2016-17 Media Preseason Predictions
Chuck Taylor replied to hhcmatt's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
http://www.collegesportsmadness.com/article/13475 Minnesota No. 80 and 9th in BIG. Seems a little high. Returning PG and some new talent, but coming off a horrid season with a mediocre coach. -
2018 SG Aguek Arop -> San Diego St
Chuck Taylor replied to uneblinstu's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
Read those from Aguek's perspective, not NU's. He's gotta do what he's gotta do (turn down Miles' suggestion to go to prep school). One thing that gets lost in this is that his family would have to pay for the year of prep school to keep his NU offer, which could be taken away a year from now as well. So it's not a matter of pride, this just really isn't an option for Aguek. -
2018 SG Aguek Arop -> San Diego St
Chuck Taylor replied to uneblinstu's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
Miles has to do what he thinks is best right now. But I wouldn't have bailed on Aguek in order to free up another scholarship after I offered a transfer with a health risk who plays a position where we already have four guys. Wingett Sr. agrees with Chubick Sr. David Wingett Sr. · Walthill High School I'm sure alot of other schools would be thrilled to have him. Like · Reply · 18 mins -
Ouch. Chuck Taylor is still correct, according to Robin Washut. Matter of semantics, I'd asked someone about the scholarship being pulled and was told no. I'll admit to being wrong. I had planned to use my board cred as collateral on a new car, guess I'll be sticking with my '98 Buick.

Paul White - Georgetown transfer -> Oregon
Chuck Taylor replied to hhcmatt's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
Yeah, I don't quite see this one either. White is good, but 4 is the one spot where we're loaded. McVeigh, Morrow, Horne and Jacobson already on the roster. Wouldn't he be a junior in 2017-18, along with Morrow, McVeigh and Jacobson? Maybe he's quite a bit better than those guys, when healthy (i have no idea; I've never seen the guy play). And I'm not sure that grouping would qualify as "loaded" from other teams' perspectives. Like "wow, the guys they have at that spot are crazy good, what will we do?" I mean, I like our guys, and we've upgraded the talent, but we have to keep doing that in this league. Every year. If he was quite a bit better, White would not be transferring. White is a good match for the Georgetown offense. I see him less as a PF and more as a poor man's Otto Porter (another Georgetown player). Porter parlayed his role at Georgetown into a lottery pick (granted Porter has struggled in his role at times with Washington and may be replaced by Kelly Oubre). That being said, I will defer to TheKamdyMan's analysis of White's talent. My biggest issue is that we need more depth at G and C than we need anther F. Collecting talent is nice, but bringing a sixth guy to play amongst 2 positions does not make sense. Further that would give us 5 guys in the 2019-2020 senior class. *6 guys in that class (2018-19) as you are probably forgetting about James Palmer. However, Robin said in his write up that Paul White is a no brainer for a medical hardship so that would put him with Roby, Horne, and Tshimanga if that is true. There is no guarantee all of those guys will be here next year. Even if it's collecting talent in some regards it's a no-brainer for what would be an used scholarship and there is no guarantee that Paul even stays past two years when he could potentially grad transfer. I hope we're grooming Roby towards being a combo guard and that he has the skill set for it...that would solve some of our logjam problem. You're right, it's better than another open scholarship. Fill it and think of it as a lottery ticket. He gets healthy and he's a starter at some point. Just wish it was at another position. -

This has some pretty good insight into the world of recruiting these days. One big takeaway: The system, along with the definition of "cheating," has changed. With so much money sloshing around in college sports, it's going to find its way into somebody's hands. And at least as far as basketball is concerned, we'd be better off with Nike or UA. http://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/candid-coaches-college-basketball-recruiting-isnt-getting-any-cleaner/

2017 PF/C Logan Strom -> UC-Davis
Chuck Taylor replied to Navin R. Johnson's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
Jacobson is big enough and athletic enough that he can provide some minutes at 5. Strom is strictly a 4 and we already have more than we need. Can't see any way we'd offer. -

