SIAP - Any rumors or talk about who the new
uneblinstu replied to colhusker's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
If I was Eaton -- and I'm not, just in case any of you were wondering -- I'd jump at a chance to burnish my resume like this. I think uneblinstu or someone suggested it would be sort of bush league for Miles to promote the guy for only a year. I don't get that. If the guy understands going in that it's a 1-year deal and HE'S OK with it, who are we to complain? Yeah, it was me. And I've cooled on that the more I've thought about it. For Eaton it'd be a great opportunity that many in his position never get a chance to do. Even if it is only as an "interim", for someone in his position, that is invaluable experience. I interpreted what someone was saying differently than what I think was intended and it struck me funny back when this all was fresh. -

I don't think this is a true statement. I seem to recall Miles mentioning that one of his other guys stepped up into the recruiting role after Harriman left. I have to assume we've got it covered again. Do you know for sure that we're down a guy on the road right now? Seems to me, more I think about it, elevating the internal candidate to an interim AC makes the most sense. I'm sure we had one of the other staff members out recruiting in place of Harriman after Chris left. If you send that guy back out now, it's going to have more umph with potential recruits if you can call him an assistant coach than if you just say he's filling in for now while we're waiting to hire another assistant. Promote the internal guy on an interim basis. Let him have the title. And see what he can do. For all we know, he's the next Craig Smith. Eaton's on the road now, he was on the road in the gap between when Harriman left and Burno was hired. He'd be the favorite if they decide to go to the interim route, which seems likely at this point. -

Nothing has been said publicly one way or the other. -
I think you will see a much better team. How much better the record gets is still up for debate as the schedule is tougher. Why do you say the schedule's tougher? 4 pretty good teams away from home in the non-conference along with 2 pretty good teams at home and the Big 10 will be better Could be. I'm not convinced the conference schedule will be more difficult, though. We've got more favorable H/H in conference this year. The one plays are split fairly evenly as to which we play at home vs. away, IMO. In non-con, I think it's pretty comparable to last year with the exception of Nova. We didn't have anything like that last year. I expect NU to be more talented than last year, not sure if that means we'll be better or not. I'm anxious to see how the B1G conference will stack the games.

How do we know what sort of recruiting contacts Strickland has? Furthermore, how do we know it's Strickland at all. He surely can't be the only guy out there with "some Husker ties". -
Probably the ideal schedule for a team with so many new parts. Gotta get 10 wins out of that. 11 would be ideal.

Miles is definitely an analytics guy.

I took the internal portion as if for whatever reason he can't find someone he truly feels is worth it he "recruits" from within for Eaton or Teddy so he can have someone that's available to go out recruiting the next year and then gets someone at the top of the list next year. I wouldn't expect it to a long term thing. That's more bush-league to whatever "internal" option they have to fall back on than what Burno did. You don't hire one of those guys and then fire/demote them next year when the coaching carousel comes along again. It's not the same as recruiting, you don't "recruit over" your coaches. Those guys have connections and pedigrees. They don't have experience and this probably isn't the place you want them to get their first AC jobs, though. That doesn't mean one of them isn't a star waiting for their opportunity. So in the instance Miles can't find "the guy" you're ok with them not having anyone at all fill the role and then not have someone that can make recruiting calls and the like during the season? That's just plain dumb if they didn't do it because why would you hamstring your program having one less person helping in recruiting. Where did I say anything like that?
-
I'm fairly comfortable saying I don't think any of the internal options would be ok with that scenario, at least not the "return to the old position" scenario.
-
Yeah I didn't see him staying more, than two years because he wants and will get a head coaching job. Just wish we could have gotten the two years. Pay Kenya more than the next guy, and see if we can find some body who can bring along a serviceable big. I my response was more pointed at Hunter and Molinari. These guys want their shot to run a program, and in Molinari's case, another shot. Don't think they don't want that, regardless of how much you pay them. But it is a respect thing... What is?

You all realize that every AC at the major school level is looking to one day have their own program, right?
-
I don't think this is a greener pastures scenario.

I mean, in theory, maybe, but he still had a job at Florida and the move from Florida to ASU isn't a good career move. Making a jump like this so soon after taking a job might not be either, but job-to-job, it's not a step clear step backwards like Florida to ASU would have been, had that even been on the table, but that's not information we have at this time one way or the other. Hurley really only had one spot to fill when he made the move. He retained one guy from the previous staff and brought one with him from Buffalo. Burno really may not have been a viable option the first time around.
-
But the Problem IS, leaving your Existing employer in the lurch! There's no doubt about it. Reading the OWH and LJS stories, it's pretty apparent that if it wasn't Hurley, he doesn't go. There's an uncommon connection there.

Does he have Randy Gregory levels of talent? -
It would be awesome of the two dudes who are supposed to be our two best shooters have breakout seasons. Especially if we fully embrace the small ball thing. That would be very good.

I probably wouldn't assume he'll carry a huge burden right out of the gate. There will be a lot of competition for minutes in the back court. Parker's gonna get his minutes. Webster/Watson/Evelyn will be battling it out for the rest. I don't think it's automatic that GW gets the bulk of those. I think that competition will be pretty fierce. Do you think Watson will be as good as, say, Cookie Miller as a freshman? Here are Cookie's stats as a freshman, on a 20 win team: 26.6 mpg, 6.1 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 3.6 apg, 1.9 spg, 2.1 tpg, 38.4 FG%, 67.8 FT%, 24.6 3P% Meanwhile, Benny's stats as a junior, on a 13 win team, were: 28.2 mpg, 4.2 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 1.7 apg, 1.5 spg, 1.2 tpg, 34.2 FG%, 71.4 FT%, 29.3 3P% More tellingly, here are Benny's stats from the nine game losing streak at the end of the year. 24.0 mpg, 1.1 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 1.0 apg, 1.2 spg, 0.8 tpg, 12.0 FG%, 66.7 FT%, 00.0 3P% In those last nine games Benny was 3-25 from the field, 0-9 on 3-pt attempts. I know that he gives tremendous effort on defense, but I don't think that he's a lock to play significant minutes. No idea. Miller didn't have the competition GW will have for playing time. I'm not saying he won't contribute, but I'm also not saying it's a lock he's going to play 26 minutes a game either with the other options Miles has at the position. That's a good thing, btw. I think he'll be big contributor, I'm just gonna temper my expectations that he's going to be the one mixing the ingredients from the get go. Yes, quite a bit, my friend, quite a bit. Glynn wasn't brought into Nebrasketball to be a bench-warmer. Why did you think Tarin Smith left... to simply transfer to Duquesne? C'mon man, Miles told Tarin the truth: Glynn was brought in to run the show. It's not that simple with TS, but it's part of it, sure. I don't expect Glynn to warm the bench, never even intimated that.
