uneblinstu's postgame chatter: Vol: 10; ed: 29 - @ Illinois
uneblinstu posted a article in Post Game
Disappointing loss for sure. This was a game NU probably should have won. Hope they boys regroup in time for Tuesday. This is one you hope that doesn't beat ya twice. Too many 3's to start the game. 6 in the first 6 minutes. Leron Black is gonna plan like an All-B1G player today, evidently. Roby had himself some really great plays. Twice blocked shots and gathered them in, leading to free throws for JPJ and got himself a 3 on the other. One thing Jordy does really well is seal off defenders when someone is driving to the rim. Created some really good lanes for guys like Taylor and Watson to get easy lay-ups. I figured we would have been ready for that back screen lob that Illinois ran so many times in the first half. 16 3 pt. attempts in the first half was what I was hoping to see fro the whole game... The 2-3 zone isn't something we've seen much of. Still didn't rebound out of it very well, but sparked a nice start to the 2nd half. Turned a 7 point deficit into a 5 point lead in 6 minutes. Roby has become an elite shot blocker. Couple of big buckets from Jordy while Illinois was trying to turn this game around. Watson finally notched the score card with a big time 3! Huskers with some sketchy shot selection down the stretch. 10/18 from the line ain't gonna cut it. 26 3's against a team that doesn't defend the rim doesn't make sense to me. Tough loss. Gotta regroup vs. an Indiana team that's been playing This doesn't kill the opportunity for NU to get to the dance, but it sure does make it tougher. -
I'm good with that.

I went back and looked at conference schedules over the past four years since Maryland and Rutgers joined the conference and since them we've had two home and homes vs. everyone except Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan St., Ohio St. and Purdue. Since we only have 5 of those in a season, we won't get all of them next season, but we might get several from that group next year. We had Michigan, MSU and OSU last season. It's not uncommon to have just one year off between teams nor is it unprecedented to see teams get H/H vs. a team in consecutive years. Looking at it, they should be able to have everyone get 5 h/h with every team over the course of 13 years. However, when they expand to 20 conference games, it's gonna start the whole thing over again... Anyway, I'm guessing we get at least Indiana, Maryland and Purdue next year. Those have been the longest gaps for NU. The other two will be interesting to see.

Here's another podcast for you Nebrasketball junkies. My buddy and I have been doing this for a few episodes now. We're learning on the fly. Hope you enjoy!

It wouldn't be inauthentic or cheap. It's part of the tournament. It's legit. It counts. But we can cross that bridge if we come to it.
-
Not necessarily. NSS2 can still be a celebration of this season and the pursuit of what's still in front of this team.

Nah, that's a "be careful what you wish for" scenario. -

Could Central Florida end up our biggest disappointment

I said it at the time, it was arguably our biggest game of the non-con. Probably the only one I'd put in front of it would have been KU. -

I'm at the point where NU's resume is what it's gonna be at this point. It's not gonna change that much one way or the other. I'm most interested in what positions NU best for staying in NYC for a while. I think that's facing Michigan then probably OSU if they get past that first game. -
This could chane between now and the PSU game, but I still think the Wisconsin game was/will be bigger. It'd been 16 years since anything like that had been on the table for the team. For NU, EVERYTHING was on the line. It was basically win-and-you're-in. There had NEVER been a game like that in program history, certainly not at home. I think it's gonna be bonkers for the PSU game and, there may very well be more on the line for both teams than the NU/Wisconsin game had, but I don't think it'll top NSS.

I just spent 20 minutes on the Tourney generator and there's a bunch of ways this could play out. Maybe I'll detail all the scenarios out there later this afternoon. -

*IF* we continue winning and Purdue continues their tumble, you could very well see OSU fall to the 2 and NU rise to the 3. These next couple of weeks are gonna be chaos. -

The guy from Northwestern, maybe? I'd also imagine he's run across a number of those people in his 30+ years working in collegiate athletics. -

I'll be curious to see who we get in the Big Ten/ACC game. It'll probably be on the road. If we have everyone return, it'd be fun to get one of the top teams for a change. I'd guess L'ville, Clemson or Notre Dame. Also, I think we're due for a home game in the Gavitt Games. A Butler, Xavier or Marquette would be cool. Why am I thinking about next season? I need help...

NU didn't have any control on those designs. We'll see if they participate in the adidas postseason unis this year or not. I hope not. I'd like to see them wear their normal stuff during the postseason. Or at least not a variation on the same design 15 other teams will be wearing, too. -

Thanks @huskercwg JPJ took this thing over in the 2nd half. It was a thing a beauty. Felt like his dunk late in the first half woke him up. Maryland couldn't stop him in the second half. I've said it before, but it rings true tonight, but JPJ is the basketball equivalent of a good running game. You may slow them down early, but they just wear you down over the course of a game. He's playing at B1G POY levels right now. It was mentioned above, but Watson did awesome work defensively. He was getting the shots he wanted, just haven't been falling. He'll break out of it eventually. I thought this was a poorly officiated game. It felt like they completely flipped how they were calling the game from one half to the next. They called a bunch of fouls in the 2nd they didn't call in the first. We rebounded as well as we have in a long time. I don't know what the adjustment was, but we got beat on the double team for wide open lay ups to start the 2nd half. I don't think we got beat on that again the rest of the night. To hold Maryland to 5/16 from 3 is pretty impressive, but it's right in line with how we've defended the 3 all conference play. Thought that was going to be the deciding factor in the game and I think it was a big one. Roby might be the best player in the Big Ten next year. Holy crap he's good. Crowd was really good down the stretch. Took a bit as the crowd settled in. Palmer's dunk woke up the crowd. Went with a friend of mine who doesn't get to go to a ton of games. We went for a beer after the game and he asked me if I was ever worried about this game at any point during it and I really wasn't until it got down to a point with a minute or so to go. It's crazy to me this is only the second time a Husker Hoops team has hit 11 conference wins since the 60's. Evan Taylor always seems to be in the mix when the game's on the line. His scramble for that rebound off the block of Cowan's shot was huge. That guy is a junk yard dog. We'll miss him next year. I was dead wrong about him and thrilled to admit that. Thought we got some really solid contributions from Jordy and Duby tonight. Some really important minutes, especially on the defensive end. With out them, I'm not sure we win. If we can get similar production from them down the stretch, I'll be really happy. This was a really good win. I thought both teams played this one like there was a lot on the line. Maryland plays a lot of close games, so I wasn't surprised to see this one be close down the stretch. Some clutch free throws down the stretch and this sucker becomes a big win. I think Sunday's game vs. Illinois will be a dogfight, too. Just find a way to bring home a win. -
Yeah, me too.

I was thinking about how significant the tournament in Orlando was for us last year and couldn't remember who we were playing in this year's tournament. And, in looking at it, we're not gonna have that problem next year. This should be a really high powered event. Will be curious to see how they match teams up. Interestingly, though, that story has been taken down...

They ended up on 5 ballots. Topped out at 20.
