The Ghost of Nebrasketball Present
Norm Peterson replied to Norm Peterson's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I'm going to say Cam's a quality passer. As good as Mo? Have no idea. But he has that attribute. That certain dime-dropping knack that some guys just instinctively have. We saw a bit of it in the scrimmage. I think Mo was a better shooter, especially his senior year, but they're comparable there as well. I think he's at LEAST as fast as Mo and maybe quicker/faster. And he's 4 inches taller than Mo Watson. And potentially a good deal more explosive, too. His ceiling is higher than Mo's because of his size and leaping ability. But can he develop that intangible of knowing just when and where to find his teammates to put them in position to score? And will that happen at some point this year? Those are things we'll need to watch. I think it's certainly possible that he can have the kind of impact for us that Mo Watson had for that one team. On the plus side for Cam he does have 3 more years of eligibility in which to develop. -
The Ghost of Nebrasketball Present

Mack and Burke are both mind-blowingly fast. One guy like that on a team can cause problems. Two guys like that can create some real match-up issues. I think both of them have scoring mentalities, Mack and Burke, and can back it up with ability. Both are low 30s career 3-pt% shooters, but both are good enough to force defenses to respect their outside shots and have the capability to blow by defenders on the way to the rack, where they both are capable finishers and where Mack additionally excels at dishing to open teammates. I see Kavas with a lot of open-shot opportunities this year because I think the speed and quickness of Mack and Burke are going to force defenses to help off of our shooters, leaving Kavas with some space to hit some treys. Green will probably be a beneficiary of that as well, provided he can continue his 3-point success from last year as a juco (the juco line is closer, sure, but if you watched WNCC's games last year, Green was regularly launching attempts from well behind that line.) If our shooters are connecting, we'll have a puncher's chance in most of our games. The key question is whether we can defend well enough to hold down the other team's offense enough that our offense can outscore them. Because I think we'll be able to score the ball. And just for something to compare to, I know he was a Creighton guy, but I see a lot in common between Cam Mack and Mo Watson. Remember that guy? -
If you could create a roster from scratch and insert any pieces you wanted, you wouldn't assemble the roster we have. You just wouldn't. Among other things, you'd find an experienced, athletic big who could score, defend and rebound. Maybe even two of 'em. But, given the time of year when he came in and started this process, and who was available at the time, I don't think we can really fault Hoiberg for how things turned out. In fact, I think he deserves a lot of praise. Do we have some obvious weaknesses? Sure. Do we have some strengths? Absolutely. Is this a team likely to struggle during the conference sleight? Sure. I suppose. The pre-season prognosticators who write for magazines or who program computers can't base predictions on hope. They have to go with what they can see. And what they see of us is that we return less than 5% of our total minutes/points/rebounds/assists/etc. They have reputations to protect; they have to go with objective, measurable stuff. We're fans and we can hang our hats on whatever the hell we want to. I'm curious what everyone else thinks. Because what I see is not altogether bad news. I think we have some weapons in our arsenal. DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT SAYING WE'LL WIN IT ALL THIS YEAR OR MAKE THE DANCE OR EVEN BE REALLY ALL THAT GOOD. NOT SAYING THAT. NOT SAYING THAT AT ALL. But I am saying we're not without some players. And I start with the fact I think we'll have one of the fastest backcourts in the league with Mack and Burke. And I think we have some guys who can potentially fill it up from deep, including Kavas and Green. I think we have some shut-down defenders in Burke and Cheatham. We have some guys who can take it to the rack in Cheatham, Green, Burke and Mack. And if our shooters are as good as they were at their last stops, we'll have a puncher's chance in most of our games. We also have a lot of intriguing unknowns: How quickly do the freshmen bigs develop? How quickly do the jucos transition to major college ball? Will Stevenson be eligible and will he be able to clean the defensive glass? Do we have anyone who can defend the post against quality bigs? Are there any pleasant surprises on the roster (i.e., guys who come in and are a lot better than you were expecting a la Shavon Shields as a freshman)? Who will be our double-figure scorers? And how many double-figure scorers will there be? Again, I'm curious what others think. What are our legit strengths? What are our legit weaknesses? What stuff could go either way and it's too soon to know? Thoughts?

