I don't post off-topic posts on this message board. Others do and I tend to not get bent out of shape about it but for me this is talking about Nebraska basketball and sometimes the tangent subjects like other levels of basketball or anything going on about the university. This isn't one of those boards where I have an off-topic section so that 5 people can bitch at each other in some section. I do not apologize for that for one second. I guess to whatever cabal you visit with about such things, I have to say that this board has been less dramatic since the off-season. This thing where I run the board, free and as a hobby, and I'm put into some position where I'm supposed to feel bad about it or some nonsense is horse shit. I appreciate the guys that currently post here that don't make the time and effort I spend feel like I'm some sort of lesser person for doing so. End rant. -
Nebraska Cornhuskers (3-0) vs St Mary's Gaels (3-0) Date: Sunday Nov 17, 2024 Time: 12:00 pm Arena: Sanford Pentagon Broadcast: BTN St Mary's Head Coach: Randy Bennett (24th year) Location: Moraga, CA Conference: West Coast Conference Nickname: Gaels Mascot: Gideon Last time out: Beat Akron Shirt not to wear: Blue, silver Opening Line: St Mary's by 2.5 Nota bene: This is the 3rd meeting between these schools. Nebraska lost 58-54 in 1946 and won 68-57 in 1975, both games at the UNL Coliseum A Gael is essentially someone of Irish descent St Mary's is known for recruiting Australia and currently has 3 Australians on the roster The Gaels rank 353rd in bench minutes and 16th in 2 foul participation at KenPom. In other words, the Gaels don't play a lot of minutes into their bench even if guys get into foul trouble in the first half. Bennett has been pretty consistent about playing guys with 2 fouls whereas Hoiberg tends to be an autobench type Nebraska is 2-0 all time at the Sanford Pentegon with wins over Oklahoma St in 2018-19 and Oregon St in 2023-34 Top 7 leading scorers Player # Class Pos Height Weight Summary Paulius Murauskas 23 SO F 6-8 225 18.0 Pts, 13.0 Reb, 2.7 Ast Augustas Marciulionis 3 SR G 6-4 185 16.0 Pts, 3.3 Reb, 8.7 Ast Mikey Lewis 0 FR G 6-3 180 14.0 Pts, 1.0 Reb, 0.3 Ast Luke Barrett 33 SR G 6-6 190 11.0 Pts, 8.0 Reb, 1.3 Ast Jordan Ross 2 SO G 6-3 175 8.3 Pts, 3.3 Reb, 1.0 Ast Mitchell Saxen 11 SR C 6-10 230 8.0 Pts, 4.7 Reb, 1.3 Ast Harry Wessels 1 JR C 7-1 255 7.0 Pts, 4.7 Reb, 1.3 Ast Player to watch: Augustas Marciullionis The senior PG is the reigning WCC player of the year after putting up 12.4 ppg and 5.3 apg as he led St Mary's to the WCC title. "Gus" is a savvy as they come for a college basketball PG and when he isn't setting up his team for easy shots, he's slicing to the rim as the team's 2nd leading scorer. Out front he can ball-hawk given the rim protection he has behind him. He's a so-so 3pt shooter which is about the only thing he doesn't excel at Player to watch: Paulius Murauskas The Arizona transfer is the other Lithuanian on the team and he's a double-double waiting to happen, leading the team in scoring and rebounding. Murauskas and Berke actually went head to head this summer in the FIBA U20 Eurocup and Murauskas dominated the meeting. If there was a rebound to be had, Murauskas was going to get it. Player to watch: Luke Barrett Others to watch Luke Barrett - The two Lithuanians and 5th year senior and glue guy Barrett rarely leave the court. Mikey Lewis - The true freshman is splitting time at SG and with his three level scoring punch often takes over games while on the court. Sophomore guard Jordan Ross is starting for now. Mitchell Saxen/Harry Wessels - The two large centers are essentially interchangeable on this team, anchoring the defense and functioning as secondary scorers. UNL Game Notes Roster/infirmary report Possible starters for Nebraska 3 Guard Brice Williams 6-7 214 lbs Senior 4 Forward Juwan Gary 6-6 226 lbs Senior 24 Guard Rollie Worster 6-5 210 lbs Senior 34 Center Braxton Meah 7-1 264 lbs Senior 9 Forward Berke Büyüktuncel 6-10 244 lbs Sophomore Bench 0 Guard Connor Essegian 6-4 190 lbs Junior 2 Guard Ahron Ulis 6-3 190 lbs Senior 5 Forward Braden Frager 6-7 220 lbs Freshman 8 Guard Jeffrey Grace III 6-3 200 lbs Junior 12 Guard Gavin Griffiths 6-7 193 lbs Sophomore 20 Forward Justin Bolis 6-8 225 lbs Sophomore 25 Guard Nick Janowski 6-4 208 lbs Freshman 31 Guard Cale Jacobsen 6-4 195 lbs Sophomore 1 Guard Sam Hoiberg 6-0 185 lbs Junior 23 Forward Andrew Morgan 6-10 242 lbs Senior 35 Forward Henry Burt 6-7 222 lbs Sophomore