My memory could be off, but I don't remember Miles being down on foreign players (isn't that a major reason he brought Harriman aboard?). I do recall him saying that Juco players are like peach Schnapps: Enjoy in moderation. He was "down" on both. Said foreign players were a big gamble. -

I'd settle for a taller 2011-2012 Colorado State team Yea. We just have to hope that style can work in the B1G. I think we already have more talent than that CSU team if we land tummala, but experience could be what hurts us next year. The style worked pretty well this year for Miles, but it's difficult to win a lot of games when you have 6 guys in the rotation. Next year should be much better. After seeing numerous projected starting lineups with Atewe in it, I am no longer a fan of seeing "potential starting lineups" with uncommitted recruits. -
I'm not in the "Ray won't start camp." I think Ray will undoubtedly start to open the season. I am in the "Ray won't start if we're going to be very good/if these "new" players are as good as we hope camp." On a good team, Ray is a role player. He averaged just over a steal per game, and I would grade him as an average to slightly above average defender. I would grade him as a better shooter than the numbers suggest (I think most would) but he is a spot-up shooter. He cannot create off the dribble, and his accuracy drops significantly running off screens (as is the case for most spot-up shooters). His turnovers are low because he's not asked to handle the ball and doesn't pass very much. There were numerous occasions we had a 2 on 1 break and Ray took and missed a bad shot when he should have passed - not necessarily because he's selfish, but because he's a subpar ball handler/passer. I would be pleasantly surprised if Ray is not starting in conference play. To me, it hinges on how good Petteway and Webster are. I think Biggs starts at point to start the year. Pitchford and Shields are likely starters. I would consider those 4 I(including Ray) locks for the start of the season (unless Biggs is suspended. Also - haven't seen much of Smit - going off of what I've heard). If Petteway and Webster are as good as we hope, they should supplant Ray by conference play.

Asst. Coach Ben Johnson to Minnesota
nebrasketball10 replied to joshvanklomp's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Yeah, I can see that. But if you get out the check book and pay him what he's worth, then you might have a coach who is qualified to make the step up to head coach if Miles ever decides to leave Nebraska. More than anything, I think it has to do with the fact Lue has said he'd prefer to coach in the league and not in college. Doubt we'll ever see him on our bench in any coaching capacity. This. He's been very open about this. -
"I think this discussion helps illustrate my point about how we have a legit set of backups who could challenge." Could illustrate a legit set of backups or a lack established/known assets. Just to play devil's advocate/offer some perspective perspective IMO this discussion just emphasizes the amount of question marks we have entering the season. Hoping they turn out well

Who do you want to open up PBA with?
nebrasketball10 replied to seaofred92's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I'm throwing in my prediction - the Double-Pump All-Stars. Or that Russion all-star team that killed us that one year. Write.It.Down. -
That is only if he continues to shoot with the consistence he did this year....But What If he benefits by the presence of multiple options and a new found ability to be open without running the perfect screen? I think Rey can find a substantial increase in his accuracy...yet, if he still could not start then we would all be thrilled with what would be happening on the court. If he shows substantial improvement - who knows. I don't see it. The guy only shot like 66% from the FT line. But the real improvement needs to come in other areas of his game. Even if he shoots upper 30%s with others creating for him - a guy who can't create his own shot and is a pretty good shooter when others create for him is a role player on a good team.

I agree Rey starts at the beginning of the season. But if our newcomers are anywhere near as good as we're all hoping, he better not be starting by the end if it.

Well we have 7 new guys coming in as of now. 8 counting Josh or Sai. We are going to be much more competitive than last year. Agreed 100%. But can Miles convince a potential transfer of that? I am personally convinced that if we got Josh, there's a great chance we could make the tournament. I am not sure what Josh is trying to achieve in transferring, but I doubt there is a BCS team that could offer more playing time than Nebraska. And you can also throw in the arena, facilities, and the chance to make history. I have to think adding Josh would sell a lot of season tickets for this coming year. I would be hopeful... but far from convinced. We would be relying almost entirely on unknown quantities - a number of which would be freshman. And even if I were convinced (not that it matters), it's much easier to convince someone who has an interest in the program and has been following our recruiting process/redshirts than someone who is looking for a school to compete at. I'm just saying "Ya... we finished 10th and don't return much from last year's team... BUT we have a couple of 3* recruits, a 2* recruit AND some redshirts that sat out last year after doing next to nothing at their previous schools." While I believe those guys will be good, I'm trying to look at the perspective of an outsider who needs convincing. Tai Webster is a 4* btw... According to? I thought one site had him 4, one had him 3 and one had him unrated? -

