I am in Auckland right now getting ready to fly back home, and I can say New Zealand is amazing. Rugby DOMINATES the news (granted they are about to play the World Cup in England), but it is also clear the natives are huge other sports fans as well (they even have a sheep shearing champion). However, every native I spoke with knew little about local basketball although a few were familiar with the NBA (the Lakers and Knicks came up mostly). One guy in Auckland could name the entire Knicks starting lineup, but he had never even heard of Tai. By comparison, a few of the Aussies I met had heard of McVeigh. Considering everything I saw and what he has been through, I have a lot more respect for Tai.

This could be a huge benefit for the basketball program, and we know how Miles has previously embraced new trends . . . . http://journalstar.com/sports/huskers/husker-sports/nebraska-aims-to-set-trend-in-sport-analytics-with-hire/article_e9735fe4-0e32-5bbc-8a9f-b749134c7f56.html

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/13169056/bo-ryan-wisconsin-badgers-retire-next-season For some reason, I am not completely surprised. Wisconsin has already named the successor.

Had to answer my own question. It was David Harvey. http://sports.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting/football/recruiting/player-David-Harvey-29759 Callahan thought the size of his hands would indicate how much he would develop physically. Like Miles looking at a player's leg hair. But it wasn't to be. Development, that is. Harvey finished his Husker career of 4 seasons plus a redshirt with one career tackle. Which is one more than I had. Callahan also signed Harvey in hopes of also bringing in Harvey's high school teammate A.J. Wallace. Sadly, Harvey and Wallace barely knew each other as Harvey had recently transferred into Wallace's school. I also remember something about Harvey having huge feet.

Amen! If Hammonds could pick up some of Fuller's grit, I could see a Fuller/Hammonds pairing at C depending upon match up.

What does Chad Ford know? I know right?

Most recent Chad Ford mock draft which projects rounds 1 and 2 does not mention TP.

With how brand conscious the NBA is I would be very surprised to see sponsors on top level team jerseys (other than a small trademark such as the Nike Swoosh). The NBA has been developing a global brand for over a decade now and allowing sponsors to place their brands front and center on jersey's would only (1) dilute the NBA brand; and (2) potentially create a long term association which may be hard to distance itself from in the event of the sponsor (a) becoming defunct or ( enduring a scandal. I could see NBDL teams having local sponsors on the jerseys. The smaller market teams may drum up more interest when the teams are viewed as an extension of the community (think Green Bay Packers or Pittsburgh Steelers). I remember when the Omaha Royals became the "Golden Spikes." At the time, the team was owned by the Union Pacific Railroad and the new name was a reference to the corporate history. I believe the team reverted back to the Royals after the UP sold its controlling interest.

Applied math? Ever thought of working in the finance? I know a few math majors who did well in that field.

ESPN: Looking ahead at Nebraska Cornhuskers
Donkey replied to AuroranHusker's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Nebraska has been a football school and the fans are used to football style recruiting. But basketball is a different animal. Kids are spotted and ranked no later than their sophomore years. The relationships start earlier making it harder to immediately build a relationship when the kids are juniors or seniors. Miles did not come to Nebraska with a Calipari list of basketball connections. People forget that guys like Calipari were coaching in Final Fours 19 years ago (that UMass team was even ranking #1 in the country) and have had decades to build up recruiting ties. What Miles has done over his career is impressive, but really was not noticed until recently. Further, he did not coach at tradition rich basketball programs and spent most of his time developing players instead of coaching players to help their draft stock. I really think Miles just needed more time. Transfers have helped jump start the program; however, quick fixes can backfire. Already, Miles has 2017 recruits already ranked in the top 100 looking at Nebraska. To me that is a good sign of progress. -
Who are we going to target for our new assistant
Donkey replied to hhcmatt's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Hmmmm. A player coming, or going? Kill-Joy! If it's another 'Going;' just another opportunity to up-grade the roster. (Hope the new 'additions' alleviate that 'suicidal' feeling amongst the long-suffering 'Old-Timers' ) Don't we have a potential graduate transfer visiting this weekend? -
That picture only tells a small part of the story. There is a small, organized group of 30-50 men in Baltimore who were part of a society which advocate peaceful demonstration which has existed for some time. When the riots started, these men donned their t-shirts (which were black and I believe had the number "300" printed across their chests) and walked through the streets trying to calm everyone down. There was footage of the men walking right into the fracas, and I did not see one of them strike another person.

The NBA is all about defense when it comes to developmental guys like TP. Miles already has a good defensive system, so teams know TP can play defense. If he shows quickness, good lateral movement, and a long reach, he will get additional looks. My biggest issue with TP is that he plays a fairly talent-deep position (3nD SF or combo guard). The top 3nD SF's are usually 6'8"-6'10" (2-4 inches taller than TP) and the combo guards are usually lightening fast guys who streak up and down the court. I worry TP is more of a tweener. If I were TP, I would try to be a scoring version of Thabo Sefolosha.