Out for year 51 Forward Rienk Mast 6-10 260 lbs Senior The Skinny: After three games, we've seen an expected shift away from 3pt shooting this season. Thus far the Huskers have been making hay from the FT line coupled with ice cold shooting from the 3pt line when they take them. At some point you'd think the 3s might start to fall but it's no guarantee as some seasons guys just don't have it. Today's game vs St Mary's will be a chance for Nebraska to get their outside game going as the Gaels are built on taking away the paint. Can Nebraska start making shots? Offensively the Gaels are a patient and efficient team who tends to work the ball inside. When they do miss, their forwards and centers are crashing the boards in search of 2nd chance points. To this point against opponents with inferior size the Huskers have looked in mid-season form on defense. Will they hold up as the Gaels' probe their defense for openings? How much does this time and location benefit Nebraska? St Mary's is playing a game at 10 am PST in an arena that should be 95+% Nebraska fans. Is the power of the Sanford Pentagon enough to carry Nebraska to a win? Prediction: Nebraska 68 - St Mary's 65 View full article

Last game vs Akron -
Notes from UNL Nebraska extends its home win streak to 15 games following tonight’s win over FDU. Juwan Gary recorded season highs in points (19), assists (five), blocked shots (two), free throws made (seven) and attempted (eight). Gary’s assists and free throws were both career highs. Nebraska finished with a season-high 20 assists and a season-low eight turnovers. Its 20 assists marked NU’s highest assist total since the 2024 Big Ten Tournament against Indiana. Nebraska went on a 10-0 run in the first half, its second double-digit run of the season. (11:49-8:53) Berke Büyüktuncel finished with a season-high 12 points and matched career bests in both rebounds (seven) and assists (three). It is the third straight game he has grabbed at least six rebounds. Brice Williams finished with 10 points and has now been in double figures in seven straight games, which matches the longest stint of his career. Cale Jacobsen saw his first action of the season and set career bests in rebounds (four) and assists (assists) in a stint of 5:04 in the first half. Jacobsen finished with a +12 in 6:44 of game time. Nebraska’s bench outscored FDU 29-5 and had half of NU’s 20 assists. Nebraska converted 17 FDU turnovers into 28 points. Nebraska went 23-of-28 from the foul line and has gotten to the foul line at least 25 times in all three contests. Nebraska held FDU to 60 points, well under its 84.7 ppg average in its first three games. Sam Hoiberg led NU with three steals, the second straight game with three steals. Nebraska has now won 24 straight games when holding an opponent under 70 points, including 30-2 over the last two-plus seasons. The time Nebraska lost a game when holding an opponent under 70 points was against Purdue in 2022.

Nebraska Cornhuskers (2-0) vs Fairleigh Dickinson Knights (1-2) Date: Wednesday Nov 10, 2024 Time: 7:00 pm Arena: PBA Broadcast: BTN+ Fairleigh Dickinson Head Coach: Jack Castleberry (2nd year) Location: Teaneck, NJ Conference: Northeast Conference Nickname: Knights Last time out: Beat D-III Purchase College Shirt not to wear: Blue, chain mail Opening Line: Nebraska by 27 Nota bene: Fairleigh Dickinson is most known as the team that knocked off Zach Eddy and Purdue as the #16 seed in the 2023 NCAA tourney After winning vs Purdue during his one season at FDU, Tobin Anderson parlayed that success into the Iona job that had previously been held by Rick Pitino. Anderson's assistant Jack Castleberry was tabbed as the new head coach. FDU, the largest private university in New Jersey, has multiple campuses. As part of this feature, it's one of the few schools that fields a D-1 and D-III team. The Farleigh Dickinson University-Florham team's mascot is the Devils. Nebraska is 1-0 all time vs FDU, their first meeting being in 2003-04. Coincidentally, the only time before this season Nebraska played both FDU and Bethune Cookman was 2003-04. Player to watch: Terrance Brown The 6'3" sophomore guard has dominated the shot attempts for the Knights, almost exclusively inside the arc. Brown is a physical, annoying defender with some ball-hawking skills Player to watch: Dylan Jones The 6'5" Juco guard is the main source of 3pt offense for FDU and essentially all he does. Currently shooting 9-18 from deep, Jones will take and make highly contested shots from 