Most grad transfers want playing time AND a chance to compete. Miles will need to convince any candidates that we can potentially field a winner next year. Not gonna be easy considering we lost two top contributors from a 10th place team. Probably not easy to sell outsiders on the potential of our redshirts. -
Well he is listed at 6'8", 220 lbs and Tummala is listed at 6'7", 215 lbs... Also, if McDermott is a "big pussy", then he is a "big pussy" that just has just become a repeat selection as an AP All-American. I would take a guy that you condider to be a "big pussy", if he can put up numbers for Nebraska that will lead to him to becoming a 2-time AP All-American selection. And yes McDermott had Echinique playing next to him which made "all the difference in the world". Echinique is listed at 6'9", 260 lbs as a senior. If Tummala has a guy like Smith (who is listed as 6'8", 250 lbs as a sophomore) playing next to him, then that should make "all the difference in the world". Especially because he has the ability to put on 10 lbs each season, which would have him playing at around 270 lbs his senior season. I'd take Dougie Buckets too, but that doesn't change my opinion that I consider him to be a bit of a pussy. Echenique is a very adept and aggressive rebounder -- much more so than Smith. The knock on Smith is that, despite having the body type to play the position, he's a bit soft and lacks an aggressive mindset. He'll need to turn up the intensity quite a bit to play for Tim Miles in my opinion. If not, he'll be sitting on the bench. I feel as though I'm having an extremely difficult time getting my point across in this thread. To summarize: 1) We need at least one true power player on the court most of the time who can defend the low post and aggressively battle for rebounds to the extent that Nebraska won't find itself at a rebounding deficit relative to opponents on a game by game basis. You've got to be able to rebound the basketball to win games, period. 2) Sai Tummala is more of a finesse player than a power player, and, while I like him a lot and want him on our roster very badly, I don't consider him to be a power player, but instead much more of a finesse player. We need talent and depth, period, so I'm fine with that, but my original post in this thread was in response to what I believe to be an opinion held by some here that Sai Tummala is a power player who helps solve our deficiency in that area, when I don't believe he does. Hoops, I'm with ya. Sai isn't total finesse but he's not going to bang like an Echinique does. At this stage of the game, late signing period and all, the pickins are slim. This happens to be what I think is a legit kid who could fit on our roster and do some things that current players don't do. As I go down the list of players, I just don't see a kid who has his shooting stroke except for maybe a couple of the freshmen coming in. Petteway? Not from what I'm hearing. Rivers? Nope. Shields? Nah. Pitchford? Apparently not. And judging by Sai's film and what folks are saying about Pitchford, it looks like Sai can post up better than Pitchford too. Biggs? No Parker? Are you kidding me? Gallegos? Uh, no. Competition level makes a difference, sure. But have you seen that guy's stroke? And the shots he's taken on the films I've seen have been contested shots. But, even if not, that's a pretty good % even unguarded. Shields shot 42% from 3 land (the highest 3-point percentage on the team) as a true freshman during conference play in the B1G, with a bad wing and large elbow pad to boot on his shooting arm. Yet, you have already declared Sai a much better shooter than Shields? I think I will wait and see aobut that. And, as I have said, I bet you doughnut to dollar that Shields is taller than Sai (or at least every bit as tall). I have not watched much film at all on Sai... but from what I've seen, there's no doubt that his shot is better than Shields. Shields basically only took outside shots when he was left wide open. I would guess Shields took under 50 3's all year, and probably only hit about 2 out of every 3 free throws. His shot has room for improvement.

Matthew Atewe -> Auburn -> Washington

And what Washut says is Gospel? Was this a quote from Atewe? Even if it was, Washut also said that Atewe had narrowed his decision to Auburn and Nebraska, which Atewe quickly said was incorrect. Even if Atewe told Washut that, it's very common for kids to not want to let people down and try to make everyone happy. It could just be lip service. There's no way I would pick currently pick Auburn over Nebraska, either. But I supposed they could use the same argument that every other major conference school (except Northwester) could use over us - at least SOME successful history. My opinion is that Matthew has a habit of telling the media things that he wishes he had phrased differently or omitted, and, when he later realizes it, he says they took him out of context, put words in his mouth, or something like that. It's a pattern that keeps repeating itself. I'm pretty certain he told those guys he was down to Auburn and Nebraska, and then realized the ramifications of that (perhaps he didn't tell Charlotte and Nevada), so he backtracked and said they put words in his mouth. This is highly unlikely. Brian Rosenthal has been doing this for a long time now. Then, yesterday, Washut posted about how Matthew told him he preferred Nebraska but that his mentor wanted him at Auburn. Of course, after it was published, Atewe accused them of taking him out of context. Give me a break! So, which is more likely, that we have a kid here who tends to open his mouth and say stuff he later regrets, or two incompetent media guys who just can't seem to get their stories straight? I'll go with option #1. I believe that he probably did say it to Washut. That STILL doesn't make it true/overly relevent. He may've said, "Ya I really like Nebraska. Some people close to me are kind of pushing Auburn." That doesn't mean that, in the end, that his decision is being made for him. But I agree with Cookie... I can't believe I'm falling into this trap where I'm reading into tweets (posted by others - I'm not on Twitter) about a 2* 19 y/o, trying to decipher what it does/doesn't mean. -
