leave a month before school starts? Again, we can say its on Miles to keep those kids, but I can't think Miles was pushing them out the door by any means. They made a choice, it hurt us, and we have paid the price for it. I am putting it in writing that I still think this team does well this year. Yes it stinks to lose to CU, but CU is REALLY good this year (as much as it pains me to say that). The one game I really wish we could have back is Clemson as that game was ours for the taking. Sitting 6-3 with losses to UCLA, VT and CU doesn't look so bad. GBR!

Creighton (8-0) vs Nebraska (5-3) Game Thread
bball23 replied to Bugeaters1's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I'm not being a jerk when I ask this, but you say "Don't dig yourself a hole" Give me specifics on what you would do differently? From my standpoint we had the pace EXACTLY as we needed it. We had open shots for a good portion of the night. Bottom line is guys have to make them. Doc Sadler had one of my favorite quotes after we upset Indiana one year. Kent asked him "So what did you do differently with your game plan that made you so successful tonight." Doc said "We made shots Kent. I didn't wave a magic wand and change our entire game plan. We made open shots. You make shots in basketball, you look good." And its true. Basketball is a scoring contest. I bet we missed 10 shots around the rim tonight. We went 3-22 on 3's. And I get that he recruited these players, but in my opinion we have some damn good players on this team. You make 8-22 tonight, we win the game and everybody is calling Miles a genius. A coach's job is to do the best he can to put guys in position to be successful. We held CU way below their average and we had pretty good shots all night long. Now its up to the guys to put the orange ball in the orange rim. -
uneblinstu's Post Game Chatter: Vol 9, Ed 9 - Creighton
bball23 replied to uneblinstu's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I actually felt the game plan was great tonight. The bottom line is, we have to make shots. Kent said after the game NU shot the ball 12 more times than CU, but made 7 less. No doubt we forced some shots, but we had a LOT of very good looks. Gotta make them. I think that's the part that is tough to swallow. We got CU to play our style tonight for the most part, but couldn't throw the ball in the ocean unfortunately. Gotta also give CU credit too as they played well defensively. Just too bad we couldn't hit a few of the open 3's we had to keep us in it. I still like this team. I really do. I know KU will be VERY tough and could get ugly. I just hope that we continue to grow as the year goes on. The B10 has some winnable games this year for us to take. We need to do our best to take care of the home court and steal a few on the road. -
Let me correct this for you "McDermott is the greatest coach since John Wooden" "Tim is the worst coach in America." There you go! Go back to the Bluejay Board whenever you feel like it. Now, I know you will come back after this game (IF CU wins) and I know you will bring up the CU game 15 games down the road too. Sad life man, sad life.

It's a unclassy move and you as a CU fan would be pissed off if I wore an NU shirt to one of your CU games. It's one of the most insecure fan bases I have ever been around. They will plead and beg for people to think highly of their program. They so desperately want to be loved and respected. And since they have never gone on a long NCAA run (even though if you talk to their fan base they are Final 4 caliber every year) they always come back by saying "Well we have more NCAA wins than Nebraska!" Yep, so does almost every other team in America so what does that say? Hell, why not compare yourselves to your old conference rival in Wichita State? I will tell you why. Because that makes you look stupid and not very good. Instead, you hang your hat on having more NCAA wins than the school that has zero. Bravo I say. Bravo.

Nebraska (4-2) vs. Clemson (3-2) Game Thread
bball23 replied to Bugeaters1's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
First off let me say that I think Jordy-Roby-Horne are going to be very good for us. With that said, they get lost on defense quite a bit right now. As they continue to get better on the defensive end they will get more playing time. If I had to guess Hoops Legend, you are the guy at the YMCA that shoots 40 times a game, maybe makes 6-7, but the 7th shot you make is the game winner and you pound your chest about the one make you made, and not about the 30 misses. On top of that, you never cross half court to play defense and you blame everybody else on your team when you lose. Am I close? -
Vegas (and this may be posted somewhere) has Clemson as 11.5 point favorites. So they do not like NU's chances of winning. Hopefully we play well and surprise some people. Would be a nice solid road win for these young Huskers.

We lost to them last year and they were an NIT team and yet we went on to beat Wisconsin a much, much better team. The point being 1 game doesn't make or break a season. Comprehende? (You can respond after getting home from the Century Link after CU beats Buffalo) -

Its not just that. Its the fact that until some started calling him out, every single post of his had a mention of Creighton being the measuring stick of Nebraska basketball. It became pretty obvious at some point. Especially when they were occurring 2-3 weeks ago when we have NUMEROUS important games on the schedule before we play them. -

NU comes in as a 5 point dog. Hoping to prove Vegas wrong! NU 75 VT 69 -
Its hard for him to watch too many NU games from the Century Link Center. Jack McVeigh will be fine. Jack will have some games where he lights it up for us. Shooters can be streaky. Shooters are going to have good games, and bad. That's who he is. He may be a tad slow on the defensive end, but usually makes up for it with a high basketball IQ.

Why oh why do you keep responding to this Creighton fan? It's what he wants. Here you go Hoops Legend. This will make you feel better. Creighton is the best team in the Nation. Hands down. No debate. Happy Thanksgiving!

So far the B10 fairing pretty well tonight. Ohio State 72 Providence 67 (Final) Rutgers 56 DePaul 39 (7:34 left) Michigan 50 Marquette 26 (Halftime) Seton Hall 56 Iowa 53 (12:10 left) Hopefully Rutgers and Michigan hold on and Iowa finds a way to win. Purdue and Northwestern both lost tough games or the B10 could really be up big. Now, Maryland should have lost their game vs GTown as well (GTown lost to Arkansas State tonight!) And Missouri gave the game away to Xavier in Double OT or the Big East wouldn't be having the best of days.

The other thing that stood out is that Wisky out-rebounded CU 42-27 and Wisky had 16 turnovers which seems high for them. At the end of the day CU found a way to win and that's what matters. They may have caught lightning in a bottle as well as Wisky not going 11-39 on 3's very often I wouldn't think? I know one more time this year I would like to see that happen