3. Jones recently went 4-8 from deep against a Creighton team that is predicated on taking away the 3. Others to watch Bismark Nsiah - D-II transfer forward, 6'8" 220. FDU plays a lot of 5 out and Nsiah is able to pass and make 3s while playing as an undersized center Jo'el Emanuel - Another highly athletic glue guy type player who does most his damage inside the arc. Ahmed Barba-Bey - Last season was Nsiah's teammate at D-II Jefferson University. He's a PG splitting time with returner Brayden Reynolds. Barba-Bey has started the first three though Reynolds is arguably better. UNL Game Notes Roster/infirmary report 34 Center Braxton Meah 7-1 264 lbs Senior (Out) Possible starters for Nebraska 3 Guard Brice Williams 6-7 214 lbs Senior 4 Forward Juwan Gary 6-6 226 lbs Senior 24 Guard Rollie Worster 6-5 210 lbs Senior 0 Guard Connor Essegian 6-4 190 lbs Junior 9 Forward Berke Büyüktuncel 6-10 244 lbs Sophomore Bench 2 Guard Ahron Ulis 6-3 190 lbs Senior 5 Forward Braden Frager 6-7 220 lbs Freshman 8 Guard Jeffrey Grace III 6-3 200 lbs Junior 12 Guard Gavin Griffiths 6-7 193 lbs Sophomore 20 Forward Justin Bolis 6-8 225 lbs Sophomore 25 Guard Nick Janowski 6-4 208 lbs Freshman 31 Guard Cale Jacobsen 6-4 195 lbs Sophomore 1 Guard Sam Hoiberg 6-0 185 lbs Junior 23 Forward Andrew Morgan 6-10 242 lbs Senior 35 Forward Henry Burt 6-7 222 lbs Sophomore Out for year 51 Forward Rienk Mast 6-10 260 lbs Senior Hoiberg presser Much like us, Fred Hoiberg is trying to figure out if his team is going to figure it out or if he needs to do something different. The Skinny: Nebraska has played what some might consider a couple of clunkers to start the season where games against inferior opponents were not fully decided until late. The Huskers have been plagued by turnovers and poor 3pt shooting...all of which might be attributed to guy either not knowing or trusting where everyone else on the court. One of the attributes of a Fred Hoiberg team is that they share the ball. Thus far their assist number project more heroball than Hoiball. The defense has been sturdy though so between that and Nebraska's ability to get to the FT line, this team has been able to win despite not playing their best. Farleigh Dickenson will try to run Nebraska out of their own gym so we'll see who is able to play in control in what should be a high pace, high scoring game. When they do run offense, FDU is remarkably quick in rotation the ball around the perimeter so it's up to Nebraska to find and pop out on the one guy that can beat them from 3. The Knights will take many quick and tough shots...it's just a matter of realizing they all likely won't go in. If Nebraska can't make shots tonight the offensive boards are wide open against this undersized FDU squad. Any Nebraska post player that can grab a miss should be able to feast on taking out the trash. Does Nebraska make changes to their playing minutes? Scheme? Or do they just go back out and simply try and execute at a higher level? Prediction: Nebraska 87 - FDU 66 View full article -

“Quentin is a skilled guard who fits well in our system. He is a good shooter with length and athleticism on the wing and can play through contact. He also handled the ball with the Las Vegas Knicks AAU program and showed good court vision and a high basketball IQ. He reminds me of Brice Williams, as Quentin has a similar skillset and is someone who can develop in our system.” - Fred Hoiberg His father Wayne played for Portland St and Colorado - Colorado Springs as well as overseas.

Farleigh's brother, Bruce -
Notes from UNL Nebraska has now won 14 straight games at home dating back to last season Nebraska has now won 23 straight games when holding an opponent under 70 points, including 29-2 over the last two-plus seasons. The time Nebraska lost a game when holding an opponent under 70 points was against Purdue in 2022. Nebraska forced 22 turnovers, the most since forcing 22 turnovers at Michigan State on Feb. 6, 2021. It ties for the second-highest number of opponent turners in Fred Hoiberg’s five-plus seasons at Nebraska. Nebraska has forced 20+ turnovers in both games this season Nebraska finished with 11 steals, including a career-high five from Juwan Gary. Gary's previous high in steals was four at Kansas State last season. NU's 11 steals were its highest total since recording 15 against Indiana on Jan. 3, 2024. Gary also led NU with 11 points Brice Williams finished with 10 points, snapping a streak of four straight 20-point games dating back to last season.