KenPom 2019-2020 KenPom Rankings Thread
Norm Peterson replied to 49r's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
I take that to mean we are favored in only one league game this year? We're not even favored at home against Rutgers? I say nonsense. Yeah, we don't have size. That's a problem. But, from what I've seen, we still have a pretty solid back court. And, in some respects, that backcourt is pretty exceptional. We're going to put up points. And, as a result, we're going to have a puncher's chance in almost every game. -
We don't have a lot that we can look at on this roster and say, hey, this is an advantage for us. But speed is one of those things. Cam Mack and Dachon Burke are two of the quickest, fastest guys we've had in years. And they happen to be on the same roster at the same time. You'd have to go back a lot of years to find two guys on the same Husker team who are as fast as these two.

Law of unintended consequences: What is the name/likeness/image of an athlete worth in a small market like Lincoln, Nebraska? What is the name/likeness/image of that same athlete worth in a larger market like LA? How might that affect recruiting? How many different QBs in California can sell their sponsorship to a mattress company to put their face on a billboard? At some point, there's a market profusion. And every college QB who sells his affiliation with a car dealership in California is one less NFL guy who will have that opportunity. In Nebraska, it only currently works for former Huskers. And for every current Husker who now would be able to accept money from Truck Companies for some sort of marketing deal, that's one less Kelsey brother who would have that opportunity going forward. As I'm thinking through this, it occurs to me this is probably only going to benefit the superstars who are likely going to be cashing NFL/NBA paychecks in the future. One possible benefit, though, is that if you want to sell your image, you better have a squeaky clean reputation in this state. So, "unspecified violations of team rules" would weigh a little heavier.

From what I understand, that's kinda what prompted the move. -

2020 SF Tibet Görener - Arizona - San Jose St
Norm Peterson replied to hhcmatt's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
Make sure you don't have the columns mixed up. The first is his overall FG numbers, second is the 2-point FGs, third is the 3-pt FGs and the fourth is the FT numbers. -

2021 PG Chucky Hepburn -> Wisconsin
Norm Peterson replied to uneblinstu's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
Congratulations to Chucky. I wish him well. I'll gladly cheer him on except for the one or two (sometimes maybe three) times per year they play Nebraska. No hard feelings. None at all. I don't feel dissed the way Akoy Agau left us hanging. Happy for Chucky and good luck in all your future endeavors. -
I didn’t have big expectations for this team this year. I think a hair under .500 would be a good goal in conference play and nine wins in the nonconference schedule should be the goal.

I was ... struck ... by the way Yvan was sealing Kevin Cross down low and scoring over him. He's nowhere near a finished package, Yvan. But he has a lot of lower body strength and you don't move him; he moves you. And whoever said he's just 6'7 should probably revisit that. From what I could see, he has an inch or so on Dalano Banton. The people who were pencilling him in as a starter were probably right. Having said that, he really would have benefited from being here all summer. Thor was draining treys in warmups, by the way. And hit one or two during the scrimmage. Probably no one has benefited more from Hoiberg's coaching.

You don’t have to name names. He loves his mama’s home cookin.
-
Quick takes: Extremely quick backcourt with Burke and Mack. You can see why they’re high on Blanton. Sneaky weak side rebounder. High IQ. Length and ball handling. Yvan surprised me in a good way. Don’t ask him to shoot on the perimeter, but he’s strong and can get good position deep and score inside. Shamiel looked very slow. Perimeter shooting left much much to be desired, but it’s an early scrimmage, so ... Also, not a lot of D and a Buncha missed dunks.

You. The. Man.

Good to know.

I just know we're all counting on @Swan88 to make sure we get pics of all the recruits in attendance tonight. Not going to say I'd be let down if he doesn't manage to get pics because I know he will. Failure is not an option. Right, Swaney?
-
Anyone have any idea what's on the agenda for tonight? Like, prior to 7? Will they be finishing up a practice when the gates open so that fans can see more than just a 20 minute scrimmage? Anyone on here know?

2021 PF Kenny Pohto -> Wichita St
Norm Peterson replied to hhcmatt's topic in Husker Hoops Recruiting
Hoiberg has shown the ability to finish with recruits. Would love to see him with a Pohto finish.