A little perspective from a guy who knows a thing or two.
Donkey replied to Norm Peterson's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I agree shooting needs improvement, but I also feel the team has real chemistry issues. I believe HHC poster Dean Smith has mentioned this belief as well in the past two years. Looking back at the schedule and talking to people only reinforces this belief. Nebraska played well against Maryland, Michigan State, and Wisconsin (the teams who went furthest in the tournament) but mentally checked out (and were routed) against Iowa, Ohio State, and Purdue. For Nebraska to do well next season, there needs to be a true leader on the court. Petteway, with his mother's illness, may not have been in the best position to lead (and who can blame him). Pitchford was never a leader type. Shields could be a leader. After than, no one else really stands out. If White or Shields steps up next season and says "this is my team" and leads accordingly, I know we have a fighting chance. Otherwise . . . -
Former Husker hired at Kearney High
Donkey replied to Navin R. Johnson's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Auroran, I'm just being a smartass. I remember beating a lot of Aurora teams back in high school. I remember they ran the old Maryland I (three-back I set), and their splits were so wide I would spend the whole game in the backfield hitting the ball carrier and/or the quarterback. Great to see Kearney High getting a good coach. Hopefully, Drake can build a dynasty similar to their track and field team! -
Just some food for thought. Harriman has been offered other jobs but stayed at Nebraska. The popular consensus was that Harriman stayed because of his son's treatment. Eventually, though Harriman was going to leave. The man is definitely climbing the ladder. Harriman seems to have been very selective with his next job. He previously worked under Rick Majerus at St. Louis. I doubt this move has anything to do with Harriman's relationship with Miles.

Terran Petteway's Mother has passed away.
Donkey replied to ShortDust's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Who the hell wouldn't give you extra time to take a test after your grandpa died? That seems pretty heartless. Heartless? Law school? Seems about right. Pretty much that was status quo. Unless you were comatose, you were expected to be at the final. I know one student who actually took his final in a hospital bed. -
Terran Petteway's Mother has passed away.
Donkey replied to ShortDust's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
My grandfather, whom I was very close with, died right before I had to take my final exams during my 1L year of law school. I had to fly home to attend the funeral and then took my first exam the day after I returned back to school (I was only gone 3 days). I requested my first exam be pushed back 1-2 days to get my mind clear and was denied. It is a wonder I passed that test. I see Terran going through this and hope the University gives him enough time to mentally prepare for his finals. -
He is going pro.

Nigel Hayes wasn't the only one caught by an open mic
Donkey replied to Norm Peterson's topic in College Basketball
While that specific topic has been discussed, maybe not as thoroughly as others, I feel playing the "what if" only serves to aggravate a situation and simply focuses on the negative. At the end of the day, Kaminsky accepted Harrison's apology and wants to focus on the national championship game. Kaminsky is a high character guy and should be commended for dealing with the situation as an adult. Let's move on to what could be a great national championship game. -
I have noticed that high school basketball honors usually focus on players' offensive success. Cauley-Stein's offensive game was, and to some extent still is, limited. All of the Kentucky people I have talked to feel Cauley-Stein is a solid defender (they use Nerlens Noel and Anthony Davis as their baseline) but lacks the ability to take over a game offensively.

Tarin Smith Announces Decision to Transfer
Donkey replied to hhcmatt's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
TIFWIW, but I was told Miles let him go. It sounds like Tarin's dad was a handful and has been reaching out to other programs in regards to Tarin possibly transferring. Miles caught wind of this and decided to part ways. Just curious. Did you hear anything about Tarin moving over to the 2 next season? Yes, and he no likey that. I can't say I blame him if he wanted to be a PG going forward as it sounds like that wasn't in the plans at NU. Ok that jives with something that was shared with me last night. I did not know about the parent issue but the whole story makes sense. -

If your source is "in the loop" then I fear the next couple of days. It can't be good hearing of guys expected to transfer and then having unexpected ones as well. Certainly not saying he isn't in the loop, but I do fear if he is. The last 36 hours have been crazy it seems. My source is normally spot on, and I still trust him. However, after reading some of the news reports and seeing all of the surprises, I have been seriously looking back at all of the issues over the past season. There were some serious chemistry issues. Now you see two players suddenly leaving the program before Miles has conducted individual meetings. Was the team chemistry really that bad? Is it possible Mollinari upset the balance? Lots of things to consider.

I called my guy a few minutes ago and he said, like Pitchford, TS leaving was a shock to him. Sorry guys, my source, who is usually dead on, must be out of the loop. As for TP, nothing has changed.
