Four years ago, Pat Chambers began building a college basketball program with an unusual strategy — he recruited players Penn State had no shot of signing.

A lack of selling points necessitated the unorthodox approach. Football is king in State College, and the basketball team rarely escapes the cellar of the Big Ten standings or outdraws the wrestling team.

So Chambers focused on a 10-year plan, wide-eyed freshmen and his Philadelphia roots. His philosophy required the type of patience rarely stomached in big-time athletics.

But Wednesday, in a small, private high school tucked behind Philly's bustling Center City, his vision will became as clear as a black-penned signature on clean white paper.

Three Roman Catholic teammates — Tony Carr, Lamar Stevens and Nazeer Bostick — signed letters of intent to join PSU next year. The inked documents shift the spotlight from Chambers' spotty 56-75 record the past four seasons to the Lions' first ESPN top-10 recruiting class and a burgeoning pipeline that has the program in uncharted territory.

Penn State has now lured five recruits from Philly and four four-star prospects to Happy Valley in its past three recruiting classes.