UNO offer. -
It seems like maybe we're waiting on Allen unti after he takes the ACT. Clearly he's talented enough to play here, considering the offers he's collected. He had an unofficial at Creighton last week. Haven't heard anything about that, but figure we'd be in better position since they already have two 2017 commitments from wings. The TCU offer is interesting because Allen is the type of big, physical player Jamie Dixon used to have at Pitt (their roster if full of "thick" guys like Sheldon Jeter). And I mentioned earlier on one of the threads that the W. Va. offer is pretty surprising, considering they like to get out after you on defense and run (79 ppg). So basically two programs with different philosophies, but both like him. (Probably could have posted this on the Teddy Allen thread.)
-
Recap on some of the guys' offers (skipping some lesser ones): Teddy Allen: West Virginia, DePaul, Va Tech, Iowa State, Cincinnati, TCU (Jamie Dixon there now), UNO Isaiah PB Chandler: UTEP (Tim Floyd), Loyola and S. Illinois of the Valley, Ball State, Buffalo and Bowling Green of the MAC, St. Bonaventure, UNO Logan Strom: Indiana State and Southern Illinois of the Valley, Miami and Kent State of the MAC, about half the Summit, including UNO David Wingett: SDSU and ND of Summit Ayo Akinwole: UNO commit Marques Wilson (Omaha Elite): Evansville, Lehigh, Bucknell, Verbal Commits still lists Iowa State but I think that was withdrawn when Hoiberg left. Aguir Agau: UMKC I'm guessing Chandler and Wingett could pick up better offers as slots start filling up for the better schools. A coach told me Chandler's inconsistency hurts him. For Wingett, there are questions about whether he has the muscle to hold up in a top league. Commitments now are based largely on summer play, schools can bring in kids for visits this fall and work them out, so that might open some more doors.

Not sure how this got started, but NU is not pulling its offer to Arop.

2019 JUCO SF Teddy Allen - WNCC - Signed
Chuck Taylor replied to basketballjones's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
Horne won't see one minute at 3 this year, barring 4 guys fouling out or something like that. He has some good perimeter skills for a guy his size so that he could make plays against high school players. I don't think he'll be able to drive from the perimeter and do a spin on his way to the basket against college players. Teddy Allen isn't that shifty or quick, but he's fast and he's strong. He'll play 3. They are not the same player, despite some apparent similarities in listed sizes. Not sure it's been mentioned, but Allen also has an offer from West Virginia. That one surprises me. Huggins needs elite athleticism to run his press, and that isn't Allen's strong suit. I think he can be a 15 ppg scorer in the right program, one that spreads the floor well, giving him a chance to get to the basket. And Cincinnati is a good fit because they play a physical style. But I wouldn't have pegged him for W.Va. or Louisville or somebody like that. But that's why my opinions are on here instead of a college coach's office. -

2016-17 Media Preseason Predictions
Chuck Taylor replied to hhcmatt's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
No. 103 in top 144 countdown: http://www.collegesportsmadness.com/article/13392 Projected for 10th in the BIG and a spot in one of the lesser tournaments. Pretty much what all of the preseason forecasts will say, I'd guess. -

2016-17 Media Preseason Predictions
Chuck Taylor replied to hhcmatt's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
No one except for the biggest homer will pick us above 10th place. It is what it is and it's up to the team to either meet or exceed those expectations. We're going to be young overall, our top 2 scores are gone, a new starter at point guard, not a lot of size in the post. That isn't the formula for impressing preseason forecasters. Time to go to the "games aren't won on paper" argument to prove them wrong! -
Allen's picked up offers from Virginia Tech and DePaul as well. fwiw, Iowa State had offered Marques Wilson when Hoiberg was still there, but pretty sure that's no longer on the table. Probably even less likely now with them offering Allen.
-
Not only is Teddy Allen lighting it up, he is now one of three local players to hold a P5 offer (Arop and Chang) as Iowa State just offered. I still think Chandler's going to get bigger offers, too. A lot of schools are going after higher targets right now, but as they commit, a 6-9 kid with Chandler's athletic ability might look pretty good by October. Wingett also possible.
-
2018 Roman Behrens got an offer from Kent State, not sure if that was posted earlier. And sounds like Wingett had a good weekend in Vegas, maybe he's next. Also worth mentioning, Teddy Allen's team is lighting it up in Vegas and that's probably the 3rd best local team behind Aguek's and Chandler's. The boys are having a good summer.
-
He has to get up early on road trips to pick up the Danish for the team before continental breakfast runs out?
-
UNO has Mitchell Hahn available this year too after sitting out a transfer year. So a 2017-18 starting lineup of Ayo, Teddy Allen, Hahn, Thurman and Chandler? Whoa. I still think Allen and Chandler will get some higher offers, but we've only got about 2 more weeks in the evaluation period. Maybe it's been mentioned already, but the Mavs have also offered Brady Heiman. Hansen's going all-in on the local kids. Fun to watch and see how it turns out.
-
I'll repeat what I said earlier: he was one of the best players in Omaha last weekend, and he was a year younger than the others. I know he didn't do much at Burke last year, but sometimes team dynamics don't allow a younger kid to thrive. He's good. Also, Chandler has picked up offers from Bowling Green and Southern Illinois. Moving up a bit.
-
Seems like he would have been watching several other Elites ahead of Strom. Not sure we need another 6-7 guy to play the 4. Perhaps Miles was there watching Poor Bear-Chandler... Ah, the old tell the reporter you're watching one guy when you're watching another trick!
