Where It Went Wrong (Maybe) -- Some Stats
cornfed24-7 replied to hskr4life's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Right?!? Because what's your bench mark for success if this is true? I don't know the answer to that. But I know what ever the answer is Hoiberg blew that bench mark out the water this last 2-3 years. I'm to believe there's a coach out there that's going achieve even marginally better results given the same situation as Fred. Get out of here with that mess. Someone mentioned recently, I think in jest, that we haven't tried the Northwestern approach yet. But if this is the reality then I think that's probably the best bet and Fred has done a good enough job to be the guy to bet on. -

I totally believe that. But let's say you drop a cool 500k more on his offer does that change his ask? It may not have. But 500k seems like chump change from what I'm learning today. If it really is 5 mil to compete and we're closer to 2 mil then from here on out I am just going to assume we couldn't come up with a persuasive enough offer to make a player either stay at or commit to the Huskers. -

And why Lawrence and Wilcher left. -
If this is the case I really become indifferent to who the coach of Nebraska Basketball is. And I don't know I'd except any argument we should be firing the head coach this year, next year, or the year after if there is any significant buyout involved. Am I to believe there's a coach out there that can compete with other schools offering twice or more in terms of amount of NIL funds that can do better than Hoiberg has the last 3 years? And it doesn't seem its an insignificant amount of schools spending at this level. Like this doesn't sound like this is just the top 20 schools. What Fred has done the last 3 years is probably the high water mark if that's how competitive we are in the NIL space. Man if true this thread is about as discouraging and disheartening as it gets. I sure hope the disparity isn't this large because If this season was a gut punch than this news is a machete to the testicles.

I'm a tweener. Hoiberg should have fired after year 3. Just atrocious. But he wasn't. Now I get the benefit of hindsight. So how I look at it is this. Year 1 - 3 is now a nightmarish excruciatingly long year 1 for me. Full disclosure if you made the "it's really year 1" argument to me at the beginning through the late middle of year 4 I would have howled from my soap box about how wrong you were. The next 3 years theres some success and some horrible let downs that really make you question if Hoiberg can sustain the successes. And you got that wart of a first season in the back of your mind. Which means to me he's got this next year. His year 5 so to speak. Prove you can be successful again. Because if he doesn't make the tournament I will have zero confidence Hoiberg ever will again. And it's not like I'm starting with a surplus of confidence going into next season to begin with. And I really want see Sam get his last year with his Dad. Having two sons has softened me . A Dad getting to coach his son's last year. I'm here for it. It's not like I can't wait one more year to start over from scratch again -
Yup. Dumbest decision the powers that be made. Horrible. Stupid. I don't have enough adjectives.

I think what this cements for me is Hoibergs offense is at its best with a big man that can pass. It may even be a prerequisite. -

I'm taking Wilcher 3 years in the system over Conner with 1. We didn't need much of a boost. I think the vet gives us more than the rookie. We still got exploited in D. In the 1st half of the season Conner was atrocious on D. He did get better on that end though Not to mention you got 4 dudes back from a tournament team the year before. That alone is worth its weight in gold. Probably lessens the leadership gap this year as well. As far as GG you could trade him for Rice. But that dude can't even hold Wilchers jockstrap as far as production in a Husker uniform Yup. You switch those 2 and we're in the Big Ten tournament 100%. And we're still talking about possible back to back tournament appearances. -

There may have been no way to keep them. I know nothing. But if there was... I'd say we messed up before the season even started by not getting Wilcher or Lawrence back. I'd take Wilcher over Conner. And Lawrence over Rollie. And I think if you make that switch we're still talking about if we are gonna make the tournament or not. -

This and Mast returning are 2 of the most significant factors that will determine if next season is a success or not in my opinion.

I have no idea if there needs to be a significant increase in commitment to Nebraska NIL for us to be successful or not. Meaning I have no idea how competitive we actually are. My gut feeling, based on absolutely nothing, is we are average to slightly above average. This season didn't feel like we were that far off. It felt like this was a oddly constructed team with weird pieces from the get go for me. Do we really need to tweak things that much? I don't think we do. Seems like the problem this year is we overcompensated for last year. Also it needs to be stated my optimism completely hinges Mast being back. If that changes you will immediately notice the tenor of my posts change to despair and gloom *This was supposed to be a response to @GhostOfJoeMcCray so this may seem kinda random -
Damn... That's the season right there.

This is what tips the scale for me for why I think Fred gets/deserves another year. I am actually optimistic about next year. I made my peace with this season weeks ago. You guys will get there too eventually -